I am an academic and scholar who holds both a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and a MLitt (Master of Literature) from The University of Glasgow, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) honours degree from The University of Paisley. My first academic book 'Robert Taylor: Male Beauty, Masculinity and Stardom in Hollywood' (University Press of Mississippi, 2019) was shortlisted for the Best Monograph of the Year at BAFTSS Awards 2020 and my second academic book, 'Tyrone Power; Genre, Gender and Image in Classical Hollywood Cinema' (Edinburgh University Press, 2021) was released in February 2021. Tutoring Approach:
I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. I will break down subjects into easily manageable blocks and make sure that my student understands the unit before moving on. I also like to vary my tutorials by having some in the form of lectures, some in the form of question and answers, some where I will give students feedback on homework they have done and suggestions to improve what they have done, etc.

I also find that on-line tuition is the best method and students can ask questions that they may not ask if they were face-to-face with someone, it is a much more relaxed approach but students get a lot out of it (and can save all the notes from lessons for use later on).

I studied English Literature at Edinburgh University, graduating with a First Class Masters in 1999, before going on to train as an actor at the prestigious London Academy of Dramatic Art (LAMDA) in 2001. Since graduating, I have worked extensively as an actor in theatre, television and radio and since 2007 I have worked very closely with acclaimed theatre company The Factory as an associate producer and director as well as an actor. I have a wide-ranging interest in the arts (from contemporary music through to cinema and the visual arts) as well as an active interest in politics and current affairs. I was not a great student as a child. Rigid and rote teaching sucked all the appreciation I might have had from learning. That is, until I returned to education in my late 20s and, over the course of two bachelor's and master's degrees, discovered just how rewarding it can be. Partly because of this reason (and partly because I simply love sharing knowledge!), I began a new career in teaching and for the past 9 years - with over 600 hours of teaching logged - I have made a point of injecting colour into a learning world that, for many students, has become drab and monochrome.

Outside of teaching, I love my arts and crafts - from drawing and painting to cross-stitching and model-building. I love being creative! And that feeds into my teaching. From there, I tailor sessions to meet their individual needs. Each session incorporates a variety of activities designed to reinforce existing knowledge while introducing new concepts. Building a strong rapport with students is a priority, helping them feel comfortable and confident, which in turn supports their learning and progress.

I can also help address any learning gaps that may have arisen due to disruptions during the pandemic or any other missed learning reasons.

I'm 28 years old and have a passion for teaching. I have been working in the pharmaceutical industry for 2 years in process control and regulatory affairs. In these roles, I have written scientific summaries for public dissemination, including industry guidance and legal representations submitted to court. Additionally, I have responded directly to inquiries from members of the public, effectively communicating complex ideas in clear, accessible language. I have strong IT skills and the ability to plan and prioritise tasks.

I have a comprehensive academic background in biological sciences, holding both a BSc and an MSc in the subject area. I have always studied in the UK and I have two siblings, one younger and one older, who have done the same. This has allowed me to observe the evolution of the national curriculum over the years and stay well-acquainted with it. I also believe my solid subject knowledge makes me capable of working to any changes. I am passionate about education and fostering a love for learning in students.

Outside of science, I have rather varied interests and hobbies. I enjoy keeping fit and go rock climbing regularly with friends. I am also an experienced traveller and have visited over a dozen countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. My enjoyment of these and so many other different activities enables me to find commonalities with an array of individuals, which fosters connectivity, a skill I think serves me well as a teacher/tutor.

I worked as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher with children aged 7-15 for 1 year in South Korea. I also have previous experience as a Young Leader with Girlguides aged 10-14 for ~3 years and as a Playworker at my local primary school for 1 year.

I have seen first-hand the difference I can make working as a teacher and experienced the pure fulfilment that comes from watching my students grow and develop. In the year I spent working full-time as an English teacher for elementary-middle school children in South Korea, I was responsible for developing syllabi, designing and delivering lessons, creating new learning materials, grading coursework, and ensuring the welfare of pupils. This role developed my ability to communicate and connect with children and young adults, taking the time to understand each one in order to adapt to their specific needs and effectively motivate them through challenging tasks.

I strive to create a supportive and approachable learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help. My confident yet friendly and adaptable nature allows me to build strong relationships with students, earning their respect while ensuring they never feel intimidated.

I am a passionate English teacher with experience working with Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students both in mainstream school settings, as well as online as part of alternative provision for both groups and 1:1. I have experience working with students with high anxiety and social/emotional/mental health challenges that present a barrier to accessing lessons in school, or benefit from further tuition. I have a lot of experience working with students with SEND, particularly students with ADHD, ASD and/or dyslexia. As well as supporting academic progress, I aim to ensure support with flourishing holistically too.

I currently live in Northern Ireland, but my career has been based in England (mainstream city schools in and around Norwich) and with students across England and Wales via an alternative provision supporting students via a virtual school. I have predominantly taught AQA English Language and AQA English Literature, but have experience with Eduqas and OCR too. I have a strong understanding of exam requirements and can adapt to teach other boards, as required by the student. I love to foster creativity through reading and writing, where possible tying this to student interests. I am friendly and approachable, always keen to hear more about what makes students happy. I am passionate about the great outdoors and love being around both sea and mountains, but having the option to curl up with some crafts or games when Irish weather makes for an indoor day.

Teaching Experience:
2 years working with Tute Education (Online Learning Provider/Alternative Provision): Working with students across England and Wales on both a 1:1 and group basis, teaching both English Language and Literature at KS3 and KS4 level. Lessons are conducted via online lessons within Tute's platform. I have worked on multiple projects to develop the curriculum and supported in developing best practice for practicing effective assessment for learning, metacognition and implementing Bloom's Taxonomy.

1 year working with Shaw Trust and HMPPS: Teaching adults on probation with life skills, communication, literacy and numeracy, and work skills.

2 years working with City Academy Norwich: Working as a Teacher of English, as well as a Second in Department in my second year, with responsibility for Key Stage 3 curriculum and assessment design, and literacy programmes across lower Key Stage 3. In this role I also took on pastoral responsibilities as a form tutor.

Teaching training placements in both a large inner-city school with high levels of SEND, EAL and socio-economic disadvantage, as well as a small, rural Ofsted Good school.

1 year as an English-specific Learning Support Assistant and Instructor within an inner-city school. This role involved supporting individual students and groups to engage with lessons and be supported with breaking down tasks, as well as stretching more-able students. Interventions were also provided as additional support for Year 11 groups in the lead up to exams.

Tutoring Approach:
My goal with tutoring to not just instruct students, but to empower them to be proactive learners. I am passionate about metacognition and aiding students in being aware of their thinking, maintaining curiosity and instilling faith in their beliefs and abilities. Learning should be enjoyable, but that does not mean we should not stretch ourselves. I aim for a balance of enjoyment and fun, with development of core skills. This is not just teaching to an exam, but teaching to be a life-long learner.
