Teaching Experience:

Tutoring Approach:
I find an informal style works best, particularly with secondary school students. The 1-to-1 (or small classroom) nature of tutoring lends itself well to this style, and over the years I have found that creating an environment in which the student is at ease and not afraid to make mistakes is essential to the learning process.

Having discussed the content of the lesson with the student / parent(s) prior to the lesson, a typical lesson would usually start by clarifying what the student expects out of the lesson and what knowledge I hope to impart upon the student. Using A-level Maths as an example, let's assume for the moment that the student is completely stuck at differentiating using the quotient rule (a common complaint I've received from students). I typically set the student a warm-up problem and ask them to do it whilst I watch. I watch and make mental and written notes of the key steps where their understanding is lacking or where their procedure for doing the question could be improved. I then discuss this with the student, and often, I take the time to derive the rules from first principles, with the aim of forming links in the student's brain so they don't "think" about answering the question next time. As an example, the quotient rule and be derived from the product rule, and once I show them this (not often done at school), the logic behind it is no longer opaque, and the student is often able to perform better on subsequent problems.

We then typically work through a subset of increasingly more challenging problems, and I resist the urge to tell the student the answer, instead asking targeted questions to guide them in the right direction. I almost always set homework problems, including at least one stretching problem, which are tailored to the needs of the specific student I am teaching, and we begin the next lesson by clarifying anything from the problems. Most lessons, I naturally make links between the content and my own career or another example from the world of work. I find this gives the students context and enthuses them.

Importantly, I don't recommend further tuition when it is not necessary. As an example, you may decide to start with hourly lessons twice per week. As your child's understanding and confidence grows, we may decide together that we feel comfortable dropping down to once a week. This is an excellent outcome that we can take pride in. I view my job as not only to impart knowledge and turn that A into an A*, but also to give the student the tools they need to direct their own learning.

I provide all students with specialised notes, revision questions, and exam questions tailored to their exam board, free of charge. In addition, assessments are provided every 4-6 weeks to track progress and identify areas for improvement.

But my commitment to my students goes beyond the "hour slot." I am available to answer questions and provide support via phone, email, and messaging. And I never clock-watch during lessons. I am fortunate to have also acquired a team and network of private tutors and professionals from many diverse fields and careers, all of which are happy to offer tuition and mentoring if necessary.
As the pandemic has changed the way we approach education, I have adapted my teaching methods to ensure continuity of learning for my students. Since COVID-19, I have accrued over 300 hours of online teaching and mentoring experience via Zoom and Microsoft Teams, providing a safe and convenient way for students to learn from the comfort of their own homes.

Personal Description:
I am a scientist and engineer who has always been curious about how and why things work - from small scale to astronomical - and I really enjoy being able to draw upon that experience to help students to understand maths and science concepts in ways that they can apply in their own studies and help with exam questions. I have been using maths and science throughout my career and I hope to help and inspire students by drawing upon both my academic knowledge of maths and physics and my wider work experience to help them understand the relevance of the topics they are studying by applying topics to some real-world applications.

I qualified with a bachelor's and master's degree in physics from Oxford University and an engineering doctorate (which was largely mathematics-based) from the University of Birmingham.

For most of school, university and career to date, my interest in how things work has guided my life. I have been applying maths, science, engineering and technology to real world applications, problems and challenges through conducting research and development and managing and coaching R&D teams, becoming a Chartered Physicist in the process. I also gained a Master of Business Administration from London Business School, on which I enrolled to help me understand - and now share with students - how industry operates and how science and technology are used commercially.

Teaching Experience:
I particularly enjoy finding ways to explain methods and concepts that people may be struggling with, and have experience of doing this with students and with colleagues at work. I tutored up to A level during my early years as a scientist, only stopping as the demands of family life increased. With more personal time available, I returned to tutoring to try to share some of my knowledge and experience with students and I quickly gained really positive feedback from foundation level, through GCSEs to A levels.

I have reviewed many job applications, from graduate entry to senior scientists and engineers so may be able to help with students' potential applications.

Tutoring Approach:
With new students, I start by identifying the goals for the sessions, focussing initially on topics of concern to students and parents, to determine whether there are any immediate challenges and to help build their confidence. We will then outline a plan for the tutoring sessions, tailored to individual needs. In most cases, this will align with the topics being taught at the time on their course to reinforce their grasp and understanding of those topics.

I offer support with maths and physics to GCSE and A level, including further maths A level.

I also hope to be able to help students grasp concepts through providing real-life examples of the relevance of maths & science in industry and government as well as to their careers.

I live in Woking & work in a college in Weybridge. I've enjoyed teaching & tutoring maths & physics all my working life & even during my years working in engineering. By far the most important thing for me is for a student to feel relaxed in a lesson & know they are not being judged about topics & theory they are not confident with. This is as important for my students aiming for A* at A level as it is for a student who just wants a bit of confidence & repeatable methods to achieve a grade 4 or 5 at GCSE. I have always had an interest in maths & Engineering & feel very fortunate that this is my profession.

I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bristol & worked in industry within the hydraulics & gas sampling sector. I am a qualified teacher, specializing in gcse/igcse maths & physics and A level maths at schools in Surrey. I have taught maths & physics for 15 years & for the past 6 years I have enjoyed teaching maths & Engineering at a college in Weybridge. Throughout this time & my time in industry I've had extensive experience teaching learners one to one, tailoring my teaching very much to learners individual needs.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching starts with gaining an understanding of how the student feels about the subject, how they learn best, wheather its by following examples, going through specific theory or starting from the building blocks eg fractions & algebra. Many difficulties go back to primary school where the few principles were thoroughly explained & embed, sowing seeds of difficulty when moving on to more advanced arithmetic & algebra in secondary school. My teaching is very relaxed and emphasizes a consistent repeatable approach to solving problems, trying to see the connection between what you are given & what is being asked a crucial skill for all learners. This is by far the best way to allow students to build their confidence both to get through the grade 4 barrier and to gain fluency in those last grade 8 & 9 questions in the High level papers.
I also extend this approach to A level learners to ensure everyone can reach their full potential. It is no secret that early and very extensive exam practice is a huge part of exam success. My fluency in the specifications allows me to help learners focus on sometimes small subtopics & wording that can make all the difference to achieve a high grade.

I feel having genuine empathy with the learner, their hopes & fears and where they wish to be with their maths or Physics is the most important must of teaching. All other aspects of achieving follow from this.

Holding a UK ENIC-evaluated Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (RQF Level 6) and top-tier examination scores in Maths (198/200), Chemistry (193/200), and Physics (187/200), I am passionate about making STEM subjects accessible, engaging, and rewarding for every learner.

I have extensive experience providing 1-to-1 and small-group tuition in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry for secondary students.
