To understand the working of a balance sheet [statement of financial position] most students memorise the order in which elements are applied. This is the cardinal sin.

To be a successful student you must understand why we need a balance sheet and what information users of this particular financial statement are looking for. When you look at it from a user perspective [understanding who those users are and what they want] your mind no longer tries to remember what was after what but your mind starts to actually determine what needs to be there to satisfy the users questions regarding a companies affairs.

I supported a young student who was studying for BA Business Accounting at the university by tutoring her in the Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, Financial Analysis and Corporate Finance subjects. As a result, she achieved a 2:1 Grade. It is pertinent to note that the young student did not have any prior knowledge in Accounting. She took A Level Drama, but changed to do Accounting at the university, which makes her achievement much more remarkable.

In my current role as an Accounts Lecturer, I have adopted a methodical approach to my teaching. The preparation and use of scheme of work, session planning, syllabuses, timetable, lesson notes and handouts helps me in presenting my lessons in an organised and logical manner, and ensuring that the syllabuses are fully covered.
