I have a dual background in Electrical Engineering and Psychology and retired in 2007 after 20 years as a University lecturer. At different stages in my career I have taught telecommunications engineering, computer programming, software engineering, artificial intelligence and psychology. I have been tutoring students since March 2008 and am able to offer maths, physics and ICT from primary up to 'A' level, and general science (biology, chemistry, and physics) up to GCSE level. At postgraduate level I can advise on research methods and statistics.

I am a chartered psychologist and can carry out educational and psychological assessments of both children and adults who are experiencing learning or language difficulties (however, I do not undertake remedial teaching).

I consider it important to assess the student's needs, strengths, and weaknesses carefully at the outset in order to develop a set of goals based on this assessment. If the pupil is poorly motivated and/or has acquired unhelpful learning habits then we may need to vary the approach in order to re-engage their interest and/or find a level at which they can perform successfully, and then build on this accomplishment.

I consider it crucial to establish a good working relationship with my pupils so they feel confident enough to express what it is they are struggling to understand. I believe a sense of humour is a very underated and important tool for achieving this as well as enabling pupils to enjoy the subject being taught.

I actively engage my students with the material being covered so that they feel passionately and enthusiastically involved with the process of knowledge creation.
I believe that every student has access to a unique perspective and skill set that they can employ when attempting to solve new problems, in unfamiliar situations and they are strongly encouraged to show resilience and perseverance especially when creativity, critical thinking and reflection are required. Tutoring Approach:
I put an emphasis on a deep understanding of each concept, theory, method, and observation, as well as acquiring and mastering technical skills.I am thorough in teaching, and besides explaining everything clearly I also provide and walk with the student through the necessary material - usually in the form of slides, interactive questions and quizzes, simulations, notes, problems and past papers / exam practice papers - for a solid understanding through assimilation of the ideas as well as practice. Problem-solving methods are discussed and explained, not only as to how a problem is solved, but also why it's solved that way: this helps the student understand the maths and science behind the problem better, as well as develop their critical and analytical abilities that will help them tackle any other problem in maths and science as well as in life in general.

I encourage questioning, not hesitating to raise unclear points, individuality in thinking and working, having an inquisitive and creative mind, and being good friends and generosity with working time. My particular planning and delivery of the tutorials depend on the individual student's current motivation, needs, and knowledge, as well as the particular content of the topic that is taught. I also often discuss with the student ways to learn as well as study. True learning and understanding has a multifaceted nature.
