Hello, I'm Zoe. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford, studying English Language and Literature at St Peter's College.

I'm an experienced tutor and I believe that with a good, solid education everyone's opportunities in life become better. I am patient and very committed to getting the best from my students.

Prior to university I attended Streatham and Clapham High School (8-16), and Wallington County Grammar School (16-18).

I completed A-Levels in English, Medieval History, French, Classical Civilisation and Philosophy AS Level.

My main interest is English Literature but I am ever-keen to use my French, and am also passionate about History, both ancient and modern. At GCSE level I opted to study primarily languages, namely French, German, Latin and Ancient Greek, and I am so grateful for the skills and linguistic understanding these diverse subjects have given me.

I am a keen reader, theatre-goer and traveller; I also enjoy sports, particularly running, netball and cycling. I live in southwest London and am happy to travel.

Teaching Experience:
I have plenty of experience tutoring people of all ages, and am currently specialising in English, French and History lessons and entrance/university interview preparation lessons.

I have worked as a temporary assistant at Faulkner House School in South Kensington during my Easter holiday from university in 2010 (children aged 3-11).

At school I worked on a mentor programme helping students from younger years with their French speaking practice and also with extra English.

I have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) qualification.

I worked with a local Brownie pack from 2006-8 which involved working with children aged 7-10, running a variety of crafts activities and games.

I am a firm believer in the ability of each person to achieve academic success through hard work, and also understand the need for patience and perseverance to succeed.

Having benefited from one-on-one tutoring during my own education for those subjects I struggled with at school, I have first hand experience of the importance of a good tutor and just how much difference one can make.

Personal Description:
I first started tutoring some of my fellow students in Elementary Logic during my second year at University and greatly enjoyed helping people improve their understanding of the subject and gain higher marks. Once my degree was completed I began tutoring A-Level students in Religious Studies and Philosophy in the Leeds area before moving to East Sussex.

The potential of tutoring can only be maximised if each student feels comfortable in lessons, so I actively try to cultivate a good working relationship with each student. After all, if I were not enthusiastic and passionate about the subject it would be impossible to motivate any students to be enthusiastic about it! So far all my students have improved their performance by at least by two grade boundaries following tuition with me.

Teaching Experience:
I have worked with students with a broad range of abilities, from those that need some extra help to reach their full potential, to those that aren't in mainstream schooling and as such don't have any previous knowledge of the subject. Some students are very visual in their learning, others are very shy and need a lot of encouragement to speak, and there are others who are extremely capable if you ask them the right questions. Using a range of resources I can tailor a programme of study to suit each student.

During my time tutoring I have noticed how easily students can lose confidence in their abilities, which at times can be a barrier in their learning. By encouraging students to ask questions, looking at what they are doing right and breaking down topics into their simplest formulation, I help the individual gain confidence in the subject and the skills to answer questions fully.3

Tutoring Approach:
My role as tutor is not only to help the student understand the concepts involved but also to gain the confidence to discuss those concepts in an analytical manner. Religious Studies and Philosophy are disciplines that greatly benefit from one-on-one tuition due to the complexity of the issues. In large lesson groups individuals can easily become confused and aren't always able to receive the instant feedback needed to further explore the subject matter.

As a tutor not only do I expand students' knowledge base but also engage students in a positive way with the subject. If students have been finding a subject difficult their enjoyment of learning can become affected and they can lose the motivation needed to gain a broader understanding. By showing enthusiasm for my subject and using relevant examples and discussion points I reintegrate fun back into learning about the subject.

I am a successful local tutor and teacher with an MA in Education from Oxford Brookes University (2016), a Postgraduate Diploma in English and Language in Education from the University of Reading (2012). I also have a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Secondary - English) from Oxford Brookes University (2007) and a BA Hons in English Literature (2006) as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Children's Literature (2024). I am passionate about my subject and enthusiastic about improving both my pedagogical and subject knowledge. With A Level clients, I often re-read the key exam texts and exam specifications in order to deliver a successful tutorial. For GCSE, I am confident with multiple exam boards but, again, I take a sincere interest in changes to qualifications and specifications. I have recently led a team of ten teachers in our delivery of the GCSE English qualification through WJEC. I use feedback from the tutee's parent (via a school report) and informal feedback from the tutee to create an Individual Tuition Plan which includes setting three clear targets. I am less interested in simple academic tutoring and more concerned with the relevance of the subject to the students actual life. I want to enrich the student's life by using the subject to better understand themselves and the world around them. As far as Film Studies are concerned, my interest lies in helping the student to see film as a user-manual for actual living. Therefore I see Italian 50s neo-realism as pertinent as the latest Mission Impossible movie. Ideally the student's exploration of the subject is an exploration of themselves.
With photography I teach that a photograph is a language whether is modern expressionalistic, surreal or journalistic. We have to try to understand what the photographer is in fact seeing. Don McCullin and Man Ray are both expressing not only a critique of the outside world but are providing a window into themselves, their deeper nature.
With drama I want the student to experience somehow what the actor is experiencing of what the director wants the audience to feel and/or learn. I'm particularly interesting in conveying the immediate appeal of Peter Brook and finding out, with the student, where Brook and all the other dramatic explorers, what they are saying to us and where they want to take us.
