I have always kept up my interest in maths by studying with the Open University and I particularly enjoy finding ways to use games and puzzles to create interest and understanding. I worked in business computing and always enjoyed the training side of the job. At the moment I am working as a private tutor, helping my husband to renovate and restore a seventeenth century house and training an unruly young sprollie dog.

I have a PGCE in secondary maths teaching and taught in a secondary school for one year. During my career in IT as an analyst/programmer I trained staff in programming techniques, and also trained users as part of the implementation of the many systems I was involved in. I have just finished a PhD in maths at Newcastle University so it goes without saying I'm enthusiastic about both maths and physics. On top of this I have a wide variety of interests, and this allows me to find ways of explaining things that the people I'm tutoring can relate to.

While studying at Newcastle I've taken many tutorials for students taking courses in Maths. For the past 6 years I've also worked in a tutoring drop-in centre where any student at Newcastle University can come to ask maths questions. Engineering is one of the hardest subjects you can study, and it doesn't help when module content is disorganised, learning materials are messy and hard to follow, and when lecturers are too busy to respond to your questions. My overall aim is to teach you to become an independent learner, to teach you how to learn, so that you can learn regardless of the support from your university, and so you can continue learning when you leave university into whatever career path you take.
