Abstract

The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.

The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.

Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.

Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

Personal Description:
Hi I'm Elise! A second year environmental science student at Lancaster University. I have a wide range of science knowledge and am excited to begin sharing and supporting GCSE aged pupils grow in their knowledge and interest of the sciences as well! Outside of tutoring, I spend lots of my time playing the flute, reading, and hiking! I'm looking forward to beginning this tutoring journey in a fun, creative and beneficial way .

Teaching Experience:
I have experience tutoring one to one close friends and family but I believe I am suited to further tutoring since I already have quite a lot of experience in supporting and facilitating young people in scouting since I am an experienced scout leader in the Winchester district. I also would say I have a recent and relevant understanding of the GCSE syllabus and examinations, especially in the sciences since I am currently taking a Bsc Environmental Science degree and my passion for science has only grown since I took my GCSE's.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring will be adapted specially to each student, depending on how they prefer to be taught but also recognizing weaknesses in the syllabus and working on those until overall confidence is build. I hope to teach in a creative, interactive way that will not only build confidence in the syllabus but also in exam technique and exam nerves too, especially for GSCE students. I am Thiru, a very dedicated and passionate tutor to get your child to their desired job as smoothly as possible. I have nearly 3 years of teaching experience in a very highly reputed Tuition Centre. I have taught A level and GCSE Science and Maths, and the students I have tutored for have all got Grades 8/9 and A/A* in their GCSE and A levels respectively. My tutoring technique is very unique, as I do not waste a lot of time, and will only give information of which is required to get the best possible grades.

I have tutored for the past 3 years in a very reputed tuition centre in Hounslow, and have taught nearly 100's of students whom all have got Grades A/A* with my help and also their hardwork. I have also taught a range of exam boards as well from OCR, Edexcel, AQA (being the most popular ones!! :) ), but have also taught the niche ones like Eduquas as well. So I know all the specification inside out. My teaching experience does not only limit to GCSE/A level, I have also taught at Summer Medical Schools at the University of Cambridge, so I can also provide rigour advice on how to apply for university as this can be a very challenging process.
