As a teenager I was lucky enough to receive tuition myself and it made a huge difference, so I really know how much of an advantage it gives.

Tutoring is my full-time job and has been for many years.

I am extremely quick at identifying student problem areas and devising the most efficient solutions, sometimes with budget or time constraints. Where necessary I focus on exam technique as I find many capable and knowledgeable students gain confidence (and marks!) once these skills are taught.

I have spent many years accumulating a wide range of academic qualifications, and my work has often primarily consisted of passing on my knowledge to others in a form they can understand. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people to understand something they thought was beyond them. By virtue of having studied several subjects at a high level, I empathise with the feeling of finding something difficult, and have the patience and technique to get past this. I am not a single-subject specialist who might find it difficult to understand why others struggle in their area of expertise.
For students who are preparing for exams, my knowledge of examination technique, and an empathy with the marker, should be invaluable. I always keep in mind the importance of the student's goals, but never take myself too seriously.

My whole career has been geared towards some form of teaching. I have trained groups of adults and children, as well as individuals, in elements of mathematics, psychology, actuarial science, pensions, and even tennis! I have tutored both of my children through IGCSEs, GCSEs, and A-levels (one was home-schooled, the other attended a local comprehensive and 6th Form College). Both obtained numerous As and A*s, and I was particularly pleased to help my daughter to achieve 3 A*s in her A2 exams.

Hello! My name is Gemma and I am a 32 year old doctor, chartered accountant, strategy consultant and successful start up founder. I graduated in medicine from Nottingham University in 2016, switched to finance, became a qualified chartered accountant, and now work for one of the 'Big4' in health advisory and strategic consulting. I am a highly experienced, enthusiastic and very versatile optical engineering senior lecturer/researcher, who gained a PhD from the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, City University, London, UK in "Fibre optical temperature and strain sensors using fluorescent techniques" for measurement applications using the fluorescence generated from rare earth-doped optical fibres (e.g. Er3+, Yb3+, Tm3+ etc.). I also possess very good experience and knowledge of industry, with excellent complimentary skills gained from higher education - in particular industrial measurement, forensic analysis, quality control and statistical analysis. A BSc first degree in forensic science is combined with a further specialist MSc in engineering metrology and topped with a PhD in photonics - making for good, broad-based, multi-disciplined measurement science and analytical capabilities right across the scientific spectrum. Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

I am 36 yrs old, happily married to my lovely wife Ren, and was born and raised in the United Kingdom.

I have a BEng (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oxford Brookes University and have A-levels in Mathematics, Physics and Physical Education. My degree had numerous modules in advanced mathematics and physics, which I excelled at and deeply enjoyed. I informally tutored several of my friends and peers during university in Mathematics.

Following my graduation I secured a junior project engineering position at a company in the Oil and Gas Industry in 2007. I progressed into a project management role within 3 years of starting my career and I have subsequently been a Project Manager and Project management consultant for large engineering and construction companies in the Oil, Gas and Energy industries, including Schlumberger and Koch Industries. I have bachelors and masters degrees in Chemistry from Birmingham University. I am a Chartered Scientist (CSci), a Chartered Chemist (CChem), a Fellow or the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC) and a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) under the UK planning National Quality Mark Scheme (NQMS).

I have an enhanced DBS certificate for inspection as required.

Teaching Experience:
I help younger people as a private tutor towards GCSE and A-levels in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics (Pure and Mechanics) - either in person or on;ine.

I help students with attaining the grades they need to continue their studies into the 6th form or for entry into their chosen University to study subjects such as mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, chemistry, biomedical sciences, etc. Testimonials are available on request.

Tutoring Approach:
I provide strategies to help students manage the stresses of exams. This includes time management in exams and methods to maximise marks in exams in such a way to give the student confidence during any given paper.

Primarily, I undertake one-to-one tuition either in person or online. I enjoy working to improve their understanding and learning - giving them confidence to tackle the various aspects of the subject matter with confidence and efficiency.

I focus on their weaker areas of any given subject whilst reinforcing the aspects where they are already comfortable.

Hi I'm Elise! A second year environmental science student at Lancaster University. I have a wide range of science knowledge and am excited to begin sharing and supporting GCSE aged pupils grow in their knowledge and interest of the sciences as well! Outside of tutoring, I spend lots of my time playing the flute, reading, and hiking! I'm looking forward to beginning this tutoring journey in a fun, creative and beneficial way .

Teaching Experience:
I have experience tutoring one to one close friends and family but I believe I am suited to further tutoring since I already have quite a lot of experience in supporting and facilitating young people in scouting since I am an experienced scout leader in the Winchester district. I also would say I have a recent and relevant understanding of the GCSE syllabus and examinations, especially in the sciences since I am currently taking a Bsc Environmental Science degree and my passion for science has only grown since I took my GCSE's.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring will be adapted specially to each student, depending on how they prefer to be taught but also recognizing weaknesses in the syllabus and working on those until overall confidence is build. Personal Description:
I followed my passion for understanding the world around me into science to become a cosmologist. Talking about scientific concepts and their connections, and passing on the torch, is just the best.

Through my master's degree at Perimeter Institute I have acquired a strong background in theoretical and mathematical physics. In my PhD at UCL I focused on statistical methods for astronomical data analysis of big cosmology surveys. I worked as a post-doctoral research assistant for 2.5 years on projects across weak gravitational lensing and supernova cosmology, with a stronger focus on machine learning methods. I also worked as a data scientist for the private sector for a few months.
