Hello. I am a fully qualified teacher with experience across the whole of the primary curriculum, including special needs and teaching for SATS tests . I continually update my teaching, mainly through the National Education Union online training sessions. I have had great results tutoring children extensively on a 1-2-1 basis for SATS and the 11+ entrance exam, plus have experience teaching adult literacy and English as a Foreign Language. I aim to motivate both children and adults who find reading and writing challenging, building both confidence and skills. Practical strategies and numeracy games are used to assist children to gain improved competence in mathematics. Assessment is used to inform my teaching in order to make efficient use of the tutoring time.
I enjoy running, Pilates, reading and volunteer for charity, including as a volunteer youth-worker with children and young people.

Tutoring Approach:
First of all I like to determine the level of my students' proficiency by having a simple conversation with them and also having them read a short article/written piece so as to create my lessons to suit their individual needs and their particular level of proficiency. Consequently my approach and material changes to suit each individual student.

I usually create lesson plans according to the students' needs and their level of proficiency. I use different text books as well as online materials and come up with effective lessons. I also use lots of flash cards as they are a very effective way to remember new things. News articles, simple song lyrics etc are also ways I use to make lessons fun but very easy to remember at the same time. I use these especially for conversational purposes to get my students to learn new vocabulary and expressions as well as be more confident speaking/reading English.

Hello! My name is Gemma and I am a 32 year old doctor, chartered accountant, strategy consultant and successful start up founder. I graduated in medicine from Nottingham University in 2016, switched to finance, became a qualified chartered accountant, and now work for one of the 'Big4' in health advisory and strategic consulting. However, my heart will always lie with the sciences, and somehow in amongst all of my wide ranging career, my favourite job has always been teaching.

I have been tutoring maths and science (chemistry, biology, physics) to GCSE level for several years, and more recently maths and biology to A level standard. I have experience with ages 6-18 (and a few adults as well!), as well as with children with autism and ADHD.

Informal, friendly and flexible approach (usually with tea and cake!). No question is a stupid question: I very much remember the feeling of sitting in the back of a classroom not understanding a thing, and I wish I had had someone to field my "stupid" questions! I am big believer that if pupils don't understand something, it's on me to keep trying, until we find a way to make it make sense. I have really enjoyed establishing great relationships with pupils in the past, many of whom I am still in contact with now, whether it's to call and ask me questions over the phone or simply to let me know how they're getting on. I've also provided pupils with references, interview practice (especially medical interviews) and personal statement help. I work with the pupil to whatever they need - I have been known to tutor until the small hours the night before a GCSE maths exam, review homework over whatsapp and answer phone calls after bedtime! My introduction to tutoring came through successfully helping my sons through their A-levels in Maths, Further Maths and Physics. The experience inspired me to look into tutoring as an alternative occupation, and, for the last couple of years, I have been pleased to take on other students. I now work part-time in software development but love teaching and find tutoring very rewarding. Generally, most of my students are working their way through their A-levels but I can also help out up to University level, either with preparation for entrance exams (e.g PAT, NSAA, STEP), or with some of the topics encountered in Maths / Physics / Engineering courses. I like to treat students as individuals with differing needs. For some the key is to develop a solid understanding - subject knowledge tends to build on itself, and those who miss basic points in class can often find themselves slipping behind, feeling lost and not able to cope. For others, it involves digging deeper into the subject to perhaps make connections that weren`t at first apparent.

At all levels, I have found that guided questioning and encouraging students to think through their own difficulties is very effective. As a psychology graduate (before studying maths at university level), I have a fascination with how students themselves will approach a maths problem, and I'm good at allowing them to explore and develop their own ideas.
