I have been tutoring students across London in all aspects of Computing since 2015. Having a PhD and a 1st Class Degree in Computer Science from Sheffield University, I have a great deal of experience in everything from general programming to academic research. I worked for a decade as an academic at both Sheffield and Surrey Universities. I have helped many students through their studies at GCSE and A-level, teaching AQA, OCR and CIE syllabuses. I am also happy to teach adult learners who are looking to expand their skillset.

For A-level and GCSE students it is worth beginning tuition as soon as possible, not just in the weeks running up to exams (although this can still help). This is particularly important for Computer Science because students should be learning a programming language in parallel with their studies. Some exam boards require a programming project as coursework, and it is important that this is completed as soon as possible to leave room for exam preparation.

I am happy to help degree students with theory and learning programming, but enquiries asking for help with an assignment for hand in next week are unlikely to be followed up.

I started working as a tutor in London and Surrey in 2013/2014, mainly for students who had been excluded from school. In 2015 I relocated and began tutoring private clients in East Anglia. In 2016 I started offering online tuition, first using Skype, and now with Zoom. Typically, I elicit learning from my students by finding areas of the topic they find difficult, lack confidence and find challenging. Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is to ensure students understand the areas of learning they are struggling with and build on that to ensure confidence in all areas of the course. I challenge pupils on what they already know to ensure it is correctly reinforced and their confidence grows. I tutor using reciprocal learning, where students are able to independently learn a topic and then have a tutorial style lesson where they reinforce that learning. Tutoring styles are always adapted to the needs of the learner which is very quickly established.

Hi, I'm Tom. I'm 25 and have been a professional software developer for 2 years, having finished my undergraduate degree in physics and computer science at Edinburgh in 2023. Since then I've been working full time and have just finished a masters level apprenticeship alongside my work. I used to do tutoring before and at the beginning of uni and really enjoyed it so am looking to get back into it! Tutoring Approach:
I've found in the past that the best approach to tutoring is to be very positive and flexible. I have never been a super forceful or strict tutor and think that trying to be too overbearing, particularly in sessions outside of or extra to school like tutoring, just makes people perform worse. I will always try and be positive and make sure sessions are not painful for students (as I remember how much doing homework can be a chore!), but equally make sure students are getting the most out of sessions by asking questions of them to demonstrate their knowledge and checking they're confident with what we've done.
