The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student's ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives.
I think that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe; this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be exciting and profitable.

My name is Marcia, and I am a PhD student in biomedical engineering. My project uses mathematical modelling to determine the optimal conditions for in vitro testing of new therapeutic agents. This project combines techniques and principles from mathematics, biology, physics and engineering. I received a studentship from the EPSRC to fund my studies. I am also a graduate with an MEng degree in Biomedical Engineering, awarded with first-class honours, from the University of Glasgow. I have a passion for mathematics and the sciences, and have always excelled in these subjects. My final year project for my MEng degree combined my skills in maths, physics and biology, and was based on the mathematical modelling of antibody drug therapy. Tutoring for exam preparation, better understanding of the subject, or an interest in (slightly) improving your breadth of knowledge. I am a soon to graduate S6 (Y13) student who will to study physics at university. From my own experiences, a subject is more enjoyable and easier if you know where the theory comes from. Many of my yearmates have expressed frustration over the course material bring too vague, and found that questions became much easier when we connected the dots between different equations.

Tutoring on areas of difficulty, consolidation or advancing further into the course if the pupil wishes so. The content will largely depend on the request and focus of the pupil, such as weekly breakdowns of questions or a more in depth explanation for learning points. Pupils often engage more when they find a topic entertaining or interesting, keeping a constant flow of conversation and discussion can help retain knowledge whilst being active.

The first class can be a free trial where we get to know each other and determine if you would like to start regular classes. I will assign optional homework with questions from online sources to help with consolidation if the pupil had not already done practice questions, otherwise the homework can be viewed as recommendations.

Personal Description:
I am a chartered engineer and I have been a part-time tutor for nearly 11 years. I achieved both my undergraduate Master's degree and PhD in mechanical engineering at Imperial College London. I myself have been passionate about maths, science and engineering ever since I learnt about climate change back in year 3. Since then I have always wanted to do as much as I can to make a difference and try to help with the problems we face involving energy and climate change.
Outside of engineering and tutoring I have many hobbies including cycling, archery, playing guitar and video gaming.

Teaching Experience:
I have been providing private tuition since summer 2014. In that time, I have taught over 500 hour's worth of lessons. I was also heavily involved with Outreach during my time at Imperial College London, which included both mentoring and leading academic day events and summer schools for school students from across the UK.

Tutoring Approach:
I would like to offer tuition for maths, physics and chemistry from year 5 up to year 11. Although I want every student I help to achieve the highest results possible, my main aim is to develop a firm understanding and interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects so that they may enjoy studying them and have a greater capability to take them on at higher levels if they so choose. I mostly tutor online, and since transitioning to online tutoring as a result of COVID I have successfully provided over 100 hours of tutoring to a number of clients through online platforms. I primarily use Discord to speak with my tutee and to screenshare an exam paper or textbook, and we have used shareable online whiteboards such as Miro to write on. I am always open to trying other online platforms if they are more suited to you. As long as I can hear my student clearly then I have found online tutoring to be just as effective as in person. I am very flexible with times for lessons, including doing lessons at weekends, so please do send a message asking if I am available.
