Personal Description:

I was born and educated in south Devon until I left for university in London, and for an art scholarship in New York City. I have a huge passion for Art in all its disciplines and currently practise in my studio. I hugely enjoy teaching and supporting children, teenagers and young people, guiding them to develop their skills and helping them on to the next stage in their education. Adults of all ages attend my classes, pursuing art for pleasure in a variety of media including drawing, pastel, watercolour and acrylic painting.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified Art and Design teacher, with fourteen years experience in a Devon grammar school. I achieved a Distinction for my PGCE Secondary Art & Design qualification at Exeter University and have extensive experience in teaching Art to 11-18 year olds, with particular achievement at GCSE and A level. My other skills include preparing students' portfolios in all disciplines of Art and Design for interview, and as a Duke of Edinburgh Award skills assessor in Art and Photography. Another role as an A level moderator for an exam board in Fine Art, Photography, Textiles, Graphic Communication and 3D Design, provides a thorough insight of grade expectations at A level. I teach one-to-one lessons in students' homes, and also enjoy teaching adults in small and large groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe all Art (including Photography, Textiles, Graphic Art and 3D Design) should begin organically from the student, and my first approach is to find out what the student enjoys, art-wise and in general. With guidance, we develop a direction for their work, focusing on these interests - while also meeting the requirements of the examination board at GCSE and A level. I demonstrate artistic techniques and suggest a wide range of artists, photographers and designers, past and present, to motivate and build enthusiasm, skills and confidence. I have a wide collection of art books and exemplar work at KS3, KS4 and KS5 which I often use as inspirational teaching resources.
