Personal Description:
I am a very passionate lecturer, who specialises in teaching IT and Computing at various academic levels to all ages. I have been teaching since the age of 18 initially starting my experience as a part-time tutor to adult IT courses, including ECDL, CLAIT, IBT II, whilst pursuing a BSc Honours in Computing Science at the time. I successfully graduated with second class honours degree, and became a full-time Lecturer in IT at Barking College. My experience develop further to include teaching BTEC National Diploma, BTEC GNVQ Intermediate, BTEC Higher National Diploma, A-levels. In 2005, I joined Havering College as a Curriculum Manager in IT, responsible for the management, curriculum, delivery and quality of AS/A levels in IT, and Higher Education provision. My duties still include teaching a substantial amount of hours across various curriculum areas. I am a very successful manager with success and achievement rates into the high 90 percent, especially with A-levels and Foundation Degree programmes. I am presently studying an MBA in Management having completed a CMI Level 7 Executive Diploma in Management. I enjoy teaching!
Teaching Experience:
I have been teaching a wide variety of IT and Computing-related subjects at various levels, including GCSE, Entry-Level/Foundation, BTEC First Certificate/Diplomas, BTEC National Certificate/Diploma, AS and A-levels, Access to HE, BTEC Higher National Certificate/Diploma, and Foundation Degree for at least 11 years at both Barking College and Havering College. I am presently a Curriculum Manager in IT at Havering College, responsible for the management, curriculum, delivery and quality of A-levels in ICT, Access to HE and Foundation Degree in Computing and Systems Development. I also teach a substantial amount of hours in specialised IT areas across all provisions, including web-site design, development and management, hardware and software, Cisco CCNA networking, e-commerce, digital economy, office applications, programming (C, C++, Java, COBOL, Visual Basic, Pascal), client/server-side programming including PHP, ASP, JavaScript with web-enabled database connectivity, databases, spreadsheets, and many other specialism areas. My substantial teaching experience is fully supported with professional teaching qualifications, including Post Graduate Certificate in Education in Post Compulsory Education and Training, as well as Further Education Teachers Certificate. I am also a current member of the Institute for Learning.
Tutoring Approach:
My initial approach is to learn as much as I can about the learner and their primary learning needs, identify differentiation, and create a suitable learning plan that will meet the aims and objectives of the learner. As a personal tutor to my own groups, their needs come first and I am continously reviewing indiviual personal learning plans to ensure that my learners are acheiving. I have been teaching to various age groups for many years, and I can easily adapt my teaching and learning strategies to all. I provide continuous support and guidance. I easily gain the respect of my learners, by demonstrating the respect in the first instance.
