Melissa - Upper Holloway tutor
Information About Melissa:
Personal Description:
I am a qualified teacher currently teaching year 5. I also hold a (2.1) degree in Psychology.
Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring independently for 2 years ranging from primary school subjects to a level Psychology.
Prior to independent tutoring, I have worked as a tutor for two years at London Advanced College (LAC) tutoring Key stage 1, 2, 3 and 4 in English Language, Literature and Maths. I have also worked as a reading recovery assistant in a primary for the last academic year focusing on children who experienced difficulty with reading.
During my 1 year placement of my degree, I worked at Great Ormond Street Children`s hospital school where I worked on a one-to-one basis with children who experienced difficulties, between the ages of 5 and 16 years in various different subjects. I also worked as a student ambassador for my university where I was a mentor for children aged 11 and above to promote higher education.
Tutoring Approach:
My experience combined with my theoretical knowledge have enabled me to give tutoring of high quality with structured lesson plans to enable a student to progress successfully. I consider very important the variety of learning styles and ensure that when tutoring I teach in ways of which I feel the student will fulfil their full potential to progress and improve. I achieve this aim with effective planning and ensure that I have prior knowledge (through research if not already known) to essential information such as examining boards, national curriculum, past papers, etc.
My degree in psychology not only educated me of the connection between mind and behaviour, but also development stages a child can experience during their road to adolescence and adulthood with regards to education and social influences. By learning this, I have considered the importance of one-to-one teaching and moulding a session to cater for the student's needs and learning styles. In my experience I have seen that this not only improves a child's academic achievement but also their confidence. This is the approach I take when teaching.
