I have spent many years accumulating a wide range of academic qualifications, and my work has often primarily consisted of passing on my knowledge to others in a form they can understand. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people to understand something they thought was beyond them. By virtue of having studied several subjects at a high level, I empathise with the feeling of finding something difficult, and have the patience and technique to get past this. I am not a single-subject specialist who might find it difficult to understand why others struggle in their area of expertise.
For students who are preparing for exams, my knowledge of examination technique, and an empathy with the marker, should be invaluable. I always keep in mind the importance of the student's goals, but never take myself too seriously.

My whole career has been geared towards some form of teaching. Hello, I'm Ruben and I've just started my career as a science tutor. Having recently graduated from the university of Bristol (BSc in Biology with first class honours) I'm now tutoring KS4 and A-level Biology for both young and adult learners.

I have experience as a research intern for labs at the University of Bristol and the University of Newcastle, and I'm currently volunteering as a part-time researcher for the London-Based Social enterprise 'Mapping for change'. My primary goal is to listen and communicate well with each student, so that I can really understand their needs and cater for them; in turn, they get the most out of each lesson. I motivate students to want to learn and to do well. One thing I do differently from others is I explain how what they are learning is relevant to the real world. I try and strike a balance between motivating students, but not stressing them out too much.

Working through many examples from the syllabus is important and reinforces what the student has learned. I ensure this aspect of learning is both challenging and productive, ultimately getting the student closer towards their goal of achieving a high grade in their exams.

I am efficient with time management so that each student gets the most out of each lesson. I strongly encourage them to spend time outside of the session learning, including setting them homework, because this is where they will make their biggest strides forward.

After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a 1st Class BSc Hons in Economics, I worked as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant at professional services firm, PwC.

In search of a more fulfilling profession, I made the move into teaching through the Teach First programme in 2018 as a secondary mathematics teacher.
