Philip - Barnes tutor
Information About Philip:
Personal Description:
I am fortunate that my interest's mean that I have to travel in order to explore primary evidence in order to formulate my own hypothesises and further my research interests. As such I have a love of France and Italy, enjoying numerous visits to Paris and the key historical Italian cities. This love of travel have spread to the students I teach, one who is currently attending Magdalen College studying French and Historical French Literature. It is my fervent believe that a student only truly engages and bonds with a subject by seeing it first hand, as a result I've run trips to the trenches, Paris, London and recently I've planned a school visit to New York and Washington DC. Along with my passion for politics I have a love and fascination with naval history; whether that was inspired by fictional characters I read about in my youth such as Hornblower or later on Jack Aurbrey, it came alight whilst being a senior manager at Portsmouth History Dockyard. Having HMS Victory and Warrior as a work environment left an impression on me that have influenced my reading and interests. It has allowed me to not only treat this as a passing interest but also share these interests with others. Whilst in Portsmouth I wrote articles and led discussion groups around naval history. One of my personal favourites was Reading in Places that allowed me to develop my interest in the Royal Navy with reading about it.
Teaching Experience:
I have taught for over 10 years and have taught a range of students from primary to post graduate students. I believe I can offer enthusiasm, motivation and innovative teaching, dedicated to improving pupil's achievements and maximising their potential. I also believe that my experience as an examiner for AQA and my contacts with the exam boards allows me to guide my students to excellence. My roles that have been outside the classroom have given me the opportunity to lecture in higher education, (Brighton University - Heritage Management, Development of Naval Firepower Portsmouth University), as well as work in the political landscape, have allowed me to use practical exams for student to visualise and access to professionals in the field who can develop their knowledge with the most current examples. At the National Museum I worked with the MOD and Foreign Office and whilst in my position with BECTA, as an Education Consultant, I worked closely with the DFE, OFSTED and QCA. These positions have allowed me to teach students effectually using real life examples of how policy is made and implemented. It has also allowed me to give access to experiences that students would not normally be able to achieve.
Tutoring Approach:
I am currently a tutor to a year Thirteen form group. As a form tutor I data to help and inform individual pupils and parents of their progress and where and how they can reach their full potential. I feel as a tutor I have instilled structure and respect so pupils have felt able to come and seek advice and guidance where necessary, particularly with the next phase of their lives. I believe that I have the subject and examination knowledge and understanding necessary to create a successful, innovative and flourishing environmen that is required of this post alongside, maintaining the school's strong progressive ethos to strive for the best.
