With nearly 15 years of online and in-person tutoring French Common Entrance/13+, Westminster Challenge, Winchester entrance, GCSE, IGCSE, A-level, Pre-U, and SAT, I`m a 50-year old graduate of the excellent University of Sussex languages course with a First Class Honours degree in French and Russian. I lived for four years in Paris where I mastered the language and the accent!

I have also acted in plays in French, taking on the role of Alphonse in a production of The School for Wives, and touring to schools abroad to perform in front of students learning French elsewhere in Europe.

I like to stay abreast of French culture and society, read Le Figaro everyday, and regularly watch French TV news and discussion shows.

Teaching Experience:
I have tutored students at all levels, from 13+ entrance exams, including the Westminster Challenge, to most UK exam boards at GCSE, IGCSE and A-level, and I have also helped prepare students for their SAT in French and the DELF exam. I've taught adults who are complete beginners, or have some vague memories of what they learned at school, as well as helping several students gain entry to Westminster School via their Challenge exam

Since the switch to mostly online teaching, I have become an expert in making the most of the resources available, particularly the collaborative tools provided by Google, among others, which are particularly good for working on exercises and explaining grammar in a clear, helpful way.

Successes from the last (2019-20) academic year included: an two As at A-level, and two 9s at IGCSE, as well as entrance to Winchester College via their own exam.

For A-level students, I have already taught Camus's L'Etranger, Françoise Sagan's Bonjour Tristesse, Joseph Joffo's Un Sac de Billes, and Zola's Thérèse Raquin, and am very familiar with all the other set texts. Tutoring Approach:
It is important to tailor lessons specifically to a student's needs, but my general method is to engage him or her at a level just above their 'comfort zone'. Learning is about challenging yourself to do better, and it is crucial for a tutor to be supportive and encouraging, and also to keep the bar high.

Lessons can be conducted entirely in French, or in a mixture of English and French. I can work alongside a student's existing course (that is, from a textbook a student is already following), or we can use course books that I recommend.

Where the level allows, I like to draw upon material from contemporary sources such as French news magazines.

For "conversation classes", I find it is useful to base the discussion on an article or a book to help build vocabulary, and also think that incorporating grammar instruction (where appropriate) can be a good idea.

I have 7 years experience working as a Spanish teacher in secondary schools in London including Alleyn's, Lady Margaret School and Kingsdale, teaching years 7 to 13. My exam classes have a very good track record. This year, my year 11 class are predicted 58% grades 9 to 8 and 100% 9 to 6, and my A Level class 63% A*-A and 88% A*-B. I have worked with both Edexcel and AQA in this time, so I know what it takes to get the best grades, especially at GCSE. I am an Open University graduate having completed an BA(Hons) degree. I chose my own programme of study which consisted of French,English Language Studies with GCSE/Standard grade Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. After my degree, I undertook an A-level/Higher Grade Maths course and GCSE/Standard Grade level Latin course to keep my study skills fresh and updated whilst complimenting my degree.

I lived and worked in France from 1982 to 1985. I have always spent the summer holidays from the age of 12 living with a French family and feel equally at home in France or England. From school age I knew I wanted to travel and find new places learning the language as I went. I enjoy reading, music, films and French food isn't bad either.

My initial teaching experience was with 'Le Club Francais' where I was in charge of a weekly after school club of 5 - 11 year olds. This was great fun as learning was channelled through games.
My friend's son had extra lessons after school to pass his oral French which he did with flying colours and commendation from his teacher.
A teacher from a nearby school wanted to move to France, so asked for help with pronunciation and grammar.
I have also translated a marketing leaflet for a company in Bradford and am the voice at the end of a help line for French speaking residents who wish to move house.

I believe that enjoyment is the motivation for learning. To make sure that a lesson is visually, orally and kinaesthetically appealing to students will ensure maximum attention span and maximise learning and long term memory retention. My name is Haidee, I'm a 19 year old from Liverpool studying French at The University of Liverpool. (I often go to Kirkby and Fazackerly to work and see family so would often be available to tutor in that area too). I have thoroughly enjoyed learning French for 8 years and would love to pass on my knowledge so that you can enjoy learning French too! This is my first time tutoring but I have a genuine love and flair for languages and have enjoyed teaching friends in my own time, so please don't let this put you off as I would love to help!

In school I sat my GCSE early at the age of 14 (year 9), passing with a B. I then continued to study French for the final two years of school and passed again with an A*. I also started studying Spanish in the last two years and passed with an A. During college I studied French to A2 level, passing with a B. In my time in college I spent a week each year in Montpellier living with a French family and attending a French language school, which I really enjoyed and feel helped me with my learning.

In my free time I love to cook (although I'm not very good at it!), go out for meals (when my cooking goes wrong!), read and watch films. I also love to practise Tae Kwon Do, which I started at the age of 15, although I don't do this since I moved away to university.

This is my first time trying tutoring, but I often helped my sister with her French to GCSE level. I also helped a friend of mine who struggled in school to pass her English and Maths GCSE by using imaginative teaching and memory techniques, to which she was very grateful. Due to having friends that also study languages I am used to being able to help others in areas in which they struggle. Throughout my learning experience I have found that it is best to learn the basic rules and grammar of a language from the start, as this has made it easier to build on this. I am a proactive, dedicated teacher hailing from Montpellier, southern France, with a passion for teaching. I completed a PhD in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2018, and became an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE). I did very badly (20%) in my core language and similarly in the oral exam. I had around 1-2 weeks of sessions with Nicolas and I could not have asked for more. We did a few past papers. And even though we did not know what was likely to come up in the exam, he was very good at helping me pinpoint the important information in a passage and how to respond to the questions. I have been fortunate enough to have Nicolas as my French tutor. Having only 2 months to learn French before moving to Paris, Nicolas planned the course really well and I came out of it feeling ready to face the real French people. Nicolas is organized and very pleasant to be around. He is so helpful even if it is something, which is not related to the lesson. Nicolas adapted the lesson to my needs and plans the lessons every time beforehand. The material he uses to teach is quality and his approach in teaching is very easy to understand. I would highly recommend Nicolas to tutor French at any level.

Tutoring Approach:
I use the Direct Method or Communicative Method. It depends obviously on your level. I still provide explanations in English.

Very often ,many people's only previous experience of learning a language has been at school ,where a great deal of emphasis was placed with the purpose of passing an examination .However, teaching approaches to modern language training have changed enormously in recent years ,and as a result ,learning a language is now a lot more fun and a far more rewarding experience!

Languages are now widely taught using a method known as the Communicative Approach or Direct Method, whereby the teacher conducts the session almost entirely in the target language regardless of the student's level. I reckon it is the best way to immerse yourself into a new culture.

Of course, depending on your level, I will still give explanations and instructions in English for those wishing to do so.

While it may take getting used to initially, the method has proven to be highly effective and is adopted by language training organisation around the world.

Teaching Experience:
I have been a Teaching Fellow at Lancaster University since Sept 2011, prior to this I was a Teaching Fellow at Bath University and an hourly -based language tutor at Bristol university.
I have also taught privately (groups and individuals in company) and I am currently teaching as an hourly based tutor for Lancaster languages ,Lancaster .

Tutoring Approach:
I am a very dedicated and sensitive language tutor with years of experience, I enjoy teaching and get a great satisfaction out of seeing my students progress and become proficient.
I know how to adapt my teaching methods to individual requirements. My teaching style is student-focused, I use the target language mostly, but I am flexible enough to use some English for the more demanding grammar points. My lessons are very interactive, oral practice and listening feature highly in my lesson plans. Although I prefer to use a coursebook such as Facon de Parler to structure my teaching, I also include a number of mixed medias and online resources (videos, audios, films) to complement the programme. To me, culture is important too, so I include documents such as films, news items and material relating to everyday life in France and current affairs (traditions, tourism, multiculturalism, institutions, politics). I set regular homework and additional tasks online in order to create a full teaching environment for the student for the duration of their course.

Personal Description:
I am a PhD candidate at Cardiff University, where I research contemporary forms of subtitling. I have a Master's Degree in Translation Studies - for which I received a high Distinction and Best Postgraduate Dissertation - and a Bachelor's Degree in French and Spanish - for which I was awarded First-class Honours and an Excellence Scholarship. I have also been awarded a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of my teaching contributions at Cardiff University, where I have taught undergraduate French and Spanish language, history, and culture for four years.

I have lived in both Toulouse, France and Barcelona, Spain, where I was able to immerse myself fully in French, Spanish, and Catalan language and culture respectively. My passion for languages has very much informed my choice of career so far, both academic and professional.

I know from first-hand experience that learning a language has the most profound impact, giving the learner an insight and a pathway into entirely new cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. This is an experience that I have been fortunate to have for myself, and therefore wish to help others to discover for themselves.

Aside from work, I am a keen athlete and photographer. I spend most of my free time swimming, doing sport, or adventuring with my film camera in hand.

Teaching Experience:
I have amassed a broad range of teaching and coaching experiences in recent years. These include, most recently, preparing and delivering seminars on Spanish and French language, translation, and culture to undergraduate students at Cardiff University. This has entailed gauging and adapting to the varied abilities of an entire cohort, producing learning materials that will guide and challenge different students appropriately, and providing bespoke, individual feedback to ensure each student's personal development. I am currently performing this teaching role face-to-face, but had until recently done so online due to the pandemic. As such, I feel comfortable engaging with my students in either setting.

I am also employed as a mentor and tutor for students enrolled in an online translation course on the Futurelearn platform. This course attracts thousands of students from around the world, and so gives me the opportunity to teach and to facilitate discussions between individuals with a fascinating range of perspectives, experiences, and abilities. Again, this role requires me to find a balance between delivering a general syllabus at the right pace so that every student is challenged and fulfilled, and, simultaneously, taking the time to adapt and engage with people on a personal, one-to-one basis. Building on this, I have also tutored talented young research students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds through the internationally acclaimed Lumiere Scholarship Programme.

I am a Fellow of Advance HE (formally the Higher Education Academy), a not-for-profit organisation which trains and awards educators in contemporary teaching methods and theories, and which is universally reputed across the higher education sector. The portfolios that I have produced and the training that I have completed for these awards has honed my investment in centring EDI in my teaching practices; my primary focal points have been accessibility, student transitions, and digital literacy.

Thanks to my love of sports from a young age, I have over a decade of coaching experience, ranging from football and rugby to ultimate frisbee. While not directly related to academic learning, I have always found a valuable crossover in the dynamic between player and coach and that between student and teacher. Both involve accepting (and, I believe, finding the joy in) the responsibility you have for guiding and shaping someone else's growth. This is an aspect of teaching and coaching that I have always found hugely fulfilling and rewarding.

In my time at university, I have occupied a number of wellbeing- and support-related roles. I believe that a focus on mental and physical health is essential in any educational setting.

Tutoring Approach:
As I have alluded to, I believe in the value of engaging with students on an individual level. By adapting different teaching methods and elements of the relevant content according to the learning style and existing knowledge of the student in question, you can always find the best approach to the subject matter for them personally. In my experience, this leads to a fairly free and engaging learning environment, while also maintaining a necessary level of proximity to the syllabus.

Most importantly, though, this approach means that the student is more likely to genuinely enjoy their learning. In education as in any area of life, the best results come when you love what you do.

Personal Description:
First-class graduate of the University of Cambridge, I have tutored professionally since January 2023 and have worked in secondary schools in the UK between March 2017 and July 2018 full-time, working supply between February 2023 and July 2024.

I have tutored 4 students thus far, from Year 10 or 11 until their GCSE exams. My students have had great successes: my first student climbed 2 and 3 grades in their English GCSEs, passing them and allowing them to move on to sixth form without resits; another student achieved 8s in both English GCSEs, way higher than expected, and climbed grades over time in Maths; whilst another student also passed GCSE English Literature first time, with a Grade 4, well above his initial starting grade when we began tutoring.

My secondary school experience includes time as a full-time Cover Supervisor (March - July 2017), full-time Learning Support Assistant including sole teaching of KS3 SEN Literacy classes (September 2017 to July 2018), as well as supply LSA, Cover Supervisor and Exam Invigilator work.

I work with whoever, whatever your current grade, and I always aim to listen and understand who you are and what works well for you. Perhaps you're creative and into drawing; perhaps you are more analytical; perhaps you want to cover the basics. I always ensure my teaching is bespoke - I pay attention to what works and what does not.
