Emily - Aldgate tutor
Information About Emily:
Personal Description:
I completed my A levels in 2004 and gained 4 A grades (English Literature, History, Spanish, General Studies and AS level in Mathematics with Mechanics) then went on to the University of Edinburgh where I recently graduated with a 2:1 in the joint degree English Literature and Spanish (I achieved a first in English Literature and a 2:1 in Spanish). The 4 year course at Edinburgh also allows you to study an extra course in the first two years and I chose to study European History.
English literature is my real passion and I am an avid writer, both of fiction and non fiction. I felt that doing a University degree solely in literature would not, however, provide me with a hugely practical degree so I chose to study Spanish too. I spent a year in Granada, in the south of Spain, as part of my degree and fell in love with the language, culture and people. After a stint travelling, I have just moved to London and would like to continue the tutoring work I began during my degree.
Teaching Experience:
- I tutored year 11 students for their spanish GCSEs during my second year of university.
- When I spent the the third year of my degree abroad in Spain I taught English to foreign students.
- I have spent long periods of time helping out in primary schools - my mum teaches 5-6 year olds and I am currently spending several days each term helping out with her class - hearing readers, helping with practical maths etc.
Whilst I'm aware that my experience is comparatively limited, I believe I make a good tutor as I am an excellent communicator, I'm enthusiastic, resourceful and able to motivate students. I'm also friendly and warm and take pride in supporting and encouraging students.
Tutoring Approach:
My main experience is within language teaching and I approach this in a similar way to the way in which I was taught Spanish and French. I tend to focus on the separate areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening (where possible) and grammar but try and make my lessons varied and interesting, using multiple resources ie foreign language newspapers, literature in the target language, watching news bulletins, using the internet etc. I think it is essential to maintain this mix to keep a student interested. I also think that (informal) testing is important as it focuses the student's attention but in general my approach is quite relaxed so my students feel at ease.
