Personal Description:

I am taking a different and slightly less conventional approach to tutoring. I have come to the conclusion that for some students and tutees the traditional approach of undertaking some extra written work and some one-to-one conversational activities in an indoor setting can be a bit limiting and uninspiring (I have developed an interest in those students and learners who for whatever reason just don't respond to traditional teaching and learning methods - having been such a student myself in many ways!)

It can also result in students undertaking more hours of tuition than they actually need - often all they need is just a bit of guidance or to have their confidence built up slightly and then they are able to get on with their studies on their own. My idea is to venture out and use the outside world as a learning resource. I have been involved with and volunteering for organisations and charities (such as the RSPB and various educational charities) for the past year or so, and I believe that engaging in learning in a new, and preferably outdoor, environment is the best option for some students for whom more traditional learning and teaching methods are not working.

My idea to use outdoor and external settings and resources can apply to pretty much all the subjects that I am able to teach. For example History students may benefit from a trip to a historic or archaeological site or to the local archives. Citizenship students may find it useful to visit a town hall or attend court or a local council meeting. Obviously my plan for any student would be entirely based on what they are hoping to work on. I would also create a list of learning resources for each student to study in their own time (it could be anything from a relevant episode of BBC's 'Coast' to a selection of election pamphlets. Again that would depend entirely on the student) This would also keep costs down for the student which I believe is very important. I believe that if I am good enough at what I do then I will attract enough clients without having to hold on to existing ones for as long as possible!

The idea is as much about raising confidence and genuine interest in a subject and learning in general as it is about results and exam success (which will often come naturally anyway as a person becomes more confident in their abilities!) I would say that if you are a student or parent who has concerns about specific learning disablilities (not sure if thats the PC way of describing it now - its always changing!) such as dyslexia or dyspraxia then you should contact someone who has specific knowledge and experience in those fields. But I might still be able to help such a student to get their enthusiasm for learning back as they deal with their other issues.
