I am an academic and scholar who holds both a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and a MLitt (Master of Literature) from The University of Glasgow, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) honours degree from The University of Paisley. My first academic book 'Robert Taylor: Male Beauty, Masculinity and Stardom in Hollywood' (University Press of Mississippi, 2019) was shortlisted for the Best Monograph of the Year at BAFTSS Awards 2020 and my second academic book, 'Tyrone Power; Genre, Gender and Image in Classical Hollywood Cinema' (Edinburgh University Press, 2021) was released in February 2021. Among my other publications are chapters in anthologies for Palgrave Macmillan (2016) and Bloomsbury Academic (2021). I have contributed to several academic journals and been requested as a guest lecturer, guest speaker and reader/reviewer on several occasions. Tutoring Approach:
I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. I will break down subjects into easily manageable blocks and make sure that my student understands the unit before moving on. I also like to vary my tutorials by having some in the form of lectures, some in the form of question and answers, some where I will give students feedback on homework they have done and suggestions to improve what they have done, etc.

I also find that on-line tuition is the best method and students can ask questions that they may not ask if they were face-to-face with someone, it is a much more relaxed approach but students get a lot out of it (and can save all the notes from lessons for use later on).

My teaching approach to tutoring varies from objective to objective. Languages should always be taught in a full immersion style, especially when it is targeting groups of people who are doing it for either vocational or personal reasons.
Tutoring of subjects such as languages with an objective such as GCSE or Highers or indeed University exams must take into account the syllabus that students must complete in order to reach their target: i.e. pass exams and, at the same time, learn in an effective though 'unforgettable' way. The majority of classes must be delivered in the target language, however in order to meet timing of syllabus coverage and exams some of the concept must be strengthened in the student's language.
In an ideal world, where no exams or timed targets exist, then tutoring of a language should happen 100% in the target language.

Whilst, as an English teacher, I do enjoy a good book, my main interest lies in physical activity. I am passionate about physical fitness and everything that comes with it: flexibility, mobility and nutrition.

My main sport growing up was rugby, which has now been replaced with playing for a football team on a Saturday (much easier on the shoulders).

Through a decade of tutoring experience, I feel that it is vital to first assess the student's current ability and discover their most pressing need. Once this has been discovered, we will work towards tangible targets, whilst still focusing on priorities such as vocabulary, complex punctuation and improving a student's ability to express their ideas on paper.

My sessions are as interactive as possible, to allow the students to approach their learning in a contextual way that they can relate to real-life. I also like to promote a student's ability to articulate their ideas verbally through discussion, in order to develop their written skills.

I have a strong foundation in Film and Media, which is clearly exemplified by my degree and my experience in the media prior to becoming a teacher. A key focus within my degree was the making of new and innovative content for emerging new media technologies, digital broadcasting underlined by learning traditional narrative structures and learning the production process from pre-production to post-production for Film and TV. My degree gave me a strong foundation in the skills required for creating creative media and film productions across a range of media platforms, as well as providing me with the fundamental theoretical concepts underlying film, digital media and communication technologies.

Throughout my teaching career, I have regularly achieved grades of 'outstanding', which has been consistent throughout by PGCE and NQT, leading me to deliver whole school insets on teaching and learning on creative and innovative strategies using new media technologies to raise standards. My teaching is constantly recognised for my creative approach to resources and the use of visual media technology. I have produced the Media and Film curriculum two-year programmes for the past 10 years and designed several schemes of work for GCSE and A Level. I've been teaching and lecturing for 15 years on different film movements and periods through early cinema to present day. I regularly analyse key film texts exploring all areas of film form and the aesthetical quality. I have a strong knowledge on the histrionics of film through intellectual engagement. My ability to teach practical filmmaking from production and post-production has driven my love for cinema. I use the study of film scenes to support actors in analysing actor's choices, tactics and objectives, voice, movement and how actors work in different screen compositions and frames.

Tutoring Approach:
My teaching style is adaptable to the needs of the student. However, I aim to create a constructive forum, with informal discussion, to reignite a passion for film, media or other screen studies. Lessons may involve close analysis of a particular scene to understand the basic visual styles, helping the student understand specific terminology. Alternatively, it may look at the work of a director and discuss a collective aesthetic throughout their career. I have a MA in Production Design for Film and Television from Kingston University and a BA Hons in Furniture Design and Applied Arts from Edinburgh College of Art. I have worked in the film and television industry since 2004. I lead large teams of specialist designers, art directors, junior assistants, crafts people and construction teams. And I collaborate closely with other experts within the industry including cinematographers, directors and screenwriters.

A production designer designs the worlds in which the TV Drama or film is set. That includes working with location people to choose locations in which to film - and building sets in studios. It can also involve working closely with SFX teams. The role juggles creative vision with practical project management. I am a passionate English teacher with experience working with Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students both in mainstream school settings, as well as online as part of alternative provision for both groups and 1:1. I have experience working with students with high anxiety and social/emotional/mental health challenges that present a barrier to accessing lessons in school, or benefit from further tuition. I have a lot of experience working with students with SEND, particularly students with ADHD, ASD and/or dyslexia.
