My name's Louisa, I'm 36 years old, and I'm an experienced tutor of both adults and children. I play the flute, accordion and piano. I have had a classical music education, and in recent years I have also studied blues, jazz, rock, pop, folk and gypsy music.

I have been giving private lessons in music theory, flute, accordion and piano since 2002.

Music Theory: Many of my students are gigging musicians who have decided they want to learn how to read music and how to understand harmony. I also teach a lot of students who are studying at music colleges, universities, or in schools, who need extra help with understanding music theory in able to pass their exams. I studied medieval languages, literature, and history at the University of Cambridge before completing an MA in Medieval Studies at the University of York. I then moved to La Rochelle (France) in 2016, where I taught English in two schools. After spending 4 months in New Zealand, I began teaching English at the Sorbonne University in Paris (2018-2020). I am now in the process of completing a PhD which focuses on medieval literature and languages (including Old French). I take a keen interest in language, especially French, and enjoy sharing this with my students.

Teaching Experience:
From October 1st 2016 until April 30th 2017, I taught English to 11-18 year olds in two French high schools. I also privately taught English to a French businessman in preparation for his travels in Australia, and to a young student studying for his baccalaureate exams. I gained a TEFL qualification in 2015.

I am a friendly and unintimidating person, and encourage my students to ask questions on any linguistic point of difficulty. I am an A level student who is currently taking maths, biology and chemistry. I got a 9 in GCSE Edexcel mathematics and a A^ (9) in GCSE further mathematics AQA.

Teaching Experience:
This will be my first tutoring job, however, as I have only just completed GCSE, I believe that I am well equipped with the right knowledge to help students with their GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:
Our sessions will consist of pre recorded videos and video calls. During the lessons will explore each topic thoroughly with hand written notes and powerpoint presentation. I am an avid reader, and keen amateur actor.

I have worked in education since 2003, initially in the primary sector and since 2007 in secondary. My initial experience was as a Teaching Assistant, working with children with special educational needs, including one to one teaching of pupils with autism and Asperger's syndrome. My approach is open and relatively informal. I feel that tutoring works best when a relationship is established between myself and the student - they should feel free to ask questions, raise issues, and discuss any aspect of the work that interests them. It's very different to being taught in the classroom: in addition to individual attention, it also offers the opportunity to read and study texts not on the curriculum which can augment and strengthen the school syllabus. English is essentially a skills based subject. Although there is a lot of content to learn at both GCSE and A level, students benefit from being able to access and flexibly use the techniques needed to study and criticize. Reading, debating, and discussing a variety of texts enables the student to develop and apply these skills in lessons and exams.

Tuition is available in English Language and Literature for all secondary years, including GCSE resits. I can also tutor pupils preparing for the 11+, and scholarship entry in Year 7 or Year 9. Tutoring sessions are specifically geared to the student's individual needs, and may include functional literacy, close discussion of a set text, exam revision, and past papers. Teaching Art is my true passion which I've honed and strengthened for over 20yrs. I`m as dedicated now as ever in sharing Art skills with creative learners.

I founded my art company in 2017 in Reigate. Over a few years I grew our community of like minded Art tutors and students coming together to share our Art passion. Outgrowing our first studio, Covid lockdowns created an opportunity to move to a beautiful studio space. We developed and diversified our Art tuition offering.
