Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

I usually start with the current topics that student is studying in the school and explain to the student that topic and related background knowledge. As I teach one to one, my pace is faster than school and we usually finish the topic in one or sometimes two classes. And then we do previous topics and I explain doubts on those topics. My approach to tutoring is highly personalised and focused on helping you achieve your desired marks. I believe that everyone has the potential to succeed, and I work closely with my students to identify their unique strengths and weaknesses, so that we can develop a customised learning plan that works for them. I'm patient, understanding, and committed to helping you succeed, adapting to your learning style and background.

My lessons are very much dependent on my initial assessment of the students, but usually involve discussions and activities to identify areas that need developing, explicitly teaching the material that students need help with, checking their understanding, then providing lots of opportunities to practise the content, leading to exam practice by emphasising on examination techniques.

I truly believe that everyone is capable of succeeding in their GCSEs and A level with hard work and the right guidance. I am confident that my experience and genuine passion in science will help my students grow their confidence and achieve great results. I have always been incredibly passionate about learning as much as possible and I want to instil this in others.
I have high scores on my GCSEs and AS Mathematics and I am currently studying Mathematics at University.
I am a very friendly, outgoing person who enjoys teaching thoroughly.

Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching since my sister was learning to talk but I first started as a private tutor at age 14. I was lucky enough to teach a class of 30 girls just after I did my GCSEs at age 17, and from there I went on to start my own business.

I worked for myself as a private maths tutor for 3 years before working at London School or Science and Technology and I am now back to private tutoring.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching style changes depending on every student I face. I would identify as having the facilitator style which is someone who encourages self-learning by asking the student questions rather than telling them the answer.

I also specialise in last minute GCSE revision where I am able to make the subject matter seem much simpler than how it is explained in many schools.

I have done a huge amount of work with ADHD and dyslexic students so I have had to deal with about every behavioural issue there is with the utmost patience and I experience a lot of joy in learning how the students get to the answer.

I have created many lesson plans myself for ages 4-16, which include animated PowerPoints, mainly in maths but I am happy to create them for any subject.

I always begin with a game or a riddle just to get thinking cap on and then we will tackle a subject with an explanation and worked examples.

A chemistry graduate with experience as a Teacher, Examiner and Head of Department. Teaching online Science kS3, Combined or separate sciences GCSE, Chemistry GCSE, Chemistry A level. I love teaching as much as I love the subject, so I feel privileged to help students reach their full potential.
I also now offer group lessons where lessons are charged at £20 with a maximum of 4 students
