I am an independent tutor with a strong scientific background and have lived in England since Aug 1965. Most of my school and college education took place in Dudley (West Midlands) and I studied Biochemistry, at Leeds University (1975-8). I am married and have lived in Cheshire since Dec 1978. I have a passion for my degree and I think that the joy of physical science problem solving is one that can be easily lost in a school environment. With a more tailored approach to teaching, I hope to be able to give students a better understanding of how the tools that they learn work, which enables them to approach exams and further levels with more confidence, whilst also making the subject more enjoyable.

Teaching Experience:
I have experience tutoring for GCSE as an academic mentor at school with both maths and physics. I have also helped lower-level undergraduates with topics of concern.
Although I don't have lots of formal teaching experience, I love to help people understand new topics and have abundant energy to inspire students.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that the subjects that I am looking to tutor are genuinely enjoyable if they are presented in the proper way and students are able to explore where their curiosity takes them. Which provides enjoyment and a great sense of achievement
For older students, however, I do not want to undermine the importance of being properly prepared for public examinations. The beauty of maths and physics is that the amount of rote learning is much less than other subjects and practice problem solving and understanding concepts is the key to success, this provides much more engaging revision. Although if you are struggling with teaching yourself a new topic or just didn't find that you 'got it' in class, it can be incredibly demoralising. This is where a second explanation or some targeted understanding can help out. moreover, with regular meetings, we can increase the efficiency of your study and I can teach you some tips on self-assessment and identifying in what manner you can help yourself, which is a vital skill the higher up the educational ladder you climb.

For younger students, my approach is to build a strong foundation of the basic skills whilst exploring more intricate concepts in a guided but ambitious manner. I believe that many students are capable of going far beyond the scope of their syllabuses, with the right guidance and encouragement.

I am a highly experienced, qualified Maths teacher with a track record of good results. I have a First Class Honors BSc in Mathematics from Durham University and a PGCE from Kings College London. I am a well-rounded, high-achieving and compassionate person. I achieved 5 As at A level and have a diploma in piano performance.

Teaching Experience:
I have been a qualified classroom teacher for 8 years and, in addition, have tutored students ranging from age 7 up to adult. I have taught at a Grammar School in the UK as well as private schools in Malaysia and the UK. My classroom teaching has been for students aged between 11 and 18 and includes GCSE, IGCSE, IB and A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. My students have always achieved well due to the fact that I inspire them to enjoy the subject and know how best to prepare them for their exams. This is because I have an in-depth knowledge of the curriculum as well as the common misconceptions students have for each topic.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that every student is capable of succeeding in Maths as long as they are taught in a way suited to them. I also believe that it is important in Maths to truly understand the content and how it all fits together. Making links between topics is vital as there is then less to remember and it becomes much easier to recall information in future. Maths is a subject which requires a lot of resilience and many students suffer from Maths anxiety because of the fear of getting it wrong. In the classroom, students can often struggle if they are not receiving the individual support they need and, as a tutor, I have a unique opportunity to give this.

As a tutor, my first task is to ensure that each student believes they can succeed. I pride myself on my ability to connect with my students, work out what they need in order to understand the content and create a safe environment where they are not afraid to make mistakes. I show them that mistakes are learning points in Maths and the path to success is to persevere through these and adapt your knowledge as you progress through each topic. I am a PhD student at the University of Manchester researching materials for applications to nuclear fusion. I am deeply passionate about my subject, although I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea! I have been an online tutor since October 2019 and have seen some of my students make 3 grades progress in 3 months. I have worked with a variety of exam boards including international qualifications.

I try to keep my sessions relatively relaxed as I strongly believe that the best way to learn is when you feel most comfortable. As a fellow student, I can relate to my students and offer them some advice about their studies outside of the classroom.
