I am a native English speaker and have been studying languages for 20 years. I have travelled to many countries and experienced many cultures. I know speaking a language fluently is so important to enjoy new experiences. I have a Degree in Linguistics and have been trained in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL/TESOL). I have a variety of experiences in teaching, training and tutoring. Although I am originally from Australia I am now based in London. I have spent time learning Russian, Spanish and German, so I know how useful it is to have someone helping continuing to build vocabulary and correct language use. Tutoring Approach:
My initial focus will be to spend time finding out what you want to learn and how you enjoy learning the most. My focus will be what you identify as needing help with, as well as giving feedback on how your language skills are progressing. I am most happy providing conversational English practice so that you can improve your skills in interacting with others, either at work, or study or even just travelling with greater ease. I am happy to provide exercises and tasks for you to work on as well as English conversation.
I am happy to meet you wherever is convenient - perhaps a local cafe or library. I can also tutor in my home or yours if that is easier. I am happy to tutor via Skype following a first meeting if travel is an issue.

For students preparing for their GCSEs, we work hard on learning how to answer exam questions. Techniques and skills on how to ace the questions are taught which are key to getting more marks in their GCSEs.

I am married with a daughter at university and a son at college. I am interested in many different things, from sports to wildlife. I think I am friendly and fun, and because I have tried learning foreign languages myself, am sympathetic towards my students needs!

I have actually taught TEFL for about 10 years (and have been in the TEFL business for much longer, publishing books for TEFL). I have worked in Japan, Egypt and Spain and also taught at the IH Executive School in Piccadilly, London. I'm Chris, a 23 year old maths PhD student at Brunel University. I was originally granted a School Studentship to fund my studies but then soon after starting my research I was upgraded to an ESPRC grant. I study maths because I enjoy it, and enthusiasm to teach it comes part of this package. For A-level and higher I specialize in pure maths, so algebra, calculus etc so if you happen to be struggling with areas such as these then I'm your guy. Any level lower than A-level I will also be happy to help with.

I do not have a current CRB check but I'm sure I could get one if it is needed - I haven't commited any crimes trust me.

Whilst in 6th form and during my undergraduate years I often went back to my secondary school to help out in the maths department.

For the past academic year I have taught many seminars for foundation, 1st and 2nd year undergraduates. These have ranged from 2-100 students per seminar.

I am currently studying my French degree and needed some help for my 2nd year core language and oral exams in which I struggled very much. I did very badly (20%) in my core language and similarly in the oral exam. I had around 1-2 weeks of sessions with Nicolas and I could not have asked for more. We did a few past papers. And even though we did not know what was likely to come up in the exam, he was very good at helping me pinpoint the important information in a passage and how to respond to the questions. Similarly with the oral part, he kept me on my toes by always speaking to me in French at the beginning of the sessions and throughout which was very helpful and providing me with core info of which I needed to speak about in the oral. Nicolas worked with us in London three days per week, as a French tutor. (We moved to the U.S. when the employment ended.) Nicolas took full responsibility for our two boys for three days per week.

Tutoring Approach:
I use the Direct Method or Communicative Method. It depends obviously on your level. I still provide explanations in English.

Very often ,many people's only previous experience of learning a language has been at school ,where a great deal of emphasis was placed with the purpose of passing an examination .However, teaching approaches to modern language training have changed enormously in recent years ,and as a result ,learning a language is now a lot more fun and a far more rewarding experience!

Languages are now widely taught using a method known as the Communicative Approach or Direct Method, whereby the teacher conducts the session almost entirely in the target language regardless of the student's level. I reckon it is the best way to immerse yourself into a new culture.

Of course, depending on your level, I will still give explanations and instructions in English for those wishing to do so.

While it may take getting used to initially, the method has proven to be highly effective and is adopted by language training organisation around the world.
