The tutor is the expert in subject knowledge and learning but it is the tutee who has the paramount role in their own education and excelling in their subjects. I firmly believe that the role of a tutor is that of a catalyst and the child's role in their own learning is of greater importance. I aim to guide the tutee to learn in a structured manner that so that the child does not waste their time jumping from topic to topic, randomly browsing a bit here and a bit there, as often happens. Honest school teachers will tell you that it is the noisy and disruptive pupils that get their attention, whereas the quite shy hardworking pupils tend to get neglected. Busy school teachers just do not have the time or energy to devote to helping their quieter or weaker pupils and it is these pupils that especially benefit from extra personal tuition. On the other hand a brighter pupil may be so far ahead of his or her peers that the teacher is just not able to give them the attention they need. During 2012/13 I worked at Levenshulme High school, an 11-16 girls school in Manchester, where I taught maths. I work mostly as a software developer and have been doing this, self employed, for over 20 years. Maths tuition makes up a significant part of my work, but it is no more than half. Previous work has included engineering, as a draughtsman and CAD operator. I retrained as a teacher in the 1990s during a period of unemployment, but apart from some part time work in further education I have not worked as a teacher until recently starting with tuition.

I have degree in Mathematical Education with Qualified Teacher Status and this included teaching in secondary school. I have also taught a Materials Science module in further education at the same time that I was training as a teacher. This was between 1993 and 1995.
I worked for an online tuition provider from November 2021 to December 2022, teaching maths to students between years 7 and 11, including GCSE revision. I taught around 400 lessons in that time.
At the time of writing this I am still providing online tuition but have a much reduced timetable while I try to acquire some more students.

For online tuition I use Zoom for the connection and a virtual whiteboard that allows me to share images and documents, and write and draw on them. My approach varies depending on the age and ability of the student. At the younger end We may be going over a topic that has been done in school recently and there will be more emphasis on the student answering some questions as we work through exercises.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching methodology centers around presenting students with challenging problems to assess their problem-solving approaches. Subsequently, I guide them toward more advanced techniques to enhance their skills. Having studied in China, I've gained exposure to innovative methods that I integrate into my teaching.

Additionally, I emphasize the importance of practicing with past papers. By utilizing past exam papers and providing targeted guidance, I aim to help students achieve a remarkable 90% success rate. This method not only builds their confidence but also ensures they are well-prepared for assessments and exams.

Personal Description:
I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Oxford studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I achieved 3 A*s at A-Level in Maths, Politics and Economics, as well as 8 Grade 9s and 2 Grade 8s at GCSE. I am strongly committed to academic success and hugely passionate about teaching. I am able to tutor online during my holidays.

Teaching Experience:
I have many years of experience with private tuition and giving support to younger students in school across a range of subjects. This includes leading group revision sessions as well as providing individual help with exam questions. Having sat the exams that my students are working towards, I am in a very strong position to help them succeed.
