Beth - Cheltenham tutor
Information About Beth:
Personal Description:
This is my fifth year as a full-time tutor for English Language, English Literature and Dyslexia. I have three sons in their twenties, two of whom are dyslexic so I have a good understanding of the condition. Students can choose to come to my house for lessons or I can travel to them.
CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: all lessons are currently taking place online. Plenty of day-time and evening availability.
Teaching Experience:
I started teaching in 1986 and have taught in three comprehensive schools and one college of further education. My degree was in English Literature with linguistics and I hold a PGCE in education and a diploma in Specific Learning Difficulties.
As a tutor, I have taught children as young as 5 through to adults. I also teach students studying for a diploma in SpLD at a local HE college.
My specialisms, as well as dyslexia, are English Language (which I have taught at A Level) and English Literature also to A Level. As an A-Level English Language teacher, I have an excellent knowledge of grammar which is helpful for the new gcses.
In the past two years the syllabuses I have covered include the Cambridge igcse, Edexcel gcse, AQA gcse, Eduqas gcse, the new Cambridge Pre-U, A Level Language and Literature. I have also coached students towards the Professional Skills Test for Trainee Teachers.
Tutoring Approach:
A positive student - tutor relationship is central to my method. It fosters confidence in oneself and from that comes success.
A typical gcse lesson consists of some technical practice (spelling, punctuation, grammar), focus on set texts or preparation for language papers and a short game to finish.
Students who need more help with spelling, grammar and punctuation may spend more time working on these skills via short activities and games. I place a big emphasis on varying the content of lessons as much as possible.
This year, students said: 'thank you for being an amazing tutor'; 'you have been one of the loveliest teachers I have ever had' and 'My PI wouldn't have been half as good without you and our language analysis'.
