I have been tutoring privately for 20 years and have seen my students grow in confidence, understanding and knowledge of their chosen topics. I approach tutoring different ways depending on who the student is. I ask them questions about themselves, hobbies, favourite subjects etc; and then using that to better understand how they learn, I talk to them about their private learning and revision and the method of approach to that and to exams. And then I teach them using the method appropriate to their style of learning. I also set plenty of work and get them to do past papers which I send to them in the first week. I then take these away and mark them in my own time and return with a deeper view of where they are going wrong after they have been taught. I do 2hr concentrated sessions either weekly or fornightly and have seen great results not only in grades but also in enthusiasm for learning. I am also on hand to discuss career and university options too, which helps ease the daunting choices the students have to make.

I began my combat training at thirteen at a local boxing club in Llanelli, learning the vital skills and discipline that have kept me working in the fitness and self-defence field for over ten years.

At the age of fifteen I joined the Cobra-Kai Freestyle Kickboxing Federation, and trained religiously under the regime of instructor Lee Martin (4th degree black belt). In 1997 I went on to win the European martial arts title (WUMA Federation), held at Cheltenham. On my return, and after numerous local newspaper photos and write-ups, I received the greatest honour any keen young martial artist dreams of: becoming a fully-fledged black belt.

Teaching Experience:
At the young age of 18, I opened my very own kickboxing club at Llanelli Leisure Centre, for all levels and ages. After showcasing my skills, not only as a martial artist but also a teacher, I received my 2nd degree black belt. Starting with just one weekly ninety-minute class, I now run four classes per week. Over the years I have helped created more than ten black belt students, two welsh champions and one British champion.

In 1997, I ran my first all women's self-defence class, training women of all ages and physical abilities. I continued my classes, eventually including mixed gender and young persons training.

After undergoing a series of courses from Securicare, Frontline, Venue security and BIIAB City and Guilds, I have become a Level 7 Conflict Management Trainer. I have worked alongside various organisations such as the NHS, covering the majority of hospitals and clinics throughout Carmarthenshire.

As well as training, I have since achieved my 4th degree black belt, opened my own one-to-one gym, and become an advanced level 3 personal trainer through Fitness Wales (REPs certified), teaching private lessons of fitness, weight training, martial arts, self-defence, Pilates, and much more.

Teaching has been a big part of my life from a very young age. It has given me great pleasure and accomplishment. At times I have found it difficult, but at the same time rewarding. In October 2014 I graduated from Imperial College London, where I spent 4 years studying for my Masters Degree in MSci Mathematics. I'm widely travelled and have spent many years living abroad. This has contributed to a high degree of fluency in Spanish and French. I acquire languages easily, being open to the cultures in which I find myself.

I have taught exclusively in continental countries. One year in Finland, six years in Spain and two in Germany. In all cases the teaching took place in private schools or in company offices. Much of the teaching was 1 to 1, the rest being in small groups.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that language acquisition takes place when the learner is relaxed and so my approach may be considered informal. The choice of materials is a joint decision. Good classes can take place with or without them.

My own love for learning is evidenced by my hobbies which extend from sailing through to singing, piano, camping and walking and even the piano accordion. Hi my name is April, I'm 21 and I love to teach! Teaching for me is so satisfying, that moment when a student just gets it - when it finally clicks. AMAZING! I find it so rewarding, inspiring people to want to learn. I studied Maths, Further Maths, Additional Maths and Statistics at GCSE level and Maths at A level and I know the importance, having had such an amazing teacher myself, of being taught by someone who is passionate about Maths and passionate about teaching.

I have been tutoring for five years now. I started when I was 16, volunteering for my Duke Of Edinburgh Award at an after-school tutoring centre. Then I went on to having private students of my own at both A level and GCSE level in person and online. I have recently returned from travelling where I worked for 3 months in an alternative learning school in the Dominican Republic and taught Maths and English to various people on my journey.

Tutoring Approach:
I teach up to GCSE level including Further Maths and Additional Maths. In my lessons we figure out together what areas need working on and start from there. It really depends on the student whether we're revisiting subjects they've already covered in class to consolidate prior learning or whether we're learning ahead of lessons so that they're going into school with more confidence, one step ahead of curriculum. Regardless, I always give students questions between sessions of every topic we have covered so far so that they're constantly practicing and reinforcing knowledge even if they are topics we covered a long time ago.

I have a PhD in chemistry and have published a book on Study Smarter: a lecture's inside guide to boost your grades.

With over 15 years as an academic, I have published extensively in peer-reviewed academic publications. My passion and outstanding commitment to teaching were recognised by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2016 with a Higher Education Teaching Award. In 2017, I was awarded a prestigious National Teaching Fellowship in the UK.

Most students are wasting time with the study habits they use. This may seem like a crazy thing to say, isn't working hard the foundation to good results?
Research shows that at least 6 out of every 10 students are using suboptimal study strategies.
I've met this a lot in my own work. I have created a Study Smarter Audit to help identify where study habits can be improved. This can be over 2 sessions or longer depending on what you want to achieve. I work online and create a personalised plan to target effective study strategies and evaluate the changes.
