Personal Description:

I am a full-time permanent English teacher with over nine years' experience. I have marked the GCSE Exams for CCEA for over six years. I teach English Literature and English Language from KS3 to A Level. I have the ability to integrate humour, imagination and effective use of ICT to encourage a positive learning culture. I aim to inspire excellence in each and every pupil that I work with.

Tutoring Approach:

My aim as a tutor is to create a deep understanding and confidence in tackling exam questions. I firmly believe that it is essential to be comfortable with the basics of spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and structure before attempting more challenging aspects such as the analysis of linguistic features. My approach varies depending on the student's needs and learning style. My teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start with topics the students are comfortable with and move, gradually, towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and homework to check understanding continually.

I usually focus on exam-style or past paper questions in order to check, practice and perfect the student's understanding and technique. I also give a lot of emphasis to some of the less obvious but vital skills such as stress management and logical thinking techniques. Where appropriate, I set and mark work and give students detailed feedback so that they can improve quickly.

• 2.1 MA Joint Honours English Literature and English Language
