After completing my D.Phil from the University of Oxford, I worked for 7 years as a Senior Biologist for a small drug discovery company where I was responsible for screening new drug targets in tissue models for human disease. Over the years I've had so many comments from students/colleagues about my ability to break subjects down to ease understanding, and coupled with my passion for science and sharing that with others I decided to change career and become a full-time science tutor. I've never looked back!

Honest school teachers will tell you that it is the noisy and disruptive pupils that get their attention, whereas the quite shy hardworking pupils tend to get neglected. Busy school teachers just do not have the time or energy to devote to helping their quieter or weaker pupils and it is these pupils that especially benefit from extra personal tuition. On the other hand a brighter pupil may be so far ahead of his or her peers that the teacher is just not able to give them the attention they need. It is never too early to start boosting a child's education. For primary school children it is important that they get a good start to their education and do not lag behind. I have been a teacher for many years having received my PGCE in 1992. Since that time I have worked in a variety of schools in the state and private sectors both in London and Oxfordshire. I believe that each student is different and needs a very specific approach. I will first try to ensure that the concept and the base of the subject is strong before we go on to a number of past paper questions and exercises. I believe that the best way to learn is to see how any problem can be tackled, go through the thought process and then apply what you know to the specific problem and solve it.

I will first see what the student finds most difficult and what their weaknesses are and then strive to overcome them. Each student will have their own learning methods, some may learn by understanding the whole concept then going into the exam questions, some want to go through exam questions while they are learning the concept to see how the theory can be applied to the problems. Some may learn visually with experiments or examples whereas others will learn through trial and improvement of their own. I will spend the first session finding out how they like to learn and design a program just right for that individual student.
Hopefully once we start tutoring, the students will feel much more confident with the subject and the key to success for any exam is self confidence. I will always be there as a guide, a mentor, a friend to help them through what they find difficult.

I work to ensure that there is understanding of the topic alongside just knowing the facts. I am up to date on current paedagogical research which I use to ensure that I am able to give the best to my students.

Personal Description:
I am a qualified secondary science teacher (specialising in physics), holding a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). I gained these qualifications after having completed a Graduate Training Programme (GTP). I completed a BSc Physics with Astronomy degree at the University of Nottingham. I have qualifications in all sciences and maths at GCSE and A-Level.

Teaching Experience:
I have taught science (biology, chemistry and physics) since 2011, to all year groups from 7-13, following these exam boards and
specifications: at GCSE, AQA Science, Edexcel IGCSE Science, OCR 21st Century Science, OCR Gateway Science and WJEC Science (all including higher tier and separate biology, chemistry and physics content); at A-Level, AQA Physics, Edexcel Physics, OCR Physics A, OCR Physics B and WJEC Physics. I have also taught the physics International Baccalaureate diploma and BTEC Level 2 and Level 3 Applied Science. I have assessed examinations for the AQA, OCR and Edexcel exam boards. I have supported students preparing for physics entry examinations for universities.

Tutoring Approach:
In 2016, I set up my own tuition company and currently operate this full-time. Tuition has an advantage over teaching in that it enables me to better help students on an individual basis. This level of help is often difficult to achieve in a classroom environment, which can be very frustrating for both the teacher and student. Tuition also allows me control over my working hours, which in turn gives greater flexibility in planning quality lessons for students.
