Hello, my name is Lucy- I am a specialist SEND tutor and I am particularly passionate about guiding young people, who have been or are disengaged by school, through their maths and English GCSEs to help them achieve a grade 4 on their first attempt. However, I also support young people at KS1/2/3.

One of my strengths is flexibility and adapting my approach to each individual young person. My sessions can be very different depending on who I am working with, but the common starting point is always building a trusting relationship. I spend time getting to know the young person as an individual - their interests, strengths, communication style, motivations and what helps them to feel safe and comfortable. Some young people are ready to quickly embark on 'traditional' learning, while others may need a little longer to build the trust.

As a parent, I understand the challenges young people face in their learning and that school, for many, is not an easy environment for learning and embedding skills, particularly if a young person has difficulty with processing and working memory. My own son has had these difficulties so I very much come at it from an angle of lived experience which can be hugely helpful for the families I support.

Teaching Experience:
I have many years experience working as an EYFS, KS1, KS2 teacher in London and Oxfordshire and more recently a SEND teacher in a special school teaching young people up to the age of 16. I have also taught French and bilingual students (up to the age of 17) at the British Council in Paris and have taught in the American elementary school system.

For the last two years I have been working as a 1:1 tutor for young people who are not accessing education- either on an EOTAS package or receiving alternative provision or EHE. I am highly experienced supporting young people with a wide range of special educational needs, including autism (ASC), demand avoidant profiles, ADHD, SEMH, dyslexia and associated communication, learning, sensory and emotional needs.

Tutoring Approach:
I keep sessions low demand, particularly where a young person has experienced anxiety or disengagement from education or who has a demand avoidant profile. I give the young person choice and control within a wider structure guided by me; for example they may choose the order of our learning from a selection of activities including some that are simply fun/movement.

I often use strategies such as 'body doubling' to support with a concept that a student may feel is too challenging and would otherwise not want to attempt. Also lots of modelling to give the student confidence in tackling a more challenging question or problem. Sometimes, a young people learns best doing 'their thing' while I do 'my thing'- the pressure is removed and very often the young person is intrigued enough to see what I am up to.

My experience has shown me that there is no single approach that works for all young people with SEND. I adapt my teaching to the individual, recognising their strengths and barriers to learning and I believe that this is what I am particularly good at. Throughout my teaching career my philosophy, closely linked to the Polyvagal theory has been simple 'A happy learner makes a good learner'. And this is what I aim for with every young person that I support, in every session.

I am an academic and scholar who holds both a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) and a MLitt (Master of Literature) from The University of Glasgow, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) honours degree from The University of Paisley.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. Having myself struggled with poor teachers, or unwieldy subject matter, I know that, with the right teachers, such areas can come alive. I am currently a grade-one "outstanding" teacher in my present school, and have been delivering KS3, GCSE and A Level English, Maths and History in the secondary and sixth-form sectors for the past 16 years, in which time my results have far surpassed national pass rates. Moreover, due to these outstanding results and innovative teaching methods, I have served as Assistant Head of Department; helping us to be awarded an internal grade 1 "outstanding" rating for the 6 years in which I held the post. Furthermore, I also have extensive experience as an "Advanced Practitioner"-tasked with turning around failing cohorts in some of the UK's toughest classrooms, as well as my time as an examiner for a variety of GCSE/A Level exam boards.

Teaching Experience:
I have a broad range of experience turning around struggling students in some of the UK's toughest classrooms, as well as challenging high achieving learners in the pursuit of academic excellence. In my teaching and tutoring career thus far, I have taught across the curriculum age-ranges (7-18 years), as well as undergraduate and postgraduate level students, and specialise in teaching troubled learners lacking confidence, whilst pushing very bright pupils.

As a child, I learned by being told, by beatings, shaming and a strict examination system. As you can imagine I didn't learn much that I could later apply to my academic life. As a result, I became an inveterate learner, always interested in learning the next thing. At one point, the drive to learn was because I didn't see myself as being good enough. Later on, that drive became an interest in discovering my own abilities as well as about helping others. I have now learned so much about how not to teach that I have gained good insight into how learning happens. I am keen to ensure all my learners learn how to learn and understand how to apply what they discover.

Teaching Experience:
My background is in teaching, training and facilitation. I have over 25 years experience of teaching in different forms having worked within primary, secondary and further education settings. I am an NVQ / TAQA assessor and trained and assessed Parenting Practitioners and other candidates up to Level 5 in Health & Social Care. Tutoring Approach:
Being a private tutor used to be the preserve of only those with the highest qualifications and the greatest experience. Now all that's changed.

However good a tutor is, the learner needs to be astute in order know if the tutor is a good match for her / him. Importantly, making the right choice can be complex.
Here are three tips to help you decide if I am or someone else is right for you. The following tips describe how I teach and how I will enable you to be an independent learner.

1. Look for a tutor who can teach you how to learn
Here's a funny thing… learners study a subject, sometimes for months and years and can come away with no long-term memory of the underpinning principles of the subject. As disturbing, they have no ongoing understanding of the subject. They are unable to apply what they tried to learn. This is easily resolved by clearing up past issues with learning. In Applied Scholastics it is now well known that if as a learner, you are helped to do so, you can learn any subject. This is central to how I teach.

2. Look for tutors who understand the main barriers to learning and can help you overcome them
There are three main barriers to study. They relate to confusion over an idea, missing out critical steps and having unclear ideas about the subject under study. Gaining a day to day facility with overcoming those barriers is key to effective and efficient study. I use these methods to help my own reading and study. I will introduce them to you so that you can use them too.

Sometimes, a learner during a course of study will find that s/he wants to give up. Have you ever experienced this? Whenever that happens it is because there is something - an idea, a symbol, a form of punctuation, the use of a word, or something else - that you did not understand. Without the proper factual information on this and without the correct knowledge of why and how this happens, the learner will struggle. Without knowing what remedies to apply, the learner will give up.

When you study, you are investing time and energy. In this case, money too. If you want to discover more about how you learn, what your barriers to study are and how to understand more, you will benefit from being an independent learner. That will repay your investment.

I was brought up in Cardiff and my claim to fame is attending the same school as Gareth Bale and Sam Warburton. I'm a Christian, married to Jifelane - the most wonderful woman in the world. She's from Mindanao in the Philippines and we met online! I'm a proud dad to two beautiful children, Isaac and Hannah. My professional experience is rooted in the breadth and depth of a teaching adventure which spans over twenty five years. Teaching mostly across Key Stage 2 (but also including KS1), it is entwined with close collaboration with colleagues from Reception through to Y6. I am keenly aware of the learning journey through the Primary School. Most of my teaching career has been in England and I have taught in a diverse range of schools. As Head of the English department at L.O.G.S I successfully improved upon the high pass rates at both GCSE and A-level. Leading a team of English teachers through the changes in the exam system (from grades to the current numbering system) meant I devised imaginative schemes of work and crucial time-saving teaching techniques which ensured examination success. Last year my English department had "excellent" results whilst nationally grades dropped. I am a hardworking, enthusiastic mother of a 3 year old boy. I am a Primary School Teacher and have worked with many children in variety of settings and roles. I then took a year out of work to undertake my PGCE to become a Qualified Primary School Teacher. My last role was for nearly 2 years but unfortunately my role was made redundant because the parents are now working from home and they no longer needed the level of support they needed before COVID. I have 15 years of experience in teaching. For the first 10 years of my career, I taught in Special Education and gained a wealth of experience teaching many wonderful children with special educational needs, including Autism, Down's syndrome, ADHD, Asperger Syndrome and other learning and physical disabilities. Tutoring Approach:
I believe that learning should be fun and not a burden! My main focus when teaching is to ensure the child is engaged, active and interested. I'm a hardworking, patient individual looking to improve the skills and confidence of my students by increasing their understanding rather than just telling them what is needed to complete their tasks.

I take a lot of time to plan individual lessons and strive to tailor each of them to the child's specific requirements. Every child is different so every lesson will be different. I am teaching French and German I will start off using speech methods, so that the student feels relaxed and able to learn. This is very important. Depending on how we go we can then progress to pens and paper. Learning at this level ought to be enjoyable. I also teach adults at this level. I seek to build confidence in students, so that they can encounter native speakers and be able to do simple tasks like ordering meal in a cafe and an item of clothing in a shop. I have GCSE French and A level German.

Teaching Experience:
I have dyslexia, so I am sensitive to those who have this condition. I go at a slow pace to make sure the knowledge is consolidated before we move on. There is no hurry in learning either of these languages. Better to learn solidly and slowly
than poorly and in a rush. I teach in short sessions as these are most beneficial. There is homework if students want it. I am DBS cleared.

Tutoring Approach:
I am patient and empathetic and these are vital qualities in a teacher. I have travelled frequently to France in recent years, chiefly to Burgundy and also to Paris. I have a also been to Germany --I know Konstanz quite well and have been to Berlin.
Part of learning a language is learning more about the culture of these countries. I hope the students will be able to do this.
