Alan - Hereford tutor
Information About Alan:
Personal Description:
August 2012: All of my students were "successful" in their A/L BIOLOGY exams and those who did resat modules typically improved by two or three grades, e.g. from U to C. The parents of my GCSE students were very pleased with their results (i.e. in Core and Additional Science and GCSE Human Health and Physiology).
I'm available to provide assistance for you to prepare for AS or A2 Biology/Human Biology in 2012/2013, or undergraduate courses where a knowledge of A-level Biology/Human Biology is needed.
One positive feedback about my tuition emailed to me during 2012 was, "Our son is really enjoying your tuition: his confidence in Biology has noticeably increased".
I'm now retired from daily classroom teaching. I'm keen to learn new information in Biology and other aspects of science, and share my knowledge with my students. Many students prefer individual tuition, but I enjoy working with small groups, too.
Teaching Experience:
(Mostly as a Head of Department)
1966-1983: Taught in two grammar schools (students aged 11-18, A/L Botany and Biology; O/L Biology)
1984-1988: Taught in two comprehensive schools (students aged 11-18; A/L and O/L Biology, O/L and CSE Science)
1988-2008: Lectured in an FE college (students aged 15-80: A/L Biology, Human Biology, Environmental Science, GCSE Human Biology).
2008-2012: Private tuition: Edexcel (GCSE) Science 360, Core Science and Additional Science; AQA Human Health and Physiology; WJEC, OCR and Edexcel A/L Biology and Human Biology; OU Science foundation course
Tutoring Approach:
My aim is to provide good, accurate science tuition in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere.
I brief myself thoroughly on the requirements of the Specification that's to be covered, including careful study of past papers and mark schemes.
I am very happy to be led by my students (or parents) in what should be covered in sessions, e.g. emergency revision for a test or exam, or generic guidance for coursework.
Otherwise, I cover the requirements of the Specification in a suitable order. I may use appropriate textbooks, Internet sources, e.g. animations, such as breathing movements or the replication of DNA. We may use the student's notes, or materials that I have written. I like to encourage a good discussion of topics through questions and answers. I use practical examples where possible (or Internet substitutes). I keep in mind the ultimate target, i.e. the exams to be taken, so we work on past papers whenever possible. I ENCOURAGE MY STUDENTS TO HAND IN OR E-MAIL WORK TO ME FOR ASSESSMENT.
