About Me. I'm now taking on a small number of private students, as my university commitments have settled. I currently lecture at the University of Salford and have over 28 years of teaching experience. I'm a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Visiting Lecturer at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and also teach in São Paulo, Brazil. I am familiar with the syllabi for OCR, AQA, and Edexcel for GCSE, A-level, and degree courses. The first session will include an informal discussion with parents/tutee to gain an understanding of the tutee's requirements and to explain my role and how I can aid learning. The tutee largely dictates the structure of the sessions, including the subjects they wish to focus on and their preferred learning style, which can be discussed during the first session. As the student develops, the structure can be adapted accordingly.

After completing my D.Phil from the University of Oxford, I worked for 7 years as a Senior Biologist for a small drug discovery company where I was responsible for screening new drug targets in tissue models for human disease. Over the years I've had so many comments from students/colleagues about my ability to break subjects down to ease understanding, and coupled with my passion for science and sharing that with others I decided to change career and become a full-time science tutor. I usually start with the current topics that student is studying in the school and explain to the student that topic and related background knowledge. As I teach one to one, my pace is faster than school and we usually finish the topic in one or sometimes two classes. And then we do previous topics and I explain doubts on those topics. I am a Turkish Cypriot and I am quite familiar to the GCSE and A-level curriculum. Apart from my academic background I'd like to address couple more stuff I have in my life. First off I have to state that I love learning and teaching new stuff, and also I believe teaching is the older brother of learning; as you can not say that you have learned something deeply if you are unable to teach it to someone that does not know it; like I play chess and have been the 6th table player of my municipality's chess team. Even though I have attended many many games with that team I was not aware of the fact that thinking simple would actually be a benefit in any game, and I realized this when last year I have aided an association's chess team in stars category as an educator. When working with youngsters that are looking at the game much simpler than you do, you have to match their energy and try to predict what obstacles may get in their way, and I believe this working experience improved me quite a bit in that matter. I have never been a super forceful or strict tutor and think that trying to be too overbearing, particularly in sessions outside of or extra to school like tutoring, just makes people perform worse. I will always try and be positive and make sure sessions are not painful for students (as I remember how much doing homework can be a chore!), but equally make sure students are getting the most out of sessions by asking questions of them to demonstrate their knowledge and checking they're confident with what we've done.
