I obtained BSc and PhD degrees from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and subsequently taught at degree level in the Physics Department of Trinity College Dublin. I have also taught at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Computer Science Department of the University of Durham.

My previous career in industry has given me experience in digital hardware, software systems maintenance, and systems management, to complement my experience in teaching.

Third - PRACTICE:

My observation is that if the student goal is to achieve an A grade it requires at least two hours of tutoring per week throughout the academic year, of course, some students ask for more. Since 2010, I have been tutoring in the academic subjects Maths and the individual Sciences; Biology, Chemistry & Physics.

I have taught at both primary- and secondary-school levels, with my students ranging between the ages of 6 and 16.

After completing my D.Phil from the University of Oxford, I worked for 7 years as a Senior Biologist for a small drug discovery company where I was responsible for screening new drug targets in tissue models for human disease. Over the years I've had so many comments from students/colleagues about my ability to break subjects down to ease understanding, and coupled with my passion for science and sharing that with others I decided to change career and become a full-time science tutor. I've never looked back!

Tutoring Approach:
All students are different, so I strive to find what interests the student and work from there. An engaged student is a keen student.

It is important that the principles are understand because all else flows from this. I use examples from the students' course work and life situations to focus on what is important to the student, to put things in a language that they can understand. This can be through explanations, sketches, diagrams etc. When this happens and the light goes on, there is great satisfaction that the student is taking an interest in the subject.

Personal Description:
I'm a highly experienced Head of Physics & Science, with over 40 years of dedicated teaching at leading secondary schools. My expertise spans GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level, and IB Physics (SL & HL). I've also contributed to the educational landscape by examining and writing exams for these qualifications and by training other physics teachers globally. This diverse experience allows me to understand the curriculum inside out and provide exceptional support to students.

I've observed a growing trend of students taking Physics without strong mathematical foundations, which can significantly hinder their progress. To address this, I offer specialised 'Maths for Physics' tuition. My experience shows that a solid grasp of the required maths can improve a student's final grade by up to two levels, helping them unlock their full potential in Physics.

Beyond academic achievements, I believe effective teaching nurtures well-rounded individuals. I am deeply passionate about being a positive role model, guiding students to not only excel academically but also to grow into responsible, caring, and confident young people. Furthermore, I have a global perspective, having worked with teachers and students worldwide as an approved Physics workshop leader, providing online teaching support. This diverse experience ensures I can adapt my methods to suit individual learning styles and needs.

I have 22 years teaching experience. I have BA and a BA (Hons) from the Open University. I have a MSc from Birkbeck College. have a PGCE from Anglia Polytechnic and I have membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Teaching Experience:
I have 22 years teaching experience. I have taught Chemistry to GCSE, BTEC and GNVQ and A Level Chemistry to Year 12. I have also taught Biology to GCSE Level and Physics to KS3 Level. I have Primary experience in both KS1 and KS2.
I have a number of year tutoring experience for Chemistry and all my tutees have passed their GCSE.

I gained membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry and have undertaken volunteer work for them. I also volunteer in the Science Museum in South Kensington for the last 8 years and The University of Cambridge for the Cambridge Festival of Ideas and the University of Cambridge for the Cambridge Science Festival.

Tutoring Approach:
I have a number of year tutoring experience for Chemistry and all my tutees have passed their GCSE.

Lesson will consist of prepared notes which will be discussed during the tutoring sessions. There will be supported by use of worksheets and then exam style questions. Each lesson will be based on specific areas of the syllabus that is intended to support the work that is being undertaken in the classroom. This will follow the part of the syllabus being taught in the classroom, to support and re-inforce student learning.

I use videos to support learning and these will be showed used a laptop. I will use a projector (if it is possible). If the student wishes to only look at specific areas if the syllabus, then I will undertake to produce material to support this request.
