I have been a tutor for over 15 years. Along the way, I have learnt a lot about the role and how significant it can be. For some students, I am a mentor for their whole educational experience whilst others see me as a specialist in one area.

Alongside tutoring, I am a professional actor (hence the posey photo!) and have recently worked at the National Theatre and onscreen. Acting has deepened my ability to connect with others on a personal level, fostering empathy and understanding - qualities that I bring directly into my tutoring. Hello, my name is Robert. Learning and teaching in some form has always been part of my life; my personal motto is "Never stop asking questions....". I am a dad of two lively children (10 & 7), a primary teacher and a private tutor. I have a can-do approach to life and am never happier than when I am busy with my work or with my family. I believe the greatest benefit of 1:1 tutoring (or tutoring small groups), is that it is so much easier to tailor the learning to the student's needs, aiding understanding and building on that towards mastery of a subject. Progress is often swift because as has been so often stated, 1:1 tuition for an hour is probably the equivalent of several days in the classroom! My initial approach is to assess the student's needs in the first couple of sessions, using the information gleaned to build a program of study that is particular to that student. I enjoy the challenge of breaking mathematical problems down to their basics so that learners of all abilities can access the content on GCSE and A-level specifications. In my experience, I have seen how pupils can get worked up about maths and this can create a mental block to the subject. I will never assume that a pupils knows a particular fact and will patiently work back to some foundational understanding before building concepts back up.
I have amassed a variety of resources over the years and use these to explain the concepts that underly the subject at GCSE and A-level. I also have a plentiful supply of past paper resources which I work through with pupils in order for them to feel confident with the questions that they will face in exams.
