Prior to this I was a student studying Economics at the University of Birmingham, where I achieved a first level BSc. At the beginning I like to get a feel for what level of knowledge students have, and together we set goals for what we wish to achieve (e.g. time remaining until the exam, what grade they wish to achieve, if there is any particular section they are struggling with, etc..). I tend to start my tutoring with warm-up questions relating to the previous session as a mini tester for memory.
