On successful completion of my PhD in 2001 I started work at Thales Research and Technology (TRT) where I led projects on Adaptive Learning Systems and Information Management. I initiated the first programme to span the three TRT laboratories in France, Netherlands and UK in the area of Cognitive Systems research. I then went on to set up and lead a large collaborative team between TRT and University of Surrey to study remote collaboration technologies. I joined General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited in 2005, primarily to ensure exploitation of DIF DTC technologies into the UK Ministry of Defence Equipment Programme. I received my Chartered Physicist status in 2004 and am now a director.

Teaching Experience:
Several students have improved by more than 4 grades after just six months of tuition with me, and commonly students improve by at least one or two grades. Many of my students who previously had lost their passion for Maths and Physics, go on to take these subjects to a further level. As a classroom teacher, I have worked with pupils across a wide range of abilities and confidence levels. This means I'm very used to identifying where a pupil is struggling, breaking difficult concepts into manageable steps and adapting explanations until we find one that works for them.

I also have a strong understanding of the SQA course requirements and the skills pupils need to develop to perform well in assessments and final exams.

Tutoring Approach:
My tutoring is tailored to the individual pupil rather than following a one-size-fits-all programme. We can focus on particular topics they find difficult, consolidate what they are currently learning in school, work through homework or prepare specifically for assessments and exams.

I like to combine clear explanations with plenty of worked examples and exam-style questions, particularly focusing on problem-solving, calculations and how to approach SQA questions effectively.

Most importantly, I want pupils to understand why they are doing something rather than simply memorising a method. My aim is to improve both their Physics ability and their confidence, so that eventually they can tackle questions much more independently.

As a recently retired Chartered Engineer I'm looking to help students to improve, and gain confidence in, their maths or science skills. This might be helping with subjects that the student finds difficult, catching up with missed work, assisting with coursework, or stretching a budding genius

I have been providing personal tuition to students for about 10 years. I only take on a couple of students at a time so that I can spend enough time with them. Most of my students have come to me through word of mouth.
