Paula - Chatham tutor
Information About Paula:
Personal Description:
I decided to start tutoring after my experience in trying to get tutors for my own children. As a professional working internationally I thought it would be easy to hand over this important element of their education to someone with both experience and patience. My notion was quickly turned on its head. The Tutors I found taught textbook style with the one shoe fits all approach. My children and others didn't fit into that mould. I very quickly realised that I could do a better job and took the role in house, initially teaching my own daughters before extending out to their friends.
To date I have tutored over 250 children who have gone onto their chosen schools and universities. I believe that tutoring should be about delivering skills to children that they can carry with them throughout their young lives and provide a solid platform on which to develop.
Teaching Experience:
I am an experienced English tutor offering one-to-one support in English Language and English Literature across Key Stages 2, 3 and 4, helping pupils build confidence, develop strong foundations and reach their full potential.
My experience spans a wide range of learners and qualifications, including home-schooled students, GCSE and A Level candidates, and those studying the International Baccalaureate (IB). I also work with international students, whether they are attending school in the UK or studying from their home countries, and I am comfortable adapting my approach to different curricula, time zones and cultural backgrounds.
In English Language, I help students strengthen their reading comprehension, writing accuracy, spelling, grammar and punctuation, as well as their ability to write creatively and persuasively for different audiences. In English Literature, I guide pupils through set texts, poetry and unseen extracts, teaching them to analyse language and structure, form thoughtful personal responses and write clear, well-evidenced essays.
I have achieved particularly rewarding results working with children who have ADHD, dyslexia and other learning difficulties. I understand that every child learns differently, so I tailor each lesson to the individual, using clear explanations, structured routines, and patient, encouraging support. My aim is to help pupils not only improve their grades, but also to enjoy reading and writing and to believe in their own ability.
Whatever the age, stage or learning style, I am committed to providing a supportive and engaging environment where every student can thrive.
Tutoring Approach:
I love seeing a student's enthusiasm for a subject, and I share that excitement for English myself. Few things are more rewarding than watching a pupil discover a book, poem or piece of writing that sparks their curiosity.
I am equally passionate about supporting those who find the subject challenging or who are looking for practical methods to improve their skills. I believe everyone can make progress with the right guidance, so I break down complex ideas into manageable steps, build on each student's strengths and adapt my teaching to the way they learn best.
Whether a pupil is aiming for top grades, rebuilding their confidence or simply wanting to enjoy English more, my goal is to make learning feel achievable, engaging and worthwhile.
