I believe that the key to success for most pupils is to develop their skills and self-confidence to enhance their ability to successfully complete their examination by developing study skills and examination techniques.

My first session with a tutee and their parents is to establish their needs and goals. Together we draw up a plan of the work which we will pursue. This plan will be reviewed regularly and a progress report compiled.

Each of the subsequent sessions comprises of:

lesson on a topic previously decided upon

My primary aim is to help my tutees overcome any difficulties which they are having with their work and to help them to achieve their goals both in the short-term and the long term. Hello, my name is Robert. Learning and teaching in some form has always been part of my life; my personal motto is "Never stop asking questions....". I am a dad of two lively children (10 & 7), a primary teacher and a private tutor. I have a can-do approach to life and am never happier than when I am busy with my work or with my family. I play classical guitar, always have at least one book on the go, and love to walk in the countryside whenever our busy lives permit.

I have 12 years' experience as a teacher, the first years spent gaining experience, the later years in positions of responsibility culminating in being appointed Head of Science responsible for delivering the whole of the curriculum to years 7 to 13. I taught Combined Science up to age 14, Physics and Chemistry to GCSE and Physics and Geology A' levels. In addition to my classroom experience I have a TEFL qualification which I put to good use while I was living and working in France for 12 years tutoring French people on a 1:1 basis. Tutoring Approach:
I believe the greatest benefit of 1:1 tutoring (or tutoring small groups), is that it is so much easier to tailor the learning to the student's needs, aiding understanding and building on that towards mastery of a subject. Progress is often swift because as has been so often stated, 1:1 tuition for an hour is probably the equivalent of several days in the classroom! My initial approach is to assess the student's needs in the first couple of sessions, using the information gleaned to build a program of study that is particular to that student. With regards to TEFL, having lived abroad for 12 years I appreciate just how difficult it can be as an adult to learn a foreign language, so I have great empathy with my adult learners and love helping them get to grips with our complex language.

I have been passionate about maths since early childhood. I spent a decade as a fully qualified maths teacher, teaching GCSE maths and A-level (including further maths) to pupils from a wide variety of abilities, backgrounds and cultures. I semi-retired five years ago and have since tutored a number of pupils for A-level and GCSE. I have a first class honours maths degree from Oxford University and teaching certificate in maths for secondary education.

Teaching Experience:
After 20 years spent working in industry, I trained as a secondary school teacher (teaching years 7 to 11), and then spent nearly ten years teaching maths in a post-16 school in the Greenwich Borough. There I taught A-level (both maths and further maths) and also GCSE maths for pupils resitting. The pupils I taught were of a wide range of abilities, backgrounds and cultures. A large number of my GCSE resit pupils were successful in raising their grades to a C (or now a 4). Pupils were keen to be in my class.

I semi-retired around five years ago and have done a fair amount of tutoring of A-level and GCSE maths pupils, from a fairly basic level up to A level further maths.

Tutoring Approach:
I do not have any available slots free at present. I try to keep this list up-to-date. I will probably be retiring in July 2026, so it may not be possible to continue past that date.

I believe in a very individualised approach, concentrating on identifying and improving the areas a pupil struggles with. My experience in school has helped me learn a variety of methods for teaching particular topics, and which ones are most likely to be successful. Practice outside of lessons is key to success in maths, and tutoring needs to be in addition to full attendance and participation in school lessons, homework and additional sessions schools offer, and is absolutely not a replacement for these activities.

Since the pandemic started in 2020, all of my teaching has been online (via Skype, although I am happy to use other products if necessary). This has worked surprisingly well.

As it is slightly more difficult to explain things when you are not face-to-face, and also do not have travel time and costs, I usually go a little over the hour (75-90 minutes) but charge the normal rate for a one hour lesson.

For the protection of my elderly mother-in-law, I will need to continue with all lessons online for the foreseeable future.

I am happy to tutor pupils as often or infrequently as desired, and do not charge for cancelled lessons (provided I am informed in sufficient time to avoid a wasted journey). Pupils are free to leave at any time if they feel they have achieved everything they set out to achieve, or that things are not working out.

Hi, I am Lynette, and I am originally from Singapore. I am a native English and Mandarin, Chinese speaker, and have lived in the UK since 2013. Currently, I am finishing up my PhD in neuroscience (in the final stages) where I work frequently with children with and without learning disabilities and/or neurodevelopment disorders. I enjoy teaching greatly, as it brings me a sense of joy and pride when I see my students, be it a curious child or a determined adult, improve and gain confidence in themselves.

On a formal level, I took Mandarin lessons from Primary school (7 years) to College (17 years) and have achieved As/Bs in my national examinations including A Level in Singapore.

I have been giving tuition since the age of 16 years. I have taught in both formal teaching settings (i.e. government primary school, tuition centre and psychology at university level) and also in private tuition settings (i.e., one-to-one lessons or small group lessons). Over the years, I have gained a variety of experience teaching toddlers from the age of 2 years to young adults preparing for the HSK International exams or A levels, and also older adults who were learning Mandarin as a hobby, or to learn some useful phrases to speak to their in-laws or per the requirements of their work. I have also taught in both face-face settings and online (especially during the Covid period) so I am happy to teach in whichever setting that is best for you. Over the years, I have had students with physical disability (i.e. blindness) and neurodevelopment disorders (I.e. Asperger syndrome) so I am comfortable and familiar with changing my teaching technique to suit each student.

Tutoring Approach:
My main approach to tutoring is the principle that there is not a one size fits all teaching method. Every child or adult learns differently, and therefore there is no one approach that will suit everyone. I believe in changing my style to the needs of each student; for example, some students might learn better with visual aid, then I would choose to incorporate more visual material in our lessons. Specifically for little ones, I do not believe in a sit down and learn approach, I have found success in incorporating games into our learning. All in all, I want my lessons to be fun, engaging and yet also productive!
