I have a first degree in History and English and a masters in Art History. I have been teaching successfully in London and Norfolk for the past 30 years and can honestly say that I have never had a student fail, whether it be for an entrance exam or GCSE, 'A' level or even at University helping with a final dissertation. I have taught at further education colleges in and around London as well as private schools mainly in English and History for G.C.S.E. and 'A' Level students. Tutoring Approach:
In the case of coursework for GCSE or 'A' level I am happy to have students email their work for me to check over and then have a lesson in person or on-line. With regard to working towards examinations, I prefer to use the question papers as the basis for learning as generally each exam board has a preference for the way in which questions are answered especially in the subjects I teach. English and History especially are open to interpretation. I believe the need to read around the subject and offer a wider knowledge than is generally taught at schools or colleges is vital. Regular tuition is therefore preferable, so that all problems can be addressed over a period of time but I am flexible as to how many lessons are needed.I am also happy to teach on-line using Skype or similar if preferred, as I have been doing this over Covid and thereafter.

Having successfully completed a PhD in History in 2011 following a BA in History (2005) and MA in Medieval History (2006), I have recently authored a book on Cultural Trends in Medieval Poetry, set to be published by E.J. Brill in 2016. I have tutored English for many years, specialising in language analysis and literary interpretation. I am a highly experienced educationalist with a wholistic approach and a wide range of work experience before training as a teacher.

Prior to becoming a qualified teacher my professional experience includes IT, social work, property maintenance, music, photography and education & employment while my studies at undergraduate included nine subjects. Hi guys, to start off with my academic background: I studied at Winchester College and Cambridge University.

I was generally a straight A* student at Winchester, and in my final exams I received some of the highest Cambridge Pre-U grades in the UK for my subjects of Philosophy & Theology, Russian and French (these were D1, D1, D2 - which translates in A-Level terms to A**, A**, A*). At Cambridge I studied a mix of Theology and Philosophy, with a focus on philosophy (ethics and metaphysics), history and literature papers.

In terms of my personal background: I was born in London and have lived in Islington most of my life. I've travelled a great deal, and in my gap year I spent stretches of time living in and travelling around America, Italy, Malta, Russia, Jordan and Pakistan.

In my free time I like classic cinema (Hitchcock especially) and novels (Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Dickens are my favourites) but I'm curious about everything really, and I read books of any kind whenever I have the time - especially those relating to History (classical and modern), Philosophy, Theology, Politics, and Literary Analysis.

For most of my professional life so far I've worked as a salesman, lawyer and corporate strategist. I like theatre and stand-up and sketch comedy - Dylan Moran and John Cleese are my favourite comedians - and at Cambridge I performed in a couple of sketch comedy shows alongside members of the Footlights.

I'm friendly, good-humoured, energetic and I love teaching more than anything else!

1. So first of all we'll have an introductory session to determine what your interests, strengths/weaknesses and ultimate aims are. If you like me then we can have another session!

I am a hardworking, enthusiastic mother of a 3 year old boy. I am a Primary School Teacher and have worked with many children in variety of settings and roles. I am versatile and good at adapting to new situations. I am reliable and punctual and fair. I have worked with children since leaving school, it was always something I was passionate about. I then took a year out of work to undertake my PGCE to become a Qualified Primary School Teacher. I worked in a school in Ashford for my NQT year and then worked in a school in Stanwell for the next 4 years until I had my son, who is now nearly 3 years old. Since my son was born, I have worked as a nanny for families who allow a nanny with own child. My last role was for nearly 2 years but unfortunately my role was made redundant because the parents are now working from home and they no longer needed the level of support they needed before COVID. I am currently working with a family of 5 for 3 afternoons a week providing wrap around care. I also tutor their son who is 9 years old. He has made significant progress with his reading and writing.

I enjoy tutoring children because it means I can give them my undivided attention which means I can understand that particular child's knowledge and skills on a far deeper level. This is where my Early Years background really helps as I can identify different learning styles and adapt the way I teach to suit each child. This is very much a part of the Early Years Curriculum so I am used to being reflective and using different strategies to help children learn to the best of their ability. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to see how children grow and learn and most of all gain in confidence so they are able to learn more effectively in all their subjects.
Throughout the session I will assess the child's progress and use this information to plan for the next session. As the spiral curriculum dictates I will also revisit past learning to ensure the child has a firm grasp of the concepts that have been taught previously. I would like to go through a grammar book that I mostly rely on when teaching languages. However, if your level is above the beginner level, we can also do speaking sessions, where I can occasionally correct mistakes, taking notes about them.
