Personal Description:
It is a number of years since I even considered updating my profile. In the last few months I have been asked out by the wife of a very close friend if I would tutor her nephew. I have also been approached by a Russian educational agency to tutor two Russian students.
I must confess I have really enjoyed. So I am updating my profile and offering my services.
I am a retired Deputy Headteacher.Even though I have held senior management roles in schools for 20 years Headteacher's have always wanted me to continue teaching Economics.

Prior to entering the profession I worked as a foreign currency dealer in the City. Whilst it paid very well my second favourite job was the stint I had as milkman. I also spent a summer season employed as a doorman at a disco in a Spanish resort.

My route to becoming a teacher was 'indirect' but I believe the experience I gained outside education proved invaluable in influencing my approach to teaching and the way I relate to students.

I am fanatical Liverpool supporter and since retirement have become a golfer.

Teaching Experience:
I taught Economics at A level and GCSE for 30 years in state comprehensive schools in London and Berkshire.
More recently, and after retirement:
I prepared a 6th form class at Battle Abbey School
for their level A Economics

In all my posts GCSE classes I taught have achieved achieved 70% Level 5 or above.

At A level, classes I taught rarely included any fail results and on average my classes achieved 70% A*-B grades. Even in my last year of teaching a class of 21 A level students secured 86% A*-B grades.

I am very familiar with AQA and Edexcel Syllabi and the IB Economics course. I was an examiner for both Edexcel and AQA.

I also have been involved in preparing students for Oxbridge. In all, I helped successfully prepare 19 students for interviews at Oxford(to read PPE) and Cambridge(to read Economics).

Upon retiring I had thought my days in the classroom had ended. The fact experienced and trained A level Economics teachers are a very rare breed has led to offers, two of which I found difficult to turn down. I was contacted through UK tutors by Battle Abbey School. They wanted an A level economics teacher to prepare a class for 2/3 of the A level course in 18 weeks! We achieved it with most students securing grades above those predicted.

In Sept 2019 I provided additional Learning for an A level student. The parents were Governors at Gildredge House School. After a few months they asked if I would consider becoming Head of Economics at Gildredge House and introduce GCSE Economics as well as teaching the A level. I did not want such a commitment but would be prepared to teach the Yr12 and Yr13 A level groups.

The Yr13 group had received very little grounding in Yr12 and had not developed the disciplined attitude towards learning. It took time for most of them to trust I knew what I was doing and act upon guidance and advice. Then Covid came! Nevertheless, most students secured results at least two grades higher than those I had predicted for them in Nov 19.

I was asked if I would extend my one year contract as no appropriately qualified and experienced replacement could be found. I am currently teaching Yr13 and Yr12 groups three mornings a week and enjoying it!!
The extension lasted 4 years!

And now I am tutoring again and lovint it.

Tutoring Approach:
When first meeting students who have never studied Economics I inform them they do have an understanding of the subject because it affects all aspects of their everyday lives. Wherever possible I will relate economic theories and principles to those real life experiences.

Indeed there are two general approches to teaching the subject:

1. Learn the theories and then apply to real life.
2. Introduce the theories through real life situations.

I adopt the latter approach.

Regarding my approach to student learning in general: wherever possibleI encourage and guide students to think and learn for themselves as it builds self confidence.

My overall approach is to encourage students to enjoy their learning. The subject is difficult requiring a lot of hard work. If students enjoy their learning the studying is easier

Tutoring on a one to one basis requires a flexible approach. The attitude, learning style and ability of a student should influence the style of tutoring.

Finally, I value a learning relationship with honesty on both sides. If a students is unable to complete a task by the agreed deadline I would rather they just tell me rather than devise a convincing excuse. On occasions we all face unexpected circumstances which can derail plans.

This overall approach seemed to receive a positive reaction from students as the subject nearly always attracted largish numbers at A level.

I have spent many years accumulating a wide range of academic qualifications, and my work has often primarily consisted of passing on my knowledge to others in a form they can understand. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people to understand something they thought was beyond them. By virtue of having studied several subjects at a high level, I empathise with the feeling of finding something difficult, and have the patience and technique to get past this. I am not a single-subject specialist who might find it difficult to understand why others struggle in their area of expertise.
For students who are preparing for exams, my knowledge of examination technique, and an empathy with the marker, should be invaluable. I always keep in mind the importance of the student's goals, but never take myself too seriously.

My whole career has been geared towards some form of teaching. I have trained groups of adults and children, as well as individuals, in elements of mathematics, psychology, actuarial science, pensions, and even tennis! I have tutored both of my children through IGCSEs, GCSEs, and A-levels (one was home-schooled, the other attended a local comprehensive and 6th Form College). I look at what is important for the student. I emphasise clear, logical ways of working, and clear presentation. I make sure that they realise that they not only need to understand why they are doing something, but they must also be able to explain it clearly. Explaining a difficult concept to someone else can often be the best way to make yourself remember it. I am calm and patient, and English is my first language, all of which can help when a student finds something tricky.

I have been teaching for the past eight years and am currently Head of Law and a teacher of Economics at a secondary school rated as outstanding by OFSTED. Previous to teaching I graduated in 2006 from Loughborough University with a BSc Hons degree in Banking, Finance and Management, I then worked for three years as a trainee quantity surveyor on a civil engineering project at the Olympic site in Stratford before training to become a teacher. I have a background in senior industrial and commercial management, both in the UK and overseas; also senior experience in the public sector (local government and NHS). I took time out in my thirties to gain my PGCE.

Teaching Experience:
I have never taught full-time (although I was once up to around two-thirds of a full timetable). I have worked in further education colleges and as a supply-teacher, mostly in secondary. In addition, I have long experience as a governor of my old private-sector school, so understand very well the requirements for successful 11+ and 13+ entrance. Prior to this I was a student studying Economics at the University of Birmingham, where I achieved a first level BSc. Hello, I am a UK qualified teacher and have had a very interesting career in the UK and overseas. I lived in Australia for 2 years where I gained an MBA. I worked in the Middle East for 5 years. For the past few years, I have been an on-line tutor for a Paris school, a Budapest school and many private A level, IB and undergraduate students.

I taught business related subjects in the Middle East in the training department of a multi-national oil company. Prior to this I worked in schools and colleges in Wales and England.

Tutoring Approach:
At our first meeting, I will assess your strengths and weaknesses so that I can draw up an individual learning plan for you. The first 15 minutes are free.

I find that most students are capable of learning the content of the GCSE or A level syllabus, can remember the main concepts, but struggle to write a coherent A grade essay. If this is your weakness, then I will focus on developing your essay writing skills and I have lots of resources which I use to do this.
I understand that some of the economics and business concepts can be quite complex and some of the diagrams challenging, so I will be very patient with you and will make sure you fully understand every topic in the syllabus. I will stretch and challenge you to make sure that you stay at the top of your game and I will use materials appropriate to your ability.

My main objective is to help students gain confidence and instil in them a 'can do' attitude. This is something that I believe I am good at. I get great job satisfaction when I see my students develop self-confidence and reach their full potential. I have been teaching Economics and Business for over 16 years as Head of Economics and Business in three high performing independent schools. This followed 19 years working in commercial roles in the fast moving consumer goods industry, after which I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Business Education) at the University of Roehampton in London.
I am taking early retirement at the end of 25-26 academic year so I will be a full time tutor available whenever I am not on holiday!

Firstly, I'll set up a folder on google drive which is shared with the parent to allow them to track the progress of their child.

Within this folder, parents will find detailed updates including what has been completed in each lesson, homework assignments set, and the marks received. Additionally, there is a syllabus checklist available which tracks the topics covered and indicates the student's confidence in each area. This comprehensive approach ensures that parents are always up-to-date and can actively engage in their child's academic progress.

Every session will be tailored to the students needs and taught in a way that suits their learning style. I build strong bonds with the students that allow them to feel comfortable and ask any question that they have.

I guide my students towards obtaining correct answers with a series of well-placed questions rather than providing them with information to 'rote learn'.

As someone who has recently experienced what it is like doing the new style of GCSE`s and A-Levels, I understand and recognise what works best in order for students to excel beyond what they think might be their limits. Having achieved 9 A*`s at GCSE(6 "9`s" for GCSE and 3 "A*`s for IGCSE) and A*A*A*A at A-Level recently, I understand what approach works best in order for a student to excel and what the exam boards are looking for so that the pupil can achieve the best grades. I am able to teach a wide variety of exam boards.

My students feel that it is very easy to connect with how I teach and are not afraid to ask questions or approach my teaching in a fun and informal manner.
