I am an academic and scholar who holds both a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and a MLitt (Master of Literature) from The University of Glasgow, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) honours degree from The University of Paisley. My first academic book 'Robert Taylor: Male Beauty, Masculinity and Stardom in Hollywood' (University Press of Mississippi, 2019) was shortlisted for the Best Monograph of the Year at BAFTSS Awards 2020 and my second academic book, 'Tyrone Power; Genre, Gender and Image in Classical Hollywood Cinema' (Edinburgh University Press, 2021) was released in February 2021. Among my other publications are chapters in anthologies for Palgrave Macmillan (2016) and Bloomsbury Academic (2021). I have contributed to several academic journals and been requested as a guest lecturer, guest speaker and reader/reviewer on several occasions. I am currently working on my next book, some academic papers for journals and chapters for scholarly edited collections.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. I will break down subjects into easily manageable blocks and make sure that my student understands the unit before moving on. I also like to vary my tutorials by having some in the form of lectures, some in the form of question and answers, some where I will give students feedback on homework they have done and suggestions to improve what they have done, etc.

I also find that on-line tuition is the best method and students can ask questions that they may not ask if they were face-to-face with someone, it is a much more relaxed approach but students get a lot out of it (and can save all the notes from lessons for use later on).

I am a retired fully qualified English teacher with a good English degree and postgraduate qualifications, along with many years of experience.

I realised long ago that it isn't easy for some students to reach their potential in large classes where perhaps a natural lack of confidence, shyness, peer pressure or even less-than-ideal behaviour from others in the classroom can work against even their best efforts. That's where a good tutor can be transformative. I began teaching later in life, after a successful marketing career in the pharmaceutical industry. This unusual background for a teacher has been of great benefit to my teaching, giving me confidence gained from experiences of travelling the world. The large number of 4 and 5* references on this and other tuition websites provide worthwhile evidence for this.

As well as tutor, I have also been a writer and editor for some major educational publishers including the BBC, C4 and EduSites, writing and editing many revision guides for GCSE and A-level, as well as having been the BBC Bitesize English teacher for some years, responding to students' queries. As well as enjoying literature, I am rather unusual in specialising in linguistics and grammar, and many of my A-level English Language teaching materials are used nationally. My business background helped me develop a confident-seeming personality, but I still remain a rather shy person underneath. It is this natural sensitivity, allied to unusually open and straightforward nature, that allows me to build confidence in students very quickly and very effectively. Schools can struggle to help quiet students but this is an area in which I can fairly say I excel.

I taught at the leading school in the area, the Beauchamp College in Oadby, Leicester; whilst there I regularly achieved among the top pass rates in the department. I have written educational materials for national publishers and was, for several years, the BBC Bitesize English teacher, having appeared in that role on national radio (Radio 1); many of my teaching materials are used by teachers and students across the country. I decided to start tutoring after my experience in trying to get tutors for my own children. As a professional working internationally I thought it would be easy to hand over this important element of their education to someone with both experience and patience. My notion was quickly turned on its head. The Tutors I found taught textbook style with the one shoe fits all approach. My children and others didn't fit into that mould. I very quickly realised that I could do a better job and took the role in house, initially teaching my own daughters before extending out to their friends.

Ben was educated in Guildford and specialised in the expressive arts. During these years, his creative flare became more apparent.

Ben progressed onto doing a Foundation Degree in Action Photography at Truro College where he specialised in sports Extreme Sports, Natural History, Social Documentary and Events Photography following this he began to prepare for a more commercial direction. Ben still maintained his roots in expressive art during the foundation degree but also developed his technical skills thoroughly, and this has been commented on though out his professional and teaching life.

In 2009, he progressed on to Plymouth University to study for his BA Honours in Photography where he achieved a (2.1) During this course, he spent time intricately studying the history of art and photography, and Ben spent many hours mastering skills in studio large and medium format photography. He concluded the year specialising in colour film, Medium format studio photography and focusing mainly on portraiture, with a project called 'The Paradox of Perfect Beauty'.

This study challenges the ideologies of what is defined as beauty throughout art history, sculpture, and figurative representation. It critically analyses the standardised figures and body shape used in art as well as in modern-day commercial advertising, fashion and other types of portraiture.

Ben worked for 3.5 years at an Apple APR shop in Guildford so has a very in-depth knowledge of Apple technology and software and during this time taught people of all ages to use Apple computer something he still tutors to this day in.

I prefer to teach over a 2-hour basis, and this allows for focused study and practical time of guided activity further to this I will travel for a lesson but ask that travel expenses are paid.
Lastly, due to previous experiences, I ask that 50% of the total job is paid upfront as a non refundable deposits on acceptance of the agreed package. I ask this due to the fact I have to pay the tutoring site based on the agreed amount a fee.

I have been tutoring photography from many years to all different ages and abilities from young kid's to University and Mature Learners, I started my teaching with teaching English in Thailand and working as an assistant youth worker and having to teach different subject and activities. I have a relaxed approach to teaching, trying to view someone's work objectively but giving prods and direction where needed. I like for my students to discover the answer themselves as this embeds the knowledge and allows them to master their subject. Upon realising that they can achieve and have mastered the skills needed, the satisfaction you see from them is the best part of the job. Every achievement is praised, and every downfall is considered not a failure but part of the learning curve.

Whilst, as an English teacher, I do enjoy a good book, my main interest lies in physical activity. I am passionate about physical fitness and everything that comes with it: flexibility, mobility and nutrition.

My main sport growing up was rugby, which has now been replaced with playing for a football team on a Saturday (much easier on the shoulders).

I am an avid traveller and love nothing more than a European city break or an adventure much further afield.

I have worked in the education sector for twelve years, with the last seven being as a senior leader in three different schools.

In the entertainment industry as a writer I've had feature screenplays produced and distributed, alongside festival writing award nominations. As an author, I have four fiction books published. Most recently I released a first factual book on film history called Noir, Nihilism, and Crime, The Forgotten Films 1970-1989.

I support cancer research and hospice charities, giving proceeds of my novels in dedication and in memory of my beautiful mum.

Teaching Experience:
I started tutoring two decades ago at colleges when I was asked to be a guest speaker. I actually fell into it by a case of mistaken identity! A teacher at an A Level college contacted me believing I was a different writer who ran workshops. We got talking about the commissioned writing I had done and my thoughts on how to write a story from a blank page. They asked if I'd ever considered tutoring? I was honest and said it had never crossed my mind. So they suggested I come in as a guest speaker and see what I thought. I enjoyed it so much that I was soon running 6 workshop lessons over a month at the college. I found helping guide and advise students creative writing ideas extremely worthwhile and quite exhilarating when they finished their concept. I then started running workshops at Universities, colleges, online, one-on-one. All purely from a case of mistaken identity originally!

Tutoring Approach:
The workshops, courses and online tutoring I've run have been structured for students interested in learning many aspects of film courses including - writing, filmmaking and film theory. I can tutor and advise students wanting to work in the entertainment industry for future careers, or, students wishing to complete a qualification. I also tutor adults of all ages who wish to develop ideas in their leisure time.

I tutor towards students' creative ideals and the educational institutions course syllabus. I've continued to mentor students afterwards working with them to achieve their goals and be proud of what they create. The key aspect when tutoring from my point of view is communication and collaboration. It requires hard work, dedication and full commitment from a tutor. I say to all new students wise words my mum used to tell me - "Believe in yourself. Through dedication and hard work, you can achieve anything".

I am a Cambridge and Royal College of Art graduate with five years of freelance tutoring experience. This is primarily at BTEC, A Level, University and for independent adult learners.

I have been in co-ordination with art and cultural institutes and regeneration programs both in Kent and London to teach film in public workshops including working with the Royal College of Art institute, Stories and Suppers, Dartford Arts Network and Medway Film Festival. I have worked for NGO`s in India teaching art and media, and I have four years of experience working freelance on film productions both pre and post.
