Award-winning director Kezia Barnett is a filmmaker with over a decades experience. She creates short films and music videos and has been directing international commercials since 2004.

With a degree in Fine Arts, she has an appreciation of film, photography and fine art in a practical, theoretical aesthetic way as well as technical.

Kezia has won numerous awards in recent years. She was the only director from the region presented in the Saatchi and Saatchi Young Directors Showcase in 2005. At the inaugural advertising award show, The Kodak Gongs, held in Sydney in 2005, Kezia was given the Young Director of the Year award.

Her directorial successes have also been awarded at music video and short film festivals. Kezia won the award for Best Commercial Spot with Love Story at the L.A. Shorts Fest in 2006 - this Hollywood event is the largest short film festival in the world.

In her commercial work Kezia has produced work for, and in, various cities and territories including the UK, New York, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Kezia has worked alongside some of New Zealand's most prestigious bands, making videos, including Goodshirt and Pluto. At the Juice Music Video Awards, in 2006, Kezia's music video Hands for Sarah Brown won Video of the Year. In 2005 her Cement video, for Goodshirt, won the People's Choice award at the Below Ground Music Video Fest in Sydney and in 2004 Goodshirt's Buck it Up won Best Group Video at the Juice TV awards.

She has written and directed several short films including Sweet As Candy (2003), Paperdoll Girl (2000) and Cyber Kicks (1999). These have been shown in both local and international festivals. Sweet As Candy is distributed by BritShorts.

BACKGROUND

Whilst studying at Auckland University she gained straight A grades and was awarded several scholarships including the Senior Scholarship in Film and Television and Media Studies, the Elam Art Scholarship and the NZ Federation of University Women's Final Year First Degree Scholarship.

She gained top in New Zealand in Bursary Photography (last year of high school).

In 1998 she was live-in field director / camera operator for More Flatmates (a documentary / reality TV programme) where she lived in a flat and documented the lives of her flatmates for 5 months.

During her early directing years she also worked in the art department, designing short films and worked on drama, TV programs and commercials.

Art exhibitions include: Barnett Newman - Calendar Girl (1997), at the George Fraser Gallery and Light Bytes (2003 & 2008 - projected animations on a four-storey high billboard in High Street, Auckland), in collaboration with Lesley Kaiser.

Teaching Experience:
I have given various talks and lectures, including to students at Unitec and Auckland University of Technology. I have also taught a workshop-based Interdiciplinary course at Unitec and tutored photography students in their last year of school, who achieved good grades.

I approach tutoring in a friendly and informative way. I studied Fine Art at Canterbury College of Art in the 1980's. As an artist I work figuratively. Through drawing in either pencil, charcoal, ink or pen I take my work forward into 3D materials and use photography as a major influence to inform my structures. I love to work with natural forms and use printing processes including lino cut, drypoint and stencil.
I have lived and worked in Lewes for the past 25 years. We have a family home on the outskirts of the town where I also teach Privately - both individually and group classes.

I am a professional fine artist with many years experience of teaching in Colleges and Universities both in the UK and the USA. I am committed to teaching and this to some extent informs my work I have continued my practice as a fine artist throughout my teaching career and I have continued to exhibit both in Europe the USA and Dubai. I have a Master's in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art in London and I am a professional fine artist with 30 years' experience of teaching in the field of Art and Design. In 2014 I was an early adopter of teaching the visual arts remotely to a range of students from different countries and backgrounds. Over that period I taught over 1000 students and as Head of Foundation Studies, I supervised the instruction of many thousands more. I have been responsible for strategies, content, and delivery of that covered media from fine art drawing and painting, photography, concept design, animation, theatre design, graphic design, and illustration. My approach across these disparate and rich media is to enable students to understand the connections between theory and practice and of how to develop a creative process which is research and concept-led. I continue my practice as a painter in my studio in Crete while exhibiting most recently in galleries in Greece, Switzerland and Spain. I regularly visits European museums and galleries and I am familiar with Art and Design from a global perspective. My approach to tutoring is to work with the students regarding whatever project they may be working on. In some cases I write a project for them. I speak online face to face to each student once a week and encourage them to upload work in-between our meetings for advice and comment. It's not something for finished works. It's your space to experiment, to discover, but also to fail and make mistakes.

I have a MA in Production Design for Film and Television from Kingston University and a BA Hons in Furniture Design and Applied Arts from Edinburgh College of Art. I have worked in the film and television industry since 2004. I lead large teams of specialist designers, art directors, junior assistants, crafts people and construction teams. And I collaborate closely with other experts within the industry including cinematographers, directors and screenwriters.

A production designer designs the worlds in which the TV Drama or film is set. That includes working with location people to choose locations in which to film - and building sets in studios. It can also involve working closely with SFX teams. The role juggles creative vision with practical project management. It's a collaborative media/ industry and relies heavily on communication skills- visual and verbal.

Teaching Experience:
I've tutored students looking to win a place in art schools/universities and specialist creative high schools. Students looking to better their results at A level, and I've taught larger classes of young adults in university and workshops. I help my four year old with his art and design too : )
