Personal Description:
I have a dual background in Electrical Engineering and Psychology and retired in 2007 after 20 years as a University lecturer. At different stages in my career I have taught telecommunications engineering, computer programming, software engineering, artificial intelligence and psychology. For relaxation I listen to jazz and blues.
Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring students since March 2008 and am able to offer maths, physics and ICT from primary up to 'A' level, and general science (biology, chemistry, and physics) up to GCSE level. I have taught GCE A-level Maths, Further Maths and Physics with a number of students who have obtained places at Oxbridge/ Russell Group Universities to study Engineering, Maths, Medicine and Economics. A number of my tutees have been following courses in IGCSE Maths or Science or the IB in Maths or Physics. I have also taught students with Statements of Special Educational Need who have succeeded in obtaining qualifications in Functional Skills in Maths, English and Science. I am familiar with the 11+ exam requirements of Bromley, Bexley, and Kent education authorities and have assisted a number of pupils with their preparation for the exam. (In the absence of this category in the Subject list, my fee for 11+ preparation is 24/hour and for 13+ (Common Entrance) 26/hour.). At postgraduate level I can advise on research methods and statistics.
I am a chartered psychologist and can carry out educational and psychological assessments of both children and adults who are experiencing learning or language difficulties (however, I do not undertake remedial teaching).
Tutoring Approach:
PLEASE NOTE: FROM JANUARY 2019, I WILL NO LONGER BE OFFERING IN-PERSON LESSONS BUT CAN PROVIDE LESSONS VIA SKYPE OR (PREFERABLY) ZOOM ON EITHER WEEKDAYS OR WEEKENDS
I consider it important to assess the student's needs, strengths, and weaknesses carefully at the outset in order to develop a set of goals based on this assessment. I aim to provide well-structured and clearly presented instruction, which if the pupil is able and well-motivated will generally lead to progress. If the pupil is poorly motivated and/or has acquired unhelpful learning habits then we may need to vary the approach in order to re-engage their interest and/or find a level at which they can perform successfully, and then build on this accomplishment.
If required, I can provide references from past and present clients. I also offer a free first lesson so that the student has the opportunity to experience my style/approach before committing themselves to further lessons.

Personal Description:
I am a retired professor looking to contribute to the success of young children. I have achieved everything in my life in terms of status and professional achievements. I have a strong passion for Maths and would like to make the learning of Maths a great success and a pleasurable experience for young children.
Teaching Experience:
I have 45 years of full-time teaching experience of Maths and physics in schools, colleges and universities. However for the past 13 years, I have been preparing students exclusively for the linear and modular GCSE Maths for the Edexcel, AQA and O&C examination boards with resounding success. I have the pleasure of tutoring those children who are borderline cases struggling to achieve grade 5 (old grade C) in the GCSE Maths. I have also the pleasure of tutoring high achievers doing higher GCSE Maths looking for top grades 8-9 (old grade A*) for easy admission to top universities in the UK.
Tutoring Approach:
1. My prime objective is to make Maths interesting, easy and simple to understand by all my tutees in a relaxed learning environment.
2. I make use of simple practical techniques to illustrate mathematical concepts which may otherwise be difficult to comprehend.
3. I try my best to motivate and inspire my tutees to do good quality Maths at the GCSE standard which unfailingly translates into improved exam grades.
4. I apply common sense strategies which enhance the learning process and help children achieve their full potential. Needless to say, tutoring of Maths is my absolute passion and I will continue to make a lasting impact on the way Maths is taught and perceived by young children in schools and colleges.
5. I have multiple modern approaches to solve the same mathematical problem in many different ways using conventional and non- conventional methods of learning and my pupil are at liberty to chose the one that they appreciate the most.. If you are looking for a targeted- performance Super Maths Tutor for the GCSE, search no further.
6. Any assignment will be accepted on the PAY AS YOU GO direct debit basis.
7. I charge £120 for a single 2-hours session and £70 for a single 1-hour session.
8. For a pupil doing Foundation Maths, I recommend one 2-hour sessions per week per Term to get grade 5 ( old grade C) and for a high performing pupil doing Higher Maths, I recommend one 2-hour sessions per week per Term to ensure a grade 8-9 ( old grade A*).

I have cisco webex software, zoom and skype, and am also DBS cleared
I am a highly experienced, enthusiastic and very versatile optical engineering senior lecturer/researcher, who gained a PhD from the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, City University, London, UK in "Fibre optical temperature and strain sensors using fluorescent techniques" for measurement applications using the fluorescence generated from rare earth-doped optical fibres (e.g. Er3+, Yb3+, Tm3+ etc.). I also possess very good experience and knowledge of industry, with excellent complimentary skills gained from higher education - in particular industrial measurement, forensic analysis, quality control and statistical analysis. A BSc first degree in forensic science is combined with a further specialist MSc in engineering metrology and topped with a PhD in photonics - making for good, broad-based, multi-disciplined measurement science and analytical capabilities right across the scientific spectrum. I have a proven high degree of personal motivation, and am capable of working on my own initiative or equally as part of an effective team. In addition, I am able to communicate very well at all levels of hierarchy, with excellent skills developed in scientific report writing (journal papers, periodicals, book chapters etc.) and oral presentation (conferences, lecturing etc). I have over 50 publications to date in my field: 20 journal papers, 22 conference papers, 2 articles, 4 book chapters and other major works.
PhD thesis title:
"Fibre optic sensors based on fluorescence lifetime techniques for temperature and strain measurement"
Thesis submitted for examination for the degree of
Doctor of Philosophy
at
City University
School of Engineering
November 2002
Abstract
The author presents a thesis based upon the use of the fluorescent properties of rare earth doped materials. The thesis commences with a review of the current fibre sensor technology in the field, with special emphasis on those sensors designed for temperature and strain measurement. The use of the physical phenomena of fluorescence produced from rare earth doped optical fibre for temperature measurement is then introduced and explained in more detail, particularly with regard to utilisation of the fluorescence lifetime technique in such sensing, which is then compared to the other fluorescence-based methods for measuring temperature.
The recently discovered small strain sensitivity of the fluorescence lifetime is then introduced as a theoretical candidate for potential application to simultaneous temperature-strain sensing, using two different doped fibres in a single sensing element, and subsequently state-of-the-art temperature-strain discrimination techniques are then explored for the purposes of exploitation to dual measurement.
Results achieved from using the fluorescent lifetime approach for a range of rare earth materials are then presented, followed by further results obtained from combining the lifetime technique with Fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) for the first time. Also, the irreversible effects upon FBG performance after exposure to long-term high temperatures are explored.
Finally, there is a summary of the work presented in this thesis and the author's opinions on achievements made. Current trends in fluorescence lifetime-based sensing are discussed, both commercially and academically, together with projected work for the future.

Personal Description:
I am a 34 year old Post doctoral researcher in the field of endocrinology.
My undergraduate degree (2010) was in Biology from Imperial College, London, where I continued to study to Masters level (2011) in Reproductive and Developmental Biology. between 2013-2016 I completed my PhD in reproductive endocrinology. therefore my knowledge of biology spans multiple subject areas.
I have A-levels in Biology, Physics, Maths and History and a keen interest in all of these subjects.
Having completed my PhD and fulfilled 3 post-doctoral research positions, I feel I have gained experience in the skills required at all levels of education to progress and succeed and would really like to help others to realise their academic talents and to succeed in their education.
Teaching Experience:
I am currently training for my postgraduate certificate of academic practice, for lecturing and small group teaching at undergraduate level.
I have been tutoring privately for the past 6 years and have successfully guided GCSE and A-Level students to achieve their goals, gaining further jobs through recommendation.
Throughout my career, I have been responsible for overseeing and training undergraduate students in the laboratory and ensuring they have a key understanding of protocols, the biology behind them and how to use this knowledge to work out problems for themselves. This also involves mathematics skills, such as fractions, dilutions and molar concentrations, as well as helping them with any biology questions they may have outside of the lab. I provide feedback on presentation skills and on key learning skills required at degree level.
I have also had experience teaching students at A-level stage, in a two part workshop surrounding the biology of genetics. A key component of this is helping them to understand a totally new subject and to answer any questions they have surrounding university applications, study skills and personal statements.
I like to think this broad range of experience has taught me to interact with students of various ages and to recognise learning approaches that work best for different individuals.
Tutoring Approach:
The most important thing to consider is a student's personal requirements and to find a learning style that works for them. People learn in different ways so to teach in a style that maintains interest and works for the individual student is really important to me.
a goal based approach is important in my eyes. to understand what need to be learnt, by when and to work through a strategic plan to achieve the best results for the student.

Personal Description:
Hi! I'm a masters student at the University of Nottingham, with lots of experience tutoring both online and in person. I'm passionate about maths and physics and would love to help you out with your GCSE and A level revision.
I have experience with international exam boards such IEdexcel and CIE so would love to help you out with your IGCSEs and A levels over the summer .
I would also love to help out if you student who needs to catch up due to covid related missed learning or if you'd like to get get a head start on your A level content this summer!
Teaching Experience:
- Over 850 hour of online tutoring experience (mostly private but also in schools).
- 1 year of in person tutoring experience in a school.
- A summer job writing content (i.e., notes and questions) for an A level physics course.
I am familiar with all of the major UK exam boards (Edexcel, OCR and AQA) in all of the subjects that I teach as well as many international boards.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that the most efficient and rewarding way to learn is through understanding. Gaining deep understanding of the underlying physical and/or mathematical concepts, is key to tackling higher level questions. Understanding just one concept can make pages of your textbooks seem trivial. I will therefore try and identify and fix gaps in your knowledge and understanding. By doing this I aim to minimize that amount which you're required to memorize before an exam. I think that learning a subject by rigorous memorization is mind numbingly dull and is the best way to kill a passion.
Many people will not fulfil their potential due to fear of asking questions which they perceive as 'stupid'. I encourage you to ask me ridiculous and stupid questions.
A level exam boards have a tendency to ask very similar questions and even repeat exam questions from year to year. We will therefore spend lots of time looking at exam questions and the way in which they're marked to maximise the marks you can pick up.
I like to provide detailed feedback for my students by sending you a copy of your specification with the content we have covered highlighted red amber green after each session.

My goal is to be available when they need me most, providing targeted assistance that helps them reach their milestones effectively.
Outcome-Based Learning with Peer-Like Support:
My teaching approach is grounded in outcome-based learning, where the focus is not only on mastering the subject matter but also on achieving specific academic goals. I work closely with students to set clear objectives and create a structured plan that guides them toward success.
I believe that learning should be a collaborative journey, where the tutor and student work together as peers. By fostering a peer-learning environment, I encourage students to engage actively in the learning process, asking questions freely without hesitation. This method ensures that students feel comfortable and supported, making it easier for them to grasp complex concepts and develop the confidence to apply their knowledge.
Comprehensive Guidance and Autonomous Learning:
I aim to equip students not just with knowledge, but with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to tackle academic challenges independently. By guiding them through the learning process, I help them develop the ability to explore and discover solutions on their own, which is essential for long-term academic success.
My approach is designed to instill a deep understanding of the subject matter, ensuring that students are not just prepared for their exams, but also confident in their ability to excel in their future studies and professional endeavors.
Strategic Preparation for Exams and Assessments:
I understand the pressures that students face, especially as exams approach. Therefore, I provide strategic, last-minute preparation sessions tailored to help students maximize their performance. This includes focused review sessions, practice exams, and targeted feedback on areas that need improvement.
My methodical approach to exam preparation is designed to build the student's confidence and reduce anxiety, enabling them to enter the exam room fully prepared and assured of their abilities.
