Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring privately for 20 years and have seen my students grow in confidence, understanding and knowledge of their chosen topics. I saw a girl who I tutored for 7 months go from getting an 'Unclassified grade' in her Biology AS Level to a B in her A2. I have never seen a student of mine's grades stay the same post-tutoring and I am very proud of that.

Tutoring Approach:
I approach tutoring different ways depending on who the student is. I ask them questions about themselves, hobbies, favourite subjects etc; and then using that to better understand how they learn, I talk to them about their private learning and revision and the method of approach to that and to exams. And then I teach them using the method appropriate to their style of learning. I also set plenty of work and get them to do past papers which I send to them in the first week. I then take these away and mark them in my own time and return with a deeper view of where they are going wrong after they have been taught. I do 2hr concentrated sessions either weekly or fornightly and have seen great results not only in grades but also in enthusiasm for learning. I am also on hand to discuss career and university options too, which helps ease the daunting choices the students have to make.

Highly recommend!!! Ellie has genuinely been the best chemistry teacher I have had, she is also an examiner which is a great help as her knowledge is always up to date not only with content but also exam questions and mark schemes. She explains the chemistry in as much detail as you need as opposed to the majority of teachers who focus more on memorisation and wrote learning. So you have a good understanding (which is the best teaching style as exam questions can require a lot of application.) I have a detailed knowledge of all current syllabus for GCSE Sciences, Maths, (as well as Maths and Science IGCSE, Functional Skills, and BTEC), and all current A level Chemistry and Biology syllabus's. I use a combination of theory, exam practice questions, past paper questions, and workbooks in the lessons, to improve pupil confidence with exam technique, and focus on exam skills.

In addition, I adapt my teaching methods to support the pupils learning needs and help to identify areas of study in which they need help to improve. I also look at revision methods and planning revision timetables with pupils to help them find the option which works best for their learning needs.

Whilst science can be a challenging subject for students to grasp, I find it highly rewarding when pupil have the "lightbulb moment" of understanding they are working to master.

Born in Scotland grew up in New Zealand where I went to Otago University, the oldest in NZ and gained a 1st Class BSc (hons) and a PhD in Physiology.

I then had a research career here in the UK mainly working on muscle development. I can be found in Nature doing that.

Besides face to face tutoring,I also do postal tuition.As an honours graduate of the Open University I know this can be effective.I find the initial requirements by telephone then send a worksheet by post.When the student returns this I mark with full comment and send back with a full work out of each question.Some questions are designed by me and some are from previous papers.In my view this method is better than online as there is more time for reflection.I charge just £22 for postal tuition and will tutor students from anywhere in Great Britain or abroad
