Teaching Experience:
Since I have been a student all my life so did not get a chance to tutor. However I have experience to work with young people as a "Tutor" in the state run TRIO program in USA. This job has given me a clear understanding and significance of a good education, promoting effective learning, teaching and personal development. This first hand skill of working with children of school age has made me patient, tolerant and has also given me an ability to respond positively to special educational needs. Having this experience would definitely facilitate me to translate my knowledge better to pupils and that surely would aid them to understand the basic concepts.

Personal Description:
I have a degree in Physics from the University of Nottingham and have taught Science in schools for over 8 years. I have a wide variety of teaching experience, from teaching English as a foreign language to a small group of 6 year olds, to teaching A level Physics in college. I love teaching and especially enjoy seeing students progress, become more confident and gain a real interest and love of the subject.

Teaching Experience:

I have now been tutoring for over 3 years, helping many students to gain the grades they require in their GCSE and A level exams for Science and Maths.

Previously, I spent 7 years living in Thailand where I taught both England (as a foreign language) and Science in an International Program at one of the top government schools. I also taught English, Maths and Science as a tutor, both on a one-to-one basis and to small groups.

I gained a PGCE in Secondary Science from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2009 and worked as a supply teacher in a number of secondary schools in the Cheshire area before becoming a full time tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to encourage a love of the subject and take great joy in seeing students progress and become successful. I try to be friendly and supportive whilst also striving for excellent results. I try to make sessions interesting and informative by personalising the work to centre around the interests and needs of the individual student and by making use of ICT resources.

Personal Description:
Assistant Principal Examiner and Former Oxford University Admissions Questions Writer. Qualified Teacher with 20 years experience. MChem and QTS.

Chemistry Tuition | GCSE, IGCSE, A level, IB

I am a qualified Chemistry teacher with over 20 years' teaching, tutoring and examining experience. I work with:

I am currently:

Assistant Principal Examiner for Chemistry with direct contribution to mark schemes and examiner standardisation.

Invited contributor to other elite university admissions assessments.

I support students not only in mastering Chemistry content, but in developing the precision, structure and exam judgement required for the highest grades.

I typically work with:

GCSE, IGCSE, IB and A level students

Oxbridge and Medicine applicants

Home-educated and internationally educated students

High-performing students who want examiner-level insight

Students finding Chemistry a challenge and seeking calm and caring support, structure, content delivery and reassurance.

My approach is strategic and individualised. Lessons focus on:

Examiner-style feedback aligned with real mark schemes

High-level exam question analysis

Closing the gap between strong understanding and top performing answers.

Teaching Experience:

Extensive work with high-performing, admissions-focused students

A wealth of experience with students requiring support with challenging Chemistry content.

Former Head of Chemistry and senior pastoral roles within schools

Experience across UK and international curricula including Edexcel, Cambridge International, IB, AQA and OCR

Alongside my classroom and tutoring work, I'm also an Assistant Principal Examiner, which means I have a clear understanding of how exam questions are written and how marks are awarded. I use this insight to help students feel more confident and secure in their approach to exams.

Many of the students I work with are capable but have lost confidence, feel overwhelmed, or need clear, structured explanations at their own pace. I'm calm, patient, and very used to adapting my teaching to suit different learning styles.

My lessons focus on:

building understanding step by step

improving exam technique

developing confidence and independence

I've worked with students from a wide range of schools and backgrounds, and I always aim to create a supportive, positive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions.

Thank you to my wonderful students for writing these kind testimonials:

S
All that I can say is that Ellie is fantastic. When she was teaching myself and my brother A Level Chemistry, she always gave short, concise explanations of concepts in a way that we easily understood. Also, she gave us past paper questions after each topic so that we had plenty of practice at exam technique. She marked these and sent us feedback on what to improve on. This meant that when it came around to do our exams, we were fully prepared for them and confident that we could do well. During lockdown, she was very flexible as she either had online lessons with us or set us exam papers that she marked and sent back to us with details on how to improve. Ellie's tutoring gave us routine Chemistry revision that alleviated pressure and allowed us to balance our time on other A Level subjects. We are very grateful to have had such an amazing tutor who was always cheerful and upbeat. Thank you! -S and S.

T
My daughter needed an A level chemistry tutor. We had other tutors but I would firstly say my daughter was very particular about the type of tutor she wanted . She wanted someone very knowledgeable and someone to help tackle exam questions. My daughter is quite shy and due to her teacher at school had lost confidence. When my daughter had her first lesson with Ellie, she knew she was the right type of tutor. Ellie instantly put my child at ease. Ellie is extremely knowledgeable and knows and knows exactly how to adapt to the style of teaching she required. My child gained confidence and improved greatly. I couldn't recommend Ellie enough. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending her to anyone. She is absolutely brilliant.

A
Ellie is such an amazing tutor and has helped my daughter so much with her A-Level Chemistry. She has a reassuring and supportive approach that immediately puts you at ease and makes each session both educational and enjoyable. She is extremely organized, with well planned sessions, ensuring she sends through any useful material or questions in advance of the session. Her understanding of the curriculum and marking scheme, coupled with her brilliant ability to explain topics in detail and with patience, gave my daughter so much more confidence in going into her A-Levels and I'm sure her results will reflect this. Ellie is by far the best tutor we have ever used and we're so grateful for all her help. I couldn't recommend her more highly.

R
Ellie has been a very caring and helpful chemistry tutor, without her i wouldn't have the grades I have achieved now, and thanks to her help I have improved massively. Ellie has constantly been patient and understanding with me, even when i have found myself overwhelmed with exams or even don't understand something, she has always been very supportive and encouraging to carry on. Ellie has made learning chemistry so much easier to learn and i looked forward to our lessons every week. thank you Ellie! Love R xxxx

C
Ellie has been working with my daughter in GCSE Biology and Chemistry. She is such a great teacher and was able to engage with my daughter in such a way that she felt supported and believed in her own ability. Ellie has great in depth knowledge in the syllabus and armed with focussed exam questions and answers for her students. I would highly recommend Ellie, she is an amazing tutor and a really lovely person.

D
Ellie is an excellent chemistry and biology tutor - she helped two of our children achieve great GCSE grades. She is patient and uses her oustanding knowledge about content and exam technique to explain the most challenging aspects of the sciences in a clear and memorable way. We 100% recommend Ellie as she will bring the best out of any student regardless of their initial grasp of the sciences.

S
I think Ellie is really helpful in all aspects of biology and chemistry. This is because I always understand a topic after Ellie has taught it to me. Also she gives lots of helpful exam practice so I can apply all the knowledge I have been taught so my tests always went well. I always knew the information inside out because Ellie tests me and makes sure I know a certain topic before moving on.

H
Ellie has taught my son for the last four years, through GCSE and A levels and prior to this she tutored my elder son too. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for high quality Chemistry tuition. Ellie is outstanding- her knowledge of the syllabus, teaching styles tailored to individual needs and understanding of the requirements for examination answers as an examiner but more importantly the encouragement and recognition of your child's strength have the greatest impact in building their self belief, especially in the challenges of the last year!

R
Ellie is fully equipped in her lessons such as allowing her students to attempt past paper questions after going through a topic. This gives her students a great opportunity to achieve well in their exams. I would highly recommend.

K
We asked Ellie as she'd already come highly recommend by friends. She has been instrumental in deepening my son's grasp of chemistry A level and undoubtedly made all the difference in his gaining an A grade. Excellent communication with us about his progress and the areas he needed to focus on. Such a lovely lady too, a gem!

S
Ellie is a great tutor! She really went into detail about what the specification covers and thoroughly explained areas I was less confident in. Ellie's also very organised and did plenty of past papers with me. She made revision more enjoyable and helped me improve in my ability to answer exam style questions

M
Absolutely fantastic tutor. Ellie is enthusiastic and explains concepts in a way that my son was able to understand. He went from a D in his first chemistry assessment test for A levels before starting with Ellie,to an A in his next test! His confidence in his abilities grew enormously with her help. Thank you Ellie

L
Ellie has been my gcse and alevel tutor for chemistry and I cannot recommend her more highly. She is patient and explains all elements really clearly and gives you the confidence to believe you can achieve a grade much higher than you originally thought!

A
Ellie has really helped me to understand topics I wasn't not confident in. She is patient and able to explain through notes with illustrations in detail to ensure I built on my knowledge. I would recommend Ellie to any students 5*

A
Given the step up in difficulty of the new linear Aqa A Level chemistry course, I couldn't have been happier with the tutoring and support Ellie gave my son. She is extremely knowledgeable and very organised ensuring all topics are covered, setting sufficient homework and practise papers to reinforce the theories to be learnt. More importantly she is a hugely encouraging and friendly person who made my son feel confident in his own abilities. She goes the extra mile and provides excellent feedback after marking homework or practise papers so my son could see where he went wrong. Messages of support before each exam highlight Ellie's caring side and her desire for her students to do well. Having 2 family bereavements during my sons exams demonstrated the depth of Ellie's teaching allowing him to still achieve his A grade under very upsetting and difficult circumstances. We were so proud he was able to secure his place at university for medicine. So impressed was I with Ellie I recommended her to 3 other parents. I know those students achieved an A grade and 2 A* grades respectively. Ellie is an amazing tutor who really does deliver results. I cannot recommend her highly enough!!

M
My twins have just taken their GCSE chemistry. They were tutored by Ellie who reinforced the difficult concepts now covered by the new GCSE syllabus. Throughout Ellie has been patient, approachable and friendly and is excellent at explaining, she also went through a lot of exam papers which boosted their confidence. Both want to take A level chemistry and have asked if Ellie can can continue as their tutor which I feel is the best recommendation someone can get.

A
Ellie has tutored my daughter for the last two years. My daughter went from being worried about studying A-level Chemistry to being confident and achieving great results; through Ellie's caring nature, in depth knowledge, and hard work. She is a fantastic tutor and I highly recommend her.

Y
Ellie has been amazing at teaching chemistry, she has helped me understand concepts which I couldn't acquire from school. She is so good at explaining and teaching all the correct exam techniques which have been so helpful in the exam.

M
Ellie was an amazing tutor she really gave me confidence and helped me achieve the grade I wanted, which was a B. I couldn't have done it without her help. She was happy to help with any questions even outside of the lesson and made me enjoy chemistry. Thanks Ellie x

A
Highly recommend!!! Ellie has genuinely been the best chemistry teacher I have had, she is also an examiner which is a great help as her knowledge is always up to date not only with content but also exam questions and mark schemes. She explains the chemistry in as much detail as you need as opposed to the majority of teachers who focus more on memorisation and wrote learning. So you have a good understanding (which is the best teaching style as exam questions can require a lot of application.) Ellie is also extremely kind and understanding, she has offered so much support from a mental health perspective. She truly goes above and beyond for her students :)

S
Ellie has been fantastic. She's inspired Sam with confidence and clear understanding. Thanks for everything

J
Ellie is both an experienced and knowledgeable tutor and a really lovely person. She has been helping my family this year with GCSE and A level exam preparation after all the school Covid disruption. Both children have found their 1:1 lessons with Ellie really beneficial - they have learnt so much and have really grown in confidence. We are very glad to have found you Ellie, thank you

R
Ellie has given Maanvi the confidence in A Level chemistry, and has encouraged Maanvi to work hard and do well in this subject. Ellie had given maanvi additional help via her topic questions booklet ensuring that Maanvi is able to understand the topics thoroughly, and she has enjoyed the subject overall alot due to her extra lessons with Ellie. I am very grateful to Ellie for all her hard work and help for the last two years. Radhika

K
Ellie is a wonderful Chemistry tutor and has always gone above and beyond to help me. I appreciate how she is able to make Chemistry simple and easy to understand. Ellie is a very positive and lovely person, well organised and is always prepared to help me in whatever way I need so I definitely recommend Ellie as a Chemistry tutor.
Ellie has been tutoring my children for the last 7 years. My children admired the way she taught, they really enjoyed her lessons and the results they achieved in the end would not have been possible without Ellie. I highly recommend Ellie for anyone who is struggling with Biology or Chemistry or needs help with exam technique. Thank you very much Ellie for all your support over the years, you are the best tutor I have ever worked with.

Ellie really helps you understand the course content and answers all the questions you have. She provides you with so much help in the way of past papers and detailed specifications. Ellie is also really good when it comes to fitting more lessons in near exam time. This was really helpful and she was very reassuring for my exams. A

After a rough year 12 we sought Chemistry tuition. After one lesson with Ellie it is lovely to see the glimpse of positivity back in our son. A

Ellie could always find a way to explain so that the topic could be understood and easy to grasp. And she was always able to answer my questions (and I had a lot of questions!) A

I really can't recommend Ellie highly enough - she has transformed Y10 GCSE Core Science for our 15 year old son. Luckily for us, Ellie is available to tutor our son through Y11, too, and we are so relieved about this and he is very happy, too. Thanks Ellie. J

Ellie is a very professional tutor whose lessons bring the learning experience outside the classroom, tailored to her students' needs. She is an amazing teacher with great empathy and patience for her students. Her unique and innovative teaching methods have tremendously helped our daughter achieve exceptional results in her mocks. Ellie has no doubt proven to be a vital resource to our daughter's GCSE Chemistry. We're so glad to have found her. N

Ellie has been absolutely invaluable to my daughters GCSE Chemistry and in Lucy's words "It was like someone had switched the light on". Now instead of being scared of Chemistry she wants to do it at A Level as she knows with Ellie by her side she can achieve the results she needs. I actually wish Ellie did more subjects and we'd have her for so much more! I doubt I could give higher praise for a tutor! A

Thank you for all your wonderful reviews, they mean the world to me 😊

I have also worked for the Bedfordshire medical needs office teaching children who are out of school for medical reasons and have worked as a private tutor for the past decade helping students on an 1:1 basis to improve their exam grades and get into their chosen sixth form or college.

Tutoring Approach:

My tuition is aimed at improving the student's understanding of underlying concepts, identifying misconceptions or areas of confusion and correcting them, with the effect of improving exam technique and grades. I will begin by discussing the desired outcomes for tuition with the student and parents and then use my expertise and experience to assess the relevant topics and develop a suitable action plan. My students typically receive top grades in their exams.
I have experience of working with students with additional needs and various learning styles and can tailor my approach to suit the needs of the individual learner.

Personal Description:
Hi, I'm Ope, an experienced online Chemistry tutor who is also a Masters graduate (MSc in Green Chemistry) from the University of York BSc Chemistry with Biochemistry from Queen Mary University of London (both Russell Group universities).

I am aware that many students study with the concept of the sciences, especially Chemistry and Physics. The pressure can be daunting for a teen and I want to be able to make people `see` in a scientific way, be able to bring understanding so that they can take on any examination and achieve the grades they desire.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring professionally since 2010 and have helped various students boost their confidence and achieve their goals. My students have come from all backgrounds and have ranged from Year 6 to 13. Most of my students have been studying for GCSEs, A-Level or IB

From my experience as a professional tutor, I have taught in several families with a majority of people seeking long term tuition.
I understand that students learn in various ways, so I try to structure my tutorials to suit individual needs. Generally however, I strive for a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and sometimes take an informal approach towards learning especially where the tougher concepts are concerned. I am always professional!

I implore hands-on techniques (where possible) and encourage participation and thought-provoking discussion. I encourage my students to ask "why?" While I work closely with mark schemes to ensure that students become familiar with exam technique, my goal is to help them become thinkers and not crammers, so they can apply their knowledge to any scenario. I encourage personal study and revision outside of the sessions and will often give tips about how to maximise the time outside of the sessions after studying a bit more about your learning style.

I use regular feedback mechanisms which can include tests or assignments (from multiple choice questions to essay-type exam-style questions) to assess understanding and progress. There will always be questions at the end of a session in some form to check understanding.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been tutoring online since 2016 and do my tutoring using a virtual online classroom equipped with chat function, document/picture upload, graph function, math/science symbols etc and can be edited in real time - writing, typing, drawing.

We can upload past papers, do interactive quizzes, watch YouTube videos and much more.

My sessions are completely interactive. I have a whiteboard on which we can both upload documents, make notes, drawings, etc. You can also save parts of the board or all of it at the end of the session. We would use Zoom for audiovisuals.

I typically work with exam style questions after a short session of teaching/revision, but I can focus more one way depending on your needs. I usually leave a short bit of work to be done as assignment based on what we`ve done in the session which you can do at any time on the board after the session. We`ll also do a little recap at the start of a new session.

NB
There is a one-off admin cost due to UKtutors which is collected alongside payment for the first paid lesson. This amount depends on the number of hours requested and my hourly rate - this will be added to the fee for the first session. More information is available on the About Us page Thanks.

Personal Description:
Hi I'm Meghavi and I am a BSc Physics graduate from Imperial College London and I have a QTS (Qualified Teaching Status) at grade 1 - Outstanding. Currently, I work as a Consultant in the Digital Transformation space. I have always been interested in teaching, from my GCSE years, I began helping my friends with their school work. Moving to A level years I started helping out some of the teachers in my school to run after school sessions to help kids with their Homework. I would say I am very patient and will sit there till the concept is clear in their minds. I am not the kind of person who gives up easily so I will do what it takes to make sure an idea or concept is understood. As a person I am very friendly and bubbly. I like to have a good laugh and I'm a good listener.

As far as personal interests go; I love to travel, I love music, movies and Food. I enjoy cooking. I like trying out new things and exploring new places and meeting new people.

Teaching Experience:

My interest in teaching began when I started helping my sister with her school work. I started teaching in 2009. I worked at Kumon (one of UK's largest supplementary education provider) for a year. I then started tutoring AS Students for AS Physics at Lampton School which involved spending my free lessons and after school sessions to help them with any conceptual problems, homework, exam practice or just a recap of any topic in AS Physics. These students felt comfortable coming up to me at any time during or after school to ask any queries they had about the subject. (References Available)

I have helped out in Maths classes and planned my own lessons under the supervision of my teacher. I have also worked as a learning mentor at Lampton School and helped students with any homework or classwork in various subjects.

More recently (2013 - 2014) I have been a tutor for various students; teaching A Level Physics, A Level Maths and Further Maths, GCSE Maths, Primary Maths and GCSE Science (Biology Chemistry and Physics all inc).

Tutoring Approach:

Clearly each student is different, and so the way of teaching each one will be different. However I believe that if the foundation is strong nothing can go wrong. I will first try to ensure that the concept and the base of the subject is strong before we go on to a number of past paper questions and exercises. I believe that the best way to learn is to see how any problem can be tackled, go through the thought process and then apply what you know to the specific problem and solve it.

I will first see what the student finds most difficult and what their weaknesses are and then strive to overcome them. Each student will have their own learning methods, some may learn by understanding the whole concept then going into the exam questions, some want to go through exam questions while they are learning the concept to see how the theory can be applied to the problems. Some may learn visually with experiments or examples whereas others will learn through trial and improvement of their own. I will spend the first session finding out how they like to learn and design a program just right for that individual student.

From previous experiences I believe the key areas students need help in are:
- learning the foundation of the subject
- how to manage time in exams
- how to structure their answers in an exam
- lots and lots of practice
Hopefully once we start tutoring, the students will feel much more confident with the subject and the key to success for any exam is self confidence. I will always be their as a guide, a mentor, a friend to help them through what they find difficult.

Personal Description:
Hello! I`m Simon. I hold a PhD in structural biophysics/biochemistry, plus I have an honours degree in biochemistry and a masters in clinical chemistry. I also have eighteen years of experience working in clinical biochemistry laboratories within the NHS. This encompassed various roles and duties, including producing analytical results to help diagnose and manage patients, troubleshooting and problem-solving, discussion of patients with clinical staff, management and supervision of laboratory staff and research and development work. More recently, I also have considerable research experience, both in pure research and from working within the pharmaceutical industry.

I have over ten years of experience working as a self-employed tutor in the sciences and maths. I have a demonstrable track record of inspiring my students in the subjects I tutor, consistently helping them to much better understand these subjects and achieve or exceed their hopes and expectations. I have numerous happy clients who would testify to this.

My approach is understanding students and establishing a rapport with students, which I tend to do quite easily. Obviously, different students have different abilities, personalities, strengths and weaknesses. Therefore I offer a bespoke service and tutorials are carried out in a relaxed atmosphere, where I will involve students in the session rather than just talking at them, giving friendly encouragement throughout. I also make extensive and effective use of various illustrative material and exercises (including past and mock exam papers, for those preparing for upcoming exams).

I LOVE tutoring, both because of some of the lovely people I meet along the way, and due to the fact that I make a difference.

Teaching Experience:

I now have over ten years' experience as a self-employed tutor, during which time I have tutored many students and guided them towards achieving their aspirations and often, exceeding their academic expectations.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE:

During my clinical laboratory career, I was frequently involved in supervising, teaching and training staff from various backgrounds, from school placement through to graduate.

As a PhD student, I was involved in a considerable amount of teaching, tutoring and mentoring activity:-
- I taught undergraduates in laboratory-based practical classes.
- I supervised and tutored my supervisor`s final year honours student. She graduated with a first.
- During a fourteen month period of secondment to an academic institution in the USA, I was heavily involved in designing research projects for, supervising, teaching and assessing undergraduates within the research laboratory environment.
- Acting in a consultative, mentoring and teaching capacity for my guest American supervisor`s research group, especially when he was not around.
- I have presented science and research work in various forums, from informal seminars to international conferences, including a prize-winning lecture I delivered in the USA.

Tutoring Approach:

I appreciate that everybody has different expectations and needs, and these always have to be taken into consideration when deciding how best to tutor somebody. Initially, I would seek to find out your strengths and weaknesses and use those to tailor my tutoring to your requirements.

One's ability to learn and understand a subject are inextricably linked to one's interest in it. The classroom nature of school or college education can understandably make it unsuited to students who are struggling with a subject. Similarly, it can lead to the potential of strong students of a subject not being fully recognised and nurtured. In both cases, this can lead to dejection, frustration and disinterest. As a one-to-one tutor, I work very hard to inspire my tutees and make the learning process as enjoyable as possible. I see it as being much more of a coaching role than students might receive within a school class, and seek to bring the subjects I teach to life, drawing on life examples and anecdotal approaches to make even the most abstract of concepts relevant and fascinating. I always try to ensure that tutoring sessions are conducted in a relaxed and friendly way, as students feeling comfortable with their learning environment is important for sessions to be fully effective and useful.

For the interested learner who is not attending a course of study but wants to learn about "science" and all it's wonderful facets, I would be happy to provide a more independently-structured course, that is tailored to your interests and requirements.

Personal Description:
I am an experienced and enthusiastic tutor with a passion for learning. I have over 8 years experience as a maths and science tutor. I studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University and subsequently completed an MSc in the History and Philosophy of Science at the London School of Economics. I am fascinated by the natural world and by scientific enquiry. When I'm not teaching or learning I enjoy foreign cinema, playing squash and strumming the guitar.

Teaching Experience:

After completing my undergraduate degree, I worked as a full-time teacher at d'Overbroeck's Sixth Form College, Oxford. During this four-year period, I taught A-level Philosophy, Sociology and Religious Studies (all AQA examining board). More recently, I have worked as a teaching assistant at Canterbury High School, focussing on struggling students and helping them achieve their potential. Concurrently, I have also worked as a private tutor teaching GCSE and A-level Maths, GCSE Chemistry and Physics as well as providing 11+ Maths preparation.

Tutoring Approach:

Once I understand exactly what a tutee hopes to achieve (e.g. A* Maths GCSE, or simply understanding algebra) I have three main priorities as a tutor:

i) to identify a students strengths and weaknesses through short tests

ii) to provide a course of study and assessment that will focus on the weaknesses and monitor progress

iii) to give the student belief in themselves and their abilities and to instill a love of learning!

I have cisco webex software, zoom and skype, and am also DBS cleared

I am a highly experienced, enthusiastic and very versatile optical engineering senior lecturer/researcher, who gained a PhD from the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, City University, London, UK in "Fibre optical temperature and strain sensors using fluorescent techniques" for measurement applications using the fluorescence generated from rare earth-doped optical fibres (e.g. Er3+, Yb3+, Tm3+ etc.). I also possess very good experience and knowledge of industry, with excellent complimentary skills gained from higher education - in particular industrial measurement, forensic analysis, quality control and statistical analysis. A BSc first degree in forensic science is combined with a further specialist MSc in engineering metrology and topped with a PhD in photonics - making for good, broad-based, multi-disciplined measurement science and analytical capabilities right across the scientific spectrum. I have a proven high degree of personal motivation, and am capable of working on my own initiative or equally as part of an effective team. In addition, I am able to communicate very well at all levels of hierarchy, with excellent skills developed in scientific report writing (journal papers, periodicals, book chapters etc.) and oral presentation (conferences, lecturing etc). I have over 50 publications to date in my field: 20 journal papers, 22 conference papers, 2 articles, 4 book chapters and other major works.

PhD thesis title:

"Fibre optic sensors based on fluorescence lifetime techniques for temperature and strain measurement"

Thesis submitted for examination for the degree of
Doctor of Philosophy
at
City University
School of Engineering

November 2002

Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

Personal Description:
I have been a teacher for many years having received my PGCE in 1992. Since that time I have worked in a variety of schools in the state and private sectors both in London and Oxfordshire. Teaching physics is a great privilege and pleasure having taught A Level physics for both OCR and Edexcel boards as well as GCSE and iGCSE physics and chemistry. I am currently in the process of creating an A-level OCR physics course for an Oxfordshire school which is both challenging and hugely rewarding as I know it will be used for the A-level students for years to come.

Here are a few testimonials of previous tuition:

From Martin 5/5: (A-Level Physics) Excellent!

We cannot praise Kevin enough. He has the rare combination of knowing his subject very thoroughly and able to communicate that knowledge in a way that immediately makes sense to the pupil. Plus he is clearly very enthusiastic about the subject and teaching others. Very inspirational.

Time keeping perfect. General manor, friendly and enthusiastic. You just know your child is going to enjoy the lesson and progress.

I have no doubt that our daughter will have improved her exam grades by at least a grade. Also her general interest and enthusiasm for the subject has improved.

Simon: 5/5 Our son is enjoying the sessions very much, Kevin has reinvigorated our son's enthusiasm for Physics and perfectly meets the mix of needs now; subject knowledge, teaching style, enthusiasm and targetted exam technique… brilliant!

Natasha: 5/5 Kevin tutored my son for maths and physics. He made the lessons interesting and fun and really helped him with the revision process. He was always prompt and cheerful. All in all, an inspiring teacher.

Siyu: 5/5 It's very useful for the exam. Thank you so much!.

Teaching Experience:

See below for my roles in different teaching posts in UK state and private schools:

Head of Physics: Plan, create and teach a new programme of study for the new A level OCR physics course. Management of A -Level practical assessment and teach :A-level (OCR course)

Physics Teacher: A-Level physics (Edexcel), iGCSE physics teaching (Edexcel) . Organise and supervise rowing outings, ergo and running training for rowing crews.

Physics Teacher: Responsible for co-ordination of IT over the three science departments. A-Level physics, GCSE physics and GCSE chemistry teaching. Design and upkeep of the physics department web site. Organise and supervise ergo and running training for J14 octuple crews as well train crews on the tide way twice a week (including Saturdays). Elected member of the staff committee negotiating the new salary scale commencing September 2001. NUT school representative.

Head of science: Implement changes post OFSTED inspection. Key Stage 4 co-ordination of the examination
schedule with departments and administration of internal and external examinations. Writing of all internal mock examinations. Implemented changes to KS4 course based on EDEXCEL science syllabus changes. Oversaw science course work moderation based on INSET each year concerning moderation techniques and course work marking. INSET training in the managing of a science department. Responsible for the setting of all year 10 and 11 science groups. Created and hosted IT training courses for science staff. Responsible for implementation of IT themes within the science programme of study from year 7 - 11. Class room and form room management.

First teaching post after P.G.C.E. qualification. Responsible for year 7-11 science groups. Worked with the head of department on GCSE practical work. Created new practical work for assessment. Taught top and bottom GCSE science groups with physics as a specialism. Participated in after school clubs including The America Club ( letter writing to pen pals), and The Music Society ( encouraging pupils to play musical instruments ).

Physics Teacher: During the Easter holidays I taught revision courses in A level physics and instructed candidates on good revision techniques. During the summer I worked for the administration department as a clerical officer as well as overseeing their ' social monitoring ' programme for the foreign language students.

Tutoring Approach:

I would use my experience in teaching to understand the specific problems the tutee has with the subject material and then work with them with appropriate materials and resources to overcome the areas of concern.

My experiences in schools range from organizing trips for science based activities and interests, accompanying pupils skiing as well as the world famous Magdalene College School choir to Europe and coaching rowing in London and Oxford schools for competitive events in London and Henley. I would use my experience with students to help develop a good working relationship.

Personal Description:
Greetings! I'm a dedicated and passionate Computer Science student at King's College London, with a drive to make learning an engaging and empowering experience for all my students. My journey has been one of continuous growth, from helping classmates with homework to mentoring students and even my own siblings. These experiences have not only honed my academic skills but also deepened my understanding of the challenges students face. My commitment to learning goes beyond academics; I'm an avid problem solver and believe in fostering creativity and critical thinking. Outside of the academic realm, I enjoy exploring the intersections of technology, art, and society, which often provides unique insights that I love to share with my students.

Teaching Experience:

My journey as an educator has been shaped by diverse experiences. I've tutored primary school students, assisting them in grasping fundamental concepts through interactive and relatable methods. With high school students, including A-level candidates, I've delved into the complexities of Computer Science, Maths, Physics, and Chemistry making abstract ideas tangible through real-world examples. Beyond technical skills, I've been a mentor, helping students build study strategies, time-management skills, and self-confidence. My approach involves creating a comfortable environment where questions are welcomed, mistakes are seen as stepping stones, and learning is tailored to individual needs. Through various roles, I've realized that education is not just about information transfer, but about inspiring a hunger for knowledge that extends beyond the classroom.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring approach can be summed up in three words: Engage, Empower, Elevate. I firmly believe that engagement is the cornerstone of effective learning. I strive to make even the most abstract concepts relatable by drawing parallels to everyday experiences. This fosters curiosity and a desire to explore further. Empowerment comes from creating a safe space for students to voice their questions and ideas without hesitation. Together, we tackle challenges, building not only subject mastery but also self-assurance. Lastly, elevation entails guiding students to see beyond the immediate coursework, encouraging them to think critically and relate their learning to broader contexts. Through a balance of guidance and autonomy, I aim to equip my students with skills that extend well beyond exams-skills that will serve them throughout their academic and personal journeys.

Personal Description:
MPhys (Integrated Masters) Physics and Astrophysics graduate at the University of Leicester. Currently working as a Systems Engineer at Thales, I enjoy teaching fundamental science and mathematics and spreading awareness of STEM.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a private and with different organisations as a tutor for the past 8 years teaching Physics and Maths at different levels to various age groups.
I have also held my work as a summer school physics teacher, overviewing the basics of physics to students looking to study further. Additionally, I have also been in an internship at the Abingdon School, Oxford, teaching GCSE and A level Physics and Maths, obtaining vital teaching school to students at different levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I approach teaching through storytelling rather than compound teaching. Firstly understanding the level of the student, and the background knowledge they have within the subject.
I then generate a plan according to what they know and teach them utilising different facts and a lot of problem-solving.
Having a good insight into what the student lack, and understanding why they lack the skills allows me to generate a targeted lesson, and help them understand and enjoy learning Physics & Maths.

Personal Description:
Dr. Catherine is a dedicated scientist and educator whose career spans advanced academic research, science education, and personal tutoring. With a deep-rooted passion for physics and its applications, she has combined her expertise in experimental and applied science with her vocation to inspire the next generation of learners.

Born with an early curiosity for the natural world, Catherine pursued her studies in physics with determination. She earned her B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Physics from Wroclaw University, where she explored the growth of metals on alloy surfaces. Her doctoral research, "Growth of Pb on Ni3Al(111)", reflected her keen ability to investigate materials at the atomic level. She later expanded her academic journey at Warwick University, completing a second Ph.D. in Physics on "Growth and Characterisation of Metal Alloy and Metal Oxide Surfaces." Her work contributed to advancing the understanding of thin-film growth and nanostructures, leading to several publications in respected international journals. Among her noted contributions are studies on ultrathin metal layers, titanium dioxide films, and surface morphology, establishing her reputation as a careful and innovative experimentalist.

After years in research, Catherine transitioned into education, determined to share her scientific knowledge in a way that would have a direct impact on young people. She completed a PGCE with QTS at the University of Winchester, equipping her with the pedagogical foundation to teach science across all secondary school levels.

Beyond her teaching, Catherine remains connected to her research roots. She has authored and co-authored several publications, including contributions to Applied Surface Science and Materials. These works, ranging from the structural determination of metallic surfaces to the optimisation of thin-film growth, illustrate her ongoing identity as both a teacher and a scientist.

What defines Dr. Catherine's career is the balance she has achieved between the rigour of scientific inquiry and the nurturing ethos of education. She has moved fluidly from the laboratory to the classroom, from international research to local communities, always with the purpose of unlocking potential in others. Whether mentoring young learners, supporting those with special educational needs, or contributing to the broader field of physics, Catherine exemplifies a professional life dedicated to knowledge, care, and inspiration.

Teaching Experience:

Her teaching career has since flourished across a range of schools and academies. Catherine has taught in institutions such as Swanmore College, Wildern Academy, and UTC Portsmouth, where she not only delivered the sciences at KS3 and KS4 but also pioneered the development of a new T-Level course. She embraced opportunities beyond the classroom, leading enrichment activities in CAD and crafts, coordinating SilverCrest Awards, and supporting students in employment readiness. At King's Academy Bay House, she brought her expertise in physics and broader sciences to pupils while nurturing Year 10 learners as a tutor. Her dedication extended to specialist teaching, including her time at Mayville High School and SEN Wavern House, demonstrating her adaptability and commitment to inclusive education.

Alongside her teaching roles, Catherine has pursued private tutoring through KEU Consultancy Ltd and Sherpa, where she continues to support learners preparing for examinations such as GCSE, A-level, and 13+ entry exams to prestigious schools including Eton and Westminster College. Her expertise in exam specifications-AQA, OCR, and Edexcel-has enabled her to guide students with precision and clarity.

Her academic and professional journey is complemented by an impressive commitment to continuous development. Catherine has undertaken extensive training in safeguarding, health and safety, emergency aid, radicalisation awareness, and supporting vulnerable learners. These certifications reflect her holistic approach to education, where student wellbeing is valued alongside academic achievement.

Tutoring Approach:

For Dr. Catherine, tutoring is more than delivering subject knowledge-it is about unlocking each learner's potential by understanding how they learn best. Her approach to tutoring is informed by recent advances in educational psychology, cognitive science, and pedagogy, all of which emphasise that no two students learn in exactly the same way.

Drawing on research in metacognition, memory, and motivation, Catherine builds her tutoring practice around the principle that effective learning occurs when students are not only taught content but also given the tools to understand their own thinking. She encourages learners to reflect on how they solve problems, identify what strategies work for them, and develop confidence in applying those strategies independently.

Central to her philosophy is individualisation. Every child comes with unique strengths, challenges, and aspirations. Some may thrive on visual explanations, while others learn best through hands-on practice or discussion. Catherine takes the time to assess these differences, adapting her lessons accordingly-whether that means breaking down complex physics principles into manageable steps, linking abstract science to real-world examples, or building scaffolds for students with learning difficulties.

Her approach also aligns with student-centred learning models, which place the child's needs at the core of the educational process. Rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all method, she co-constructs learning pathways with her students, ensuring that goals are clear, achievable, and motivating. Catherine is attentive not only to academic progress but also to emotional and cognitive wellbeing. She understands that resilience, curiosity, and self-belief are as important as exam results in shaping a lifelong learner.

Practical strategies underpin her sessions. She uses spaced repetition to reinforce knowledge over time, retrieval practice to strengthen memory, and dual coding (combining words with visuals) to aid understanding. She applies the latest insights from cognitive load theory to avoid overwhelming students, ensuring that new information is introduced in digestible stages. At the same time, she weaves in opportunities for creativity and inquiry, inviting students to ask their own questions and experiment with new ideas.

Catherine's tutoring style is also deeply relational. She believes that trust and rapport between tutor and student are foundational to success. By creating a supportive and non-judgmental learning environment, she allows students to take risks, embrace mistakes as part of the learning process, and ultimately grow in confidence.

For her, tutoring is not about producing short-term results but about nurturing independent thinkers who will carry their learning skills into future challenges. This philosophy is evident in her work preparing students for key milestones-such as GCSEs, A-levels, and entrance exams for prestigious schools-where she combines rigorous subject knowledge with strategies that empower students to approach exams with resilience and self-assurance.

In every session, Catherine demonstrates that tutoring is not just the transmission of knowledge, but the cultivation of learning itself. By combining cutting-edge research with compassion and adaptability, she ensures that each student is seen, heard, and supported on their unique educational journey.
