I am a full time A Level Physics and Mathematics teacher at a Tertiary College. We have about 50 students in each of years 12 and 13. 26 of our Physics students gained grade As at AS Level in 2006. 48% A and A* at A2 Level in June 2011. This is twice the Welsh average which puts us at the top of tree. 67% A*,A or B in 2012 in my class.Three of my students have won the Institute of Physics prize for the highest A Level marks in Wales with several gaining 600/600. I am a PhD mathematician, with a special interest in applied mathematics and statistics. I worked for some years in University departments as a tutor and then lecturer. More recently I have worked for almost two decades in industry as a mathematician at a prestigious research centre in Cambridge. The details of the correct approach vary from one tutee to another, but the principles remain the same. I seek to establish the student's ability within the context of a given aim and to then set realistic objectives.
I think that most students have more mathematical ability than they themselves believe; this can be brought out in a positive fashion once negative stereotypes are discarded. Also the application of mathematics to the real world can be exciting and profitable.

-I ensure each style is personalised for each student as everyone has a different method of learning and to cater to this, I ask the student a few questions at the very start to inform how the lessons will proceed thereafter.

-I've seen a lot of students who find visual diagrams and drawings the best way to learn (it's how I learn best too) so I often explain concepts in graphical ways using my drawing tablet and other interactive applications such as Isaac Physics. I also use Isaac Physics to set homework.

-I like relating things to practical applications in the real world to make sense of topics. E.g I'll often use examples involving video games and flashy RGB custom computer rigs to engage teenagers studying computer science.

-Have taught a range of students. Some grasp a concept immediately and are able to visualise it easily and others that do not grasp concepts as easily. For those, I often revisit content and consistently quiz them.

-Have taught students with learning disabilities and have quickly adapted my style to suit their requirements, taking a calm, compassionate approach.

-As mark schemes seem to get stricter and stricter, I ensure my students hit the little details required to get all the marks and I provide nice ways of remembering the pointers.

I can help to raise confidence by adapting to individual needs and share techniques to improve knowledge, understanding and exam technique. Working as an e examiner has helped me to pass on those all important tips to students once they fully grasp the content

Personal Description:
Hi there!
My name is Beth, I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham. I managed to receive 8 grade 9s during my GCSEs and 1 grade 8, as well as 3 As in my A levels (Maths, Physics and Graphic Communications). In the future I'm hoping to work in robotics/prosthetics, and I have such a genuine interest in both maths and physics (especially space and quantum!). I also love cooking and playing basketball.

Teaching Experience:
In terms of teaching children, I've just returned from my second year working at a youth summer camp in Canada. Here I was required to teach the kids wilderness survival skills, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, arts and crafts, and plenty more! We were also required to teach them leadership qualities and responsibilities, as well as fun camp songs and dances, with everything being very interactive.

Tutoring Approach:
My personal approach to tutoring is a mixture of interactive learning and individual work, making sure to cover all of the required content and keeping a large focus on past exam papers. Depending on what's needed, I like to focus on weaker areas before providing a more general overview, then fine tuning everything closer to the exam period.
