Kirsten - Gloucester tutor
Information About Kirsten:
Personal Description:
Hi! My name is Kirsten, I am a BSc Psychology 2:1 graduate (Bristol), currently studying for my MSc in Clinical Neuropsychiatry (Birmingham). I have a place to study Graduate Medicine at the University of Warwick next academic year.
I am looking for both secondary school level tutoring roles, adult/undergraduate Psychology instruction as well as any study skill tuition including the 11+ exam. I can also teach for the medical entrance exams UKCAT and GAMSAT.
I am a confident, professional person who is outgoing and highly passionate about education. I believe in a tailored approach, and use alternate teaching styles to assist children for whom the classic school system just isn't delivering their best!
I am a fully qualified driver and own a car, being happy to tutor after school at pupils' homes within the Cheltenham, Gloucester and Stroud areas.
Tutoring in Cheltenham, Stroud or further afield incurs a small petrol charge (£5 Cheltenham/Stroud, £7 further afield).
FOR ONLINE TUTORING - please knock £2.50 per hour off the stated price, but I will ask the admin fee for this site is paid by the tutee.
I will happily provide one-off online sessions 30mins+ to cover individual topics or help with essays/revision. These sessions will be charged at £2.50 less per hour for all subjects. I can offer essay marking as an add-on service at £10 per paper (£30 for dissertation marking)
I will also happily do whole day sessions which so far most individuals have opted to use as multi-subject revision for upcoming exams.
I hold a current DBS certificate on the government update service open for general use and would be happy to supply this to parents/prospective tutees.
Teaching Experience:
I have a large amount of tutoring experience across age/qualification levels, with exceptional outcomes for my tutees in terms of results and confidence. I have had 14 tutees, all of whom improved by 2 grades or more under my tuition; one of whom achieved 98% in their Psychology A-level following combined Psychology and study skills tuition. I specialise particularly in adaptive tuition for children and young adults with diagnosed or suspected dyslexia, ADHD or ADD with many past success stories. I am also more than happy to work with ASD, Tourette, OCD or other developmental learning difficulty sufferers.
During my time at school I was an instructor in the cadets, teaching basic first aid, shooting and RAF syllabus for 3 years to cadets aged 12-18. I subsequently returned and spent a year as an adult instructor in both the CCF and outdoor education department.
I also have work experience in nursery settings and previous volunteer experience working at a special needs preschool in Cheltenham and would be happy to tutor children with additional needs. My degree specialty is in dyslexia and I am able to provide tailored material, techniques and specialist guidance for individuals with this educational need. My MSc course involves behavioural interventions and clinical understanding of a wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions that require additional educational input.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is just to be as flexible as needed, and to tailor my teaching style to the individual.
Whilst my Psychology background means I come with the knowledge of what constitutes an effective learning/revision technique; I appreciate individual differences in style.
I also appreciate that everybody has a different experience and level of skill with technology. Whilst I would aspire to include interactive learning tools that can be extended outside of our sessions, I understand that this is not for everyone and will happily tutor in a more conventional style if this means my student can take more away from our time. Through online access I provide lots of revision and syllabus materials to all my tutees.
At the heart of my tutoring style is to accept that often a lack of understanding comes not from a lack of ability in a subject, but from the explanation that has been given being unsuited to that person. I focus on breaking concepts down to simple and memorable steps/parts and reviewing them until a full understanding is reached. I also feel it is very important not just to have a piece of knowledge, but to both understand WHY something is how it is and HOW it can be applied across subjects/concepts.
Everyone has the ability to learn... we all just do it differently!
