I have been a private tutor for many years now (since 2006) and have a record of 93% of my tutees so far having obtained grade A or above in the respective subjects with none of my tutees so far ever obtaining lower than B.
It all started when I was a prefect at my school and college where I used to help students of different levels (including my friends from my own year) in learning difficult topics (in maths and science) and in preparing for exams. I have also helped a few teachers several times during an actual school lesson as teacher's assistant. But most importantly, in these many years as a private tutor, I have helped a lot of pupils only do well in their GCSEs and A-level. So far they have all achieved much higher standard than they were predicted by their teachers and this success of all these past tutees of mine makes me work even harder with all the new ones every year.

Just to assure you that I am not shy of putting in hard work I would like to bring to your attention that I did all my GCSEs in a single year instead of 2 and also ended up doing 2 of the subjects early. Even though maths was one of the early subjects, I still got A* and went on to do AS maths in the same year in which I also got A. I usually start with the current topics that student is studying in the school and explain to the student that topic and related background knowledge. As I teach one to one, my pace is faster than school and we usually finish the topic in one or sometimes two classes. And then we do previous topics and I explain doubts on those topics. I am 36 yrs old, happily married to my lovely wife Ren, and was born and raised in the United Kingdom.

I have a BEng (Hons) Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oxford Brookes University and have A-levels in Mathematics, Physics and Physical Education. Following my graduation I secured a junior project engineering position at a company in the Oil and Gas Industry in 2007. Hi, I'm Tom. I'm 25 and have been a professional software developer for 2 years, having finished my undergraduate degree in physics and computer science at Edinburgh in 2023. Since then I've been working full time and have just finished a masters level apprenticeship alongside my work. I used to do tutoring before and at the beginning of uni and really enjoyed it so am looking to get back into it! I've also got a DBS check (issued November 2025) and would be happy to show this if requested.

Teaching Experience:
Aside from my experience at school and uni, I've got experience in tutoring KS3 and GCSE maths, science and Spanish. Whilst at school I tutored one boy from year 8 to GCSE maths, science and Spanish and whilst at university tutored another in GCSE maths science and geography. Both of these were pupils were tutored using a combination of in person and online sessions. I also used to volunteer to do reading lessons at a local primary school and worked part time at young engineers whilst at university, teaching children from 3 to 11 years old the basics of science through lego

Tutoring Approach:
I've found in the past that the best approach to tutoring is to be very positive and flexible. I have never been a super forceful or strict tutor and think that trying to be too overbearing, particularly in sessions outside of or extra to school like tutoring, just makes people perform worse. I will always try and be positive and make sure sessions are not painful for students (as I remember how much doing homework can be a chore!), but equally make sure students are getting the most out of sessions by asking questions of them to demonstrate their knowledge and checking they're confident with what we've done.

I'm a Mechanical Engineering student at Imperial College London. I enjoy tutoring because I love helping students understand concepts that initially seem difficult. From my experience, even the most challenging topics can be simplified using analogies, helping students develop intuition and a deeper understanding of the subject.
