I tend to use a variety of methods when teaching, depending on the child and their needs, focusing on their age and what their syllabus requires. I am capable to do quick summarised revision sessions, as well as long term lesson plans. Either way I ensure that the student is always given homework and stays revising. If appropriate I also do small mastery tests at the start of each lesson which consists of a five minute recap test, so the student is required to have revised the previous lesson well. Obviously if they struggle with the homework or mastery test, then the lesson plan's pace is adjusted to meet the child's level. This helps to ensure that the student masters each topic before moving on to the next.

I was a student researcher in Church laboratory at Harvard Medical School. My research interest lies in synthetic biology and molecular biology. Currently, I am an undergraduate Biochemistry student at the University of Surrey.

When attending Sixth Form College of Farnborough, I tutored AS Chemistry students from 2013 to 2014. With biology and chemistry, I believe it is vital to understand basic concepts before learning anything in a higher level of detail. Due to this, I believe it is important for tutees to be taught the basics of a topic before learning detail.
If the tutee seems comfortable with a topic and would just like to consolidate, I would test them with some questions from either past papers or textbooks. This will ensure that, they are able to apply their knowledge.

Also, I believe memorizing key terms and definitions is very useful in exams so I use flashcards or small tests during the beginning or end of the tuition session to test their understanding and make sure that they learn these key words and definitions.

My new approach to teaching includes making online presentations containing key concepts and diagrams that will help my tutee learn about a topic with a new perspective.

Tutoring Approach:
During the last three decades I have worked with numerous students and have read research studies from academics around the world on the subject of attainment in mathematics. My own experience is in keeping with all the studies I have read about this topic. The overwhelming majority of students can do well in mathematics provided they have the confidence, the techniques and willingness to work hard. Even after only six to eight weeks of tuition, all the students I have tutored have improved by at least one grade or one level.

I tell all prospective pupils there is no magic bullet or shortcut. To achieve success in mathematics a few things are key: understanding the concept well; understanding when and how to apply it in different situations; lots of practice in applying it in different scenarios and short, regular revision sessions. So my only pre-conditions before I agree to work with any student are: a positive attitude; a commitment to put in the time and effort required to bring about the improvement in their grades; and at least one ninety minute session every week.

It is important to me that students should enjoy mathematics and look forward to their sessions with me. To ensure this I use a variety of different resources to explain concepts to students and am a firm believer in using physical and computer based study tools and aides to complement the standard oral and written tools used to teach mathematics. I also believe in linking the mathematics that we study to the real world to increase students' engagement with the topic and their understanding of its relevance. I am very patient and empathetic to my student's needs and once they develop in confidence I encourage all my students to challenge themselves regularly. I have gained most of my practical teaching experience from my time in the NHS, where I worked as an information specialist. Every learner is different, so I like to find an approach that works with each of my students. Having taught people who struggled with subjects at school I try to find easy examples to illustrate particular concepts. I also believe that humour is a key part of the learning environment, and that learning should be enjoyable as well as educational.

While I am happy to meet face to face, I find that online tutoring works equally well and has the advantage of being able to record sessions that can be used by the student when revising. The use of interactive whiteboards still provides a great learning experience, and whiteboards can also be saved for the student to use later.

I am a qualified and experienced teacher and tutor of Biology and Chemistry with over 30 years teaching experience.
I have a B.Sc. in Developmental Biology and Biochemistry from Aberdeen University and a PhD.D. in medical science from Glasgow University.
I very much enjoy helping students understand and enjoy learning the concepts in Biology and chemistry needed to succeed in passing GCSE and A-level courses.( also Higher and Nat 5 courses in Scotland).

Teaching Experience:
I taught for 18 years as Assistant Curriculum Leader in Science at Clydebank College in Glasgow. I also taught a second year and third year university course in Biology with the Open University from 1998 to.2003. Following retirement from full-time teaching, I worked part-time as a Lab Leader with the first year B.Sc.Biology students for 5 years.

Tutoring Approach:
I can make use of a variety of resources, including written course materials, videos and animations available online and use of a whiteboard to explain calculation methods, to help students understand and learn course work. I feel it is important to adapt my teaching approach to meet the needs of each individual student.
