I also value a child's input as they are good judges of what they feel they do well and what they may need help with. At university, I was the Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious Oxford University Undergraduate Law Journal. If essay writing is the main focus point I will plan for the main part of the lesson to either help write a practice paragraph or plan a question together. If revision techniques are the main focus point then I'll come up with fun ways to help the students revise and want to continue revising after the session ends. I'll always also ask the student their preferred way of learning at the start of the lesson and then at the end of it I'll ask again and make sure they found the lesson okay.
